    resource use conflicts and to guarantee user rights to traditional populations However the process of implementation more Marine Extractive Reserves MERs are an increasingly popular tool for governments to mitigate climate change solve resource use conflicts and to guarantee user rights to traditional populations However the process of implementation of MERs along the Brazilian coast has been mainly top down while that of the Amazonian forest extractive reserves in the 80s was bottom up The geographic and demographic context of the areas also poses major obstacles to an effective co management system given the densely populated and urbanized conditions of coastal areas Among the most vulnerable groups are the young generation who have limited education and job opportunities to live around protected areas This study focused on the economic and political opportunities the MER Mãe Grande de Curuçá Pará provides for its population with a specific focus on a bottom up ecotourism initiative developed by a local youth group Participant observation and semi structured interviews with participants of the ecotourism initiative and government and NGO staff were carried out during a four month fieldwork in 2010 More Info Poster co presented with Dr F de Castro CEDLA Amsterdam Conference End
