    a Glance Calendar From the President Biography IHL Board of Trustees President s Cabinet Staff Inaugural Photos Organizational Chart History President s Cabinet Mission and Vision Past Presidents Work for Alcorn Clubs and Organizations Home Discover Alcorn History History The History of Alcorn State University Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land grant institution in the United States and the second oldest state supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi James L Alcorn Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County seven miles west of Lorman 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson 45 miles south of Vicksburg and 40 miles north of Natchez The site was originally occupied by Oakland College a school established by Presbyterians in 1828 the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for 40 000 and named it Alcorn University Hiram R Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University s first president The state legislature provided 50 000 cash annually for the University s first 10 years to support its establishment and overall operation Additionally 30 acres of land were sold for 188 928 Alcorn received three fifths of the proceeds or 113 400 This funding was used for Alcorn s agricultural and mechanical components Initially the institution s three major study components were the four year college track the two year college track and the three year graded track Students spent the morning from seven o clock until noon in classes In the afternoon they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour Room and board including laundry cost about 5 a month In 1878 Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College The college was exclusively for males at first but eventually women were admitted A dormitory for women was built in 1902 Over time facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1 700 acres In 1974 Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University Governor William L Waller signed House Bill 298 granting this status Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource allocations from the state By the early 1990s Alcorn s physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified University The student population is now representative of more than 65 counties more than 30 states and at least 18 foreign countries The University provides an undergraduate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools engage in teaching and enter other professions As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens Alcorn has gained status and importance From the original eight faculty members in 1871 the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and

    the Admissions Office for an application and instructions for applying All applicants should have high school and or college transcripts ACT or SAT scores or a GED passing score transcript sent directly to the Office of Admissions Alcorn State University Lorman Mississippi 39096 7500 When the application for admission ACT or SAT profile transcript and or GED transcript is received the applicant will be notified concerning his her status It is advantageous to submit a partial transcript as this will enable the staff to evaluate the academic record and provide an early response to the applicant s request for admission Partial transcripts should include all available grades earned from freshman year to present The partial transcript does not substitute for the final transcript which should be submitted after graduating from high school ADMISSION OF FORMER STUDENTS Former students in good standing who have not enrolled for one or more semesters summer session excluded must file the brief application for readmission that is available in the Admissions Office or online A former student must be in good standing before being readmitted Alcorn State University adheres to the principle of equal opportunity The university does not discriminateon the grounds of race color religion sex national origin age or handicap Undergraduate Requirements There are five ways to gain Freshman Undergraduate admission to Alcorn State University Complete the College Prep Curriculum as listed below with a minimum 3 2 GPA Complete the College Prep Curriculum with a minimum 2 5 GPA and score at least 16 or higher on the ACT at least 790 verbal math on the SAT or rank in the upper 50 of your class and score at least 16 or higher on the ACT at least a 790 verbal math on the SAT Complete the College Prep Curriculum with a minimum 2 0 GPA and score 18 or higher on the ACT at least 870 verbal math on the SAT Students who meet full qualifier certification requirements for the National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA Summer Developmental Program Students 21 Years of Age or Over A student 21 years of age or over who does not meet or satisfy admission requirements set forth in paragraph B or C above may apply for admission as a nondegree seeking student Admission may be granted for such programs or courses as he or she may be prepared to enter Degree seeking student status may be achieved by meeting admission standards as set forth in paragraph B or C above or by completing a minimum of twelve 12 credit hours with a C average or higher Persons who are not high school graduates are required to pass the General Education Development GED test Applicants Under Age 21 Without A High School Diploma Applicants under age 21 who have not graduated from a regionally accredited high school must submit qualifying scores on the General Education Development Test GED or be home schooled Submission of scores on the ACT or SAT is strongly encouraged Home schooled students
