    Email Residence Life Campuses Lorman Natchez Vicksburg News Events Calendars Marketing and Communication Publications Our website uses JavaScript to achieve certain sophisticated features visual cues and styles Please ensure that JavaScript is enabled when visiting our website for best results Help enabling JavaScript Skip to Page Content Announcements Home Announcements Item STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Cortni Cooper STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Cortni Cooper Vicksburg Mississippi She s had some highs and even some lows but Cortni Cooper isn t letting anything stop her march into greatness The charismatic bubbly junior your Miss Alcorn State University elect has battled through and recovered from a torn ACL and menisci not once but twice Not the type to let something like this keep her down Cortni plans to use her experience to help others as a physical therapist Why Alcorn I wanted to experience an HBCU Alcorn had such a family oriented environment I fell in love with the campus during my visit as a freshman in high school What made you decide to major in your field I chose biology pre physical therapy because I love people and I love to encourage others Twice I had to receive physical therapy for a torn ACL and menisci My experiences will help me empathize with my patients I will literally know the pain they are going through both physically and mentally What are you involved in at Alcorn outside of Alcorn On campus I play for the Lady Braves Basketball team I am a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity Golden Key International Honour Society Mortar Board and Chosen Generation Ministry I am also the 2014 2015 Miss Alcorn State University elect Outside of Alcorn I am a member of the House of Peace Church in Vicksburg Mississippi Every year I volunteer at the Salvation Army in my hometown What has been your best memory at Alcorn My best memories at Alcorn would have to be my experiences on the Lady Braves Basketball team I have learned so much mentally emotionally especially physically transitioning from high school to college level sports how to love in spite of how to endure no matter the circumstances and how to fight for what I believe in Who s the best faculty you ve ever had and why The best faculty I have ever had is my microbiology instructor Darryl Grennell He is very knowledgeable about the subject he teaches he really has a passion for what he does and he is here to help students He never dismisses any student who reaches out to him for help Not only that but his teaching style is amazing Who inspires you and why The women in my family inspire me because most of them are single mothers who have succeeded despite of their circumstances Seeing what they ve accomplished even in the midst of hardships has motivated me to fight through the adversities that come my way Not only that but the wisdom they share has helped me to become who I am

    Services Blackboard LMS Student Email Residence Life Campuses Lorman Natchez Vicksburg News Events Calendars Marketing and Communication Publications Our website uses JavaScript to achieve certain sophisticated features visual cues and styles Please ensure that JavaScript is enabled when visiting our website for best results Help enabling JavaScript Skip to Page Content Announcements Home Announcements Item Ms Ruby and the HBCU Egalitarian Tradition The news hit like a proverbial punch to the gut Is it true that Ms Ruby passed away I distinctly remember the raw emotions that I experienced when this text message from a popular football player on campus came through my phone Honestly I hadn t heard anything and as I sat in the office of a colleague who was close friends with Ms Ruby and relayed the question her shocked response indicated that she had no knowledge of the situation either Jumping onto various social media outlets I quickly discovered that the students had definitely become more aware of this information far before any institutional representatives and indeed they were sharing the news with profound sadness For years Ms Ruby stood at the front counter at the cafeteria making sure that no one would enter without swiping the Alcorn ID card or paying for the meal She guarded that station like the most dedicated soldier would protect the military base accepting no excuses and cutting no slack for anyone Whether you were a student or an administrator it was pay up or stay out I would frequently joke with Ms Ruby how she should let me in for a free meal She d give me a little smirk and then go right ahead taking my money before quickly reaching out to grab the next person s card To be clear she was not mean about it just matter of fact serious Ms Ruby took pride in doing her job Shortly thereafter on the famous Chicken Wednesday when everyone shows up for lunch and most students wear their sharpest outfits the Gospel Choir started setting up in the café In a move perhaps never seen before one student from the choir bellowed out and requested for the entire room to pay attention Quickly the packed room focused on him and he proceeded to ask everyone to remember Ms Ruby with a moment of silence Following the show of respect the Gospel Choir launched into a mini concert to honor her The room reverberated with the energetic sounds of praise and celebration of life That night about 100 people gathered on the historic Oakland Memorial Chapel steps for a candlelight vigil Toward the close of the program that featured passionate words of love for Ms Ruby from students and co workers I watched a particularly stoic young man become overwhelmed with emotions Clearly Ms Ruby had shown that she loved Alcorn and our students I only hoped that Ms Ruby fully knew how much she was appreciated in return Since her passing I started thinking about why it seems
