  • Abbey Players Present “Almost, Maine” at Dana Center : Saint Anselm College
    Maine on November 7 9 at 7 30 pm in the Dana Center Join the Abbey Players as they present this poignant romantic comedy which chronicles hearts breaking and healing John Cariani s contemporary play tells the story of what happens on a cold clear moonless and slightly surreal Friday night in the middle of winter all is not quite what it seems in the remote mythical town of Almost Maine As the northern lights hover in the star filled sky Almost s residents find themselves in a contemporary midwinter night s dream Love is lost found and confounded Knees are bruised Hearts are broken And life for the people of Almost Maine will never be the same There are 10 Saint Anselm student actors portraying 20 roles in the show Additional students include three student stage managers and a tech crew of 15 Almost Maine is directed by Saint Anselm alumnus Matthew Cahoon 99 Actor and Playwright Cariani wrote his first play Almost Maine when he ran out of audition material Almost Maine premiered at Portland Stage Company in 2004 opened Off Broadway in 2006 and is featured in Smith and Kraus New Playwrights Best Plays of 2006 Tickets

  • Outstanding Alumni Receive Awards : Saint Anselm College
    the awards and are chosen by the Alumni Council Executive Committee Kevin Fitzgerald 00 President of the Alumni Association and Dr Steven DiSalvo president of the college presented the awards as well as recognizing their success and accomplishments to the audience which included family friends and fellow alumni The Alumni Committee awarded Michael Jaillet 91 pictured right the Humanitarian Award for his dedication with MJ s Army an organization he created after he was diagnosed with ALS also known as Lou Gehrig s disease To date MJ s Army has raised over 100 000 towards the ALS Association and its Texas Chapter as well as the ALS Therapy Development Institute Michael s constant care to help those dealing with ALS proves his kindness and generosity in helping others Captain Ann Darby Reynolds 61 was awarded the Alumni Award of Merit for her courageous actions in serving as a nurse in Vietnam and being one of four Navy nurses to receive a Purple Heart She served in the U S Navy for 26 years Mary Jo Majors 69 who is a member of the Alumni Council was recruited by Reynolds and attended the dinner to show her support Professor Paul Finn 73 was awarded the Walter J Gallo 58 Award for his commitment and dedication to the college Professor Finn made it clear how honored he was to receive this award after recalling the previous recipients Dr Thomas Van Hoof 88 was awarded the Health Service Award Receiving a master s degree in education from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and earning his doctorate in educational administration from Columbia University Dr Van Hoof showed his passion for learning and teaching Specializing in psychiatry Dr Van Hoof is currently an associate professor at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing

    note as the entire college community joined by alumni trustees and friends took part in the installation of the college s 10th president Dr Steven R DiSalvo See and read inauguration coverage Saturday morning began with the second annual Bob Collins 5k run walk around campus where siblings Anthony 08 and Tessa 12 Vercollone took top prize as first male and female runners On a more somber note many members of the class of 2012 as well as other alumni and students faculty and staff took a moment on Saturday afternoon to remember and pray for Daniel Breen 12 who passed away on Oct 12 Father Anselm Smedile O S B led the group in a prayer Dr DiSalvo asked the group to look to their faith to carry them through this difficult time as he read an email he received from Daniel Breen s father Dr DiSalvo also quoted Fr Anselm s homily from the funeral Mass in response to how to cope with the death of someone so young by remembering the words of Pope Francis Quiet quiet After lunch faculty staff and students joined alumni and parents at Grappone Stadium to cheer on the football team as the Hawks took on Merrimack College Junior wide receiver Justin Bernard caught nine passes including one for a touchdown but the Hawk s suffered a 51 9 homecoming loss despite the crowd s enthusiasm Read the full story Saint Anselm sophomore Jessica Avelar a national champion twirler performed before the game while the college Dance Team performed during halftime Throughout the day alumni also enjoyed tailgating and food and drink in the picnic grove skating in the Sullivan Arena and touring campus by trolley PHOTOS Images from from Homecoming Weekend NEWS Outstanding Alumni Receive Awards Alumni Association Awards Dinner BLOG

  • Fine Arts Department Expands Musical Offerings : Saint Anselm College
    music Katherine Hoffman Ph D chair of the fine arts department has announced that beginning in fall 2014 the department will offer music lessons for academic credit with class instruction in piano and individual instruction in voice piano guitar and other instruments The fine arts department has been hoping for something such as this program emphasis for close to 20 years Hoffman says We are very excited about offering students more performance opportunities Our new courses ensembles and music lessons will also add much to the cultural life on campus and in the surrounding community In order to facilitate music performance on campus the college will purchase new Yamaha pianos and renovate class space in the Dana Center for the Humanities into student practice rooms The fine arts department hopes to enhance music performance by offering new spaces for music ensembles to rehearse as well as electronic keyboards and state of the art music software for hands on class piano and music theory instruction The department recently added a new faculty member who specializes in composition music theory and piano Francis Kayali D M A Kayali s music has been performed by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project BMOP among others He has received commissions from the Chamber Opera of USC and Bowdoin College but his most recent commission was for Saint Anselm College He composed the Presidential Fanfare for the upcoming inauguration of the college s tenth president He will be featured in a recital as part of the Fine Arts Series November 7 in the Chapel Art Center The college s other music professor is Sean Parr Ph D who is a music historian and an operatic tenor Parr teaches music history courses and will also teach voice lessons He has performed many operatic
