    the social phenomenon as well as the group of men that are labelled malandros Malandro is in this context best translated as a violent gangster The field study is set in one of the barrios slums in more This is a thesis about the myth the social phenomenon as well as the group of men that are labelled malandros Malandro is in this context best translated as a violent gangster The field study is set in one of the barrios slums in north east Caracas Venezuela My target group are young men who live in a strongly male dominated environment highly affected by poverty under conditions which do not offer many possibilities for change Violence is a considerable part of their everyday lives and all of them have at one point or another seen people often family or friends get killed in the streets in front of their eyes The highly risky way of life of the malandro is called the malandreo One of the consequences of this constant exposure to violence is the widespread apathy hindering motivation for a seemingly unapproachable change This is an analysis of their subjective social reality and the cultural references that guide the malandros
