the Mycenaean world have often been understood in terms of indirect exchange via middlemen on Cyprus and in the Levant This view is mainly informed by the relative paucity of Mycenaean pottery found in Egypt especially when compared to the large amounts of Mycenaean pottery found on Cyprus and the Levant It will be argued in this article that connections between Egypt and Mycenae were of direct diplomatic nature and that various different missions can be identified over the course of the 15th to 13th centuries BC Moreoever it is argued that as a result of these connections Mycenaeans may well have settled in the land of the Nile serving the Pharaoh in different capacities To that purpose the article presents a range of archaeological iconographical and textual evidence coming both from Egypt and the Mycenaean world More Info Published in the Annual of Ex Oriente Lux JEOL 2010 Research Interests History Archaeology Near Eastern Archaeology Aegean Archaeology Classics and 5 more capacity of Ahhiyawa as evidenced in Hittite texts exceeds everything that is attested in the Linear B texts Therefore Ahhiyawa must have been larger than any of the known Mycenaean states With no room left in the Aegean to accommodate the large territorial state of Ahhiyawa I hope to demonstrate that Ahhiyawa should be seen as a conglomerate of some or all of the known palatial states Thus the Ahhiyawan capacity to field a substantial number of chariots will lead to an estimate of Ahhiyawan territorial size and eventually a hint as to where it should be situated More Info Published in Dacia the assessment of the usually very fragmented archaeological surface record Different strategies on probability modeling that have been developed to reconstruct spread and density of artifacts now and in Antiquity wherein collected batches of archaeological material are quantitatively corrected for biases and subsequently presented as indicative maps of human occupational strategies are still not uncontested It is my contention that apart from such positivistic application spatial analyses and statistics can be used to reveal much more intriguing aspects of collected archaeological datasets For example in one of my case studies I have been able to establish a relationship between highly variable thin scatters of archaeological artifacts and the presence of archaeological sites in the subsoils Such an approach focused at increasing the potential of our actual dataset may provide a fresh alternative to probability modeling Therefore I aim to produce a series of analyses which will to be able to reveal more valuable information within our datasets on regional economy demography and settlement patterns edit Advisors edit Edit Done Editing Papers J Waagen 2011 La necropoli arcaica de L Amastuola In G J Burgers J P Crielaard Eds Greci e indigeni a L Amastuola pp 105 115 Mottola Stampasud more by Jitte Waagen Share Facebook Twitter Edit Delete Move section J Waagen 2010 Le sepoltore di Muro Tenente 1993 2002 In G J Burgers Ed L insediamento Messapico di Muro Tenente Scavi e Ricerche 1998 2009 pp 85 141 Mesagne Locopresss more by Jitte Waagen Share Facebook Twitter Edit Delete Move section J Waagen 2010 Le sepolture di Muro Tenente alcune rifflesioni ed interpretazioni In G J Burgers Ed L insediamento Messapico di Muro Tenente Scavi e Ricerche 1998 2009 pp 141 147 Mesagne Locopress more by Jitte Waagen Share Facebook Twitter Edit Delete Move section G J Burgers J
