  • College Earns High Marks in National Academic Assessment : Saint Anselm College
    Earns High Marks in National Academic Assessment February 07 2014 Communications and Marketing 603 641 7240 Saint Anselm College earned high marks in a national assessment of students learning outcomes The results of the recent Collegiate Learning Assessment CLA placed the college in the 94th percentile of colleges and universities for significant academic growth The CLA a major initiative of the Council for Aid to Education measured skills such as critical thinking problem solving and written communication Students completed performance tasks and analytical writing tasks to demonstrate their skills The study conducted from 2009 to 2013 included a cross sectional study in 2009 2010 of freshmen and seniors and longitudinal analysis of 2009 freshmen who were tested again their senior year in 2013 Saint Anselm took part in the assessment to test its learning outcomes The positive results demonstrate the strength of Saint Anselm College s liberal arts education in growing highly valued skills that employers are seeking in graduates In a recent study of Saint Anselm College s class of 2013 within six months of graduation 98 percent of the class was employed in graduate school or engaged in service Learn more about this study and where our alumni

  • Nursing Professor Mixes Digital Learning with Parkinson’s Fellowship : Saint Anselm College
    Professor Caryn Sheehan DNP RN have a special understanding of the issues facing people with Parkinson s disease Sheehan s expertise in the disease was funded by a fellowship through the Edmond J Safra Philanthropic Foundation The organization offers a visiting nurse faculty program that educates nursing professors on various aspects of the neurodegenerative disease that affects nearly one million Americans Besides incorporating the fellowship experience in her classes Sheehan has shared her enhanced knowledge with health professionals The Safra Foundation recently invited her to make a presentation about her work at Boston Medical Center where she spoke to a team including occupational therapists dietitians physical therapists physicians and nurses Sheehan s area of expertise is medical surgical oncology and hospice care but she has cared for many patients with Parkinson s over the years People with this chronic disease have concurrent illnesses and needs that cross into all areas of nursing she says which makes it a challenge for teaching Through the fellowship Sheehan attended classes and worked in the movement disorder clinic at Boston Medical Center I was really struck by the variety of issues and disease severity in this population she says Each patient was so different from every other patient with this disease that I wondered how I could bring that point to life in class for my nursing students She created case studies based on the patient issues she observed in the clinic and linked them to video footage of Parkinson s patients available online Her students work in groups virtually meeting their Parkinson s patients By the end of the class my students have met several people with different stages of Parkinson s and addressed issues including movement nutrition and medication management Sheehan says The professor s work will inform her teaching and the

  • Mike Sheehan '82 Named CEO of The Boston Globe : Saint Anselm College
    the new CEO of The Boston Globe Sheehan began working for Hill Holliday in 1994 and became CEO in 2003 Last May he stepped down to serve as chairman for the company but according to the Globe he has relinquished that role to focus on the newspaper Boston Red Sox principal owner John Henry who is also the new owner of The Boston Globe chose Sheehan for the top post while also naming himself publisher With a long list of accomplishments throughout his career in advertising Sheehan is proud to say that his liberal arts education at Saint Anselm helped lead to his success Saint Anselm stands out from other institutions in its insistence that students learn to think critically said Sheehan Sheehan has remained close to Saint Anselm College since his time here on the Hilltop as a student He served on the Board of Trustees for 10 years beginning in 1998 the final four years of which he served as chair Sheehan also served as tri chair for the college s last capital campaign In July of 2003 Sheehan and his wife Maureen established a 500 000 fund to support the college s Portraits of Human Greatness humanities

  • Multifaith Prayer Room Opens in Cushing Center : Saint Anselm College
    opening of the college s first ever multifaith prayer room today on the lower level of the Cushing Center giving students and the Saint Anselm community of all faiths a quiet private space for prayer Fr Anselm Smedile O S B the assistant director of Campus Ministry offered the invocation with a prayer based on the writings of Pope Benedict XVI O God of peace and understanding hear the prayers of your people and look upon this space a place of quiet and stillness in the midst of the daily life and activity of Saint Anselm College Fr Anselm said and set it apart so that all who enter may worship you according to their conscience Campus Ministry Director Susan Gabert said the prayer room is not meant to alter the identify of the college as a Catholic institution Rather it was built in the welcoming spirit of the Benedictine tradition that the college was founded on This space serves to welcome a multitude of religious voices said Gabert because as we grow as a college and as a community it is important to understand the religious traditions of everyone with whom we interact The idea for the space arose through a combination of a recent survey that identified the need for prayer space for students of non Catholic faiths as well as ongoing discussions with students and colleagues from schools in the region Minimally decorated with religious mosaics wall sconces a shelf for various religious texts and a washbasin with running water for cleansing of the feet the room s seeming lack of design was intentional Gabert says the minimalist approach makes the space more accommodating for people of all faiths She also hopes the room will develop into something more substantial in the future While anyone in the

  • Young Alumni Named to "40 Under Forty" List : Saint Anselm College
    daily newspaper recognizes 40 young citizens for their service and talent to the state Criminal justice major John Stewart owns Bedford Martial Arts Academy and has received many commendations for his service to the community He founded a charity based martial arts program Karate to Institute Confidence in Kids and Individuals Needing Guidance KICKING that serves non profit programs dedicated to helping children His academy hosts charity events and fundraisers Stewart also volunteers at Saint Anselm offering a self defense class every year at new student orientation Before making the martial arts academy his full time job Stewart was a New Hampshire police officer for six years with the Bureau of Marine Patrol Department of Safety and the Department of Diplomatic Security Michael Skelton a politics major is the spokesperson for Public Service of New Hampshire He is involved in many volunteer activities and focuses on urging young people to attend college in New Hampshire or return to the state after college to raise their families He recently stepped down from the board of the Manchester Young Professionals Network after seven years and is co chair of the Stay Work Play organization a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the state as

    symbolizes a significant step for sophomore nursing students as they begin to apply their classroom studies to direct applications in the field Presided over by Fr Anselm Smedile O S B the assistant director of Campus Ministry the ceremony drew over 200 friends family members facult and alumni Always remember that you come from a Benedictine nursing program he said to the students For Saint Benedict wrote in his Holy Rule that the care of the sick in the community is an absolute priority which must come before all else so that there may be no doubt that it is Christ who is truly served in them Dean of the Nursing department Sharon George explained that nursing is a hands on profession and that the nurses hand or touch conveys a message of warmth caring and understanding This ceremony should be a reminder that God has entrusted you with the care of your patients by putting their lives in your hands said George Go forward into your clinical settings knowing that the Holy Spirit is with you and works through you to heal support and comfort your patients and their families This ceremony helps to reframe the students said Susan

    Round 1 on Friday evening Rounds 2 and 3 on Saturday Round 4 concludes the weekend on Sunday which will then be followed by an Awards Banquet in Davison Hall Being chosen three years in arrow as a host is a testament to the welcoming environment we have here at Saint Anselm said Jean Couture director of student activities at Saint Anselm and co host along with Fr Mathias Durette O S B for the tournament It also speaks volumes to our Benedictine tradition The Saint Anselm mock trial team was founded four years ago by alumnae Alyssa Hatem 12 and Alexandra Puglisi 11 It has grown exponentially in that time celebrating significant victories and earning respect from the mock trial community This year the college will field a team of 10 students who will compete against 23 other teams from schools such as Dartmouth Boston Colllege Tufts Brown Bowdoin and others Students will fill the roles of attorneys and witnesses A total of 71 judges will also be involved many of them Saint Anselm alumni Mock Trial allows our students the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills under pressure and in front of real attorneys and judges said
