  • Saint Anselm to Inaugurate Tenth President : Saint Anselm College
    its first lay president in its nearly 125 years Because the position of president has been held by monks throughout its history the college has never before held an inauguration ceremony It will be a busy exciting weekend on campus since inauguration coincides with Homecoming Weekend Preparations are in full swing involving almost every aspect of the campus Even the Alumni Hall ivy has had a haircut Inaugural weekend events begin on October 16 with an academic symposium featuring presentations on the history and the future of the liberal arts The senior class will join Dr DiSalvo that night at the Pub The college s trustees will gather on campus October 17 On Friday October 18 the installation ceremony will begin at 3 30 following Mass at the Saint Anselm Abbey Church It begins with an academic procession including the Saint Anselm faculty and delegates from 35 colleges Alumni trustees state officials Bishop Peter Libasci and other dignitaries will also attend Charles M Pollard chair of the Saint Anselm College Board of Trustees will confer the office of president upon Dr DiSalvo About 200 students will be involved in the inauguration as greeters escorts and information booth volunteers Students will

  • College Answers the Call for Interfaith Service : Saint Anselm College
    President s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge National Gathering brought 20 faith based colleges from around the country to the capital in an effort to encourage dialogue between colleges that are just beginning programs in interfaith community service and those like Saint Anselm with longstanding traditions in this work The program is led by Eboo Patel founder of the Interfaith Youth Core which aims to build religious pluralism across our nation s campuses using President Obama s Challenge to commit to a year of interfaith and community service programming Service is a major driver to interfaith dialogue said Dr DiSalvo Many students do service work which is remarkable when you consider for example that you may have five students from five different religious backgrounds hammering nails into the same wall When it comes to service work it doesn t matter what faith or color you are Proud to represent Saint Anselm College at The White House for meeting on Interfaith Dialogue on College Campuses hosted by Eboo Patel Steven R DiSalvo Dr DiSalvo September 23 2013 The two day event included a reception at the White House hosted by Interfaith Youth Corps followed by a luncheon at Georgetown University hosted by President John J DeGioia as well as U S Secretary of Education Arne Duncan who offered support for these initiatives That support for Saint Anselm College will include direct conversations with the Interfaith Youth Core and potential training for the campus community In addition Dr DiSalvo raised the issue of the government s college rating system which is based on statistics such as student debt and default rates while excluding non financial factors such as a college s commitment to service I asked for a balanced scorecard to incorporate service because not everything can be quantified in dollars

  • College Community Celebrates the Diaconal Ordination of Fr. John Paul : Saint Anselm College
    Joseph Gerry O S B during Mass on Wednesday Oct 2 in the Abbey Church at Saint Anselm College As a deacon Father John Paul is now at the service of the Church and able to assist priests in their various ministries In speaking of his ordination Father John Paul said you are immediately made aware of two things the dedication the Church expects of you and at the same time your total inability to fulfill those expectations without the Lord s help Father John Paul was presented for ordination by Abbot Mark Cooper O S B Bishop Joseph former abbot and bishop emeritus of Portland Maine celebrated the Mass During the Rite of Ordination Bishop Joseph spoke of the duties and responsibilities of a deacon reminding Father John Paul that a deacon is called to be a minister of service a minister of charity No deacon can serve Christ worthily without a heart full of charity said Bishop Joseph in his homily Upon promising his obedience and respect to the Bishop Father John Paul was vested by Abbot Mark with the appropriate stole and dalmatic Retired Abbot Matthew Leavy O S B assisted in the vesting Father John Paul professed his solemn monastic vows this summer He is in his final year of theological studies at St John s Seminary in Brighton Mass and hopes to be ordained a priest in June 2014 Originally from Concord Father John Paul graduated from Bishop Brady High School in 1998 earned a bachelor of arts in communication from Southern New Hampshire University and joined the monastery as an observer in 2007 The ordination took place on the Feast of the Guardian Angels the patrons of the Benedictine s Order The Order of St Benedict in New Hampshire was established in 1889 and

  • Fr. Augustine to Leave Position of Dean and Vice President : Saint Anselm College
    to step down as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college Dr Steven R DiSalvo president of the college announced Fr Augustine s decision today Fr Augustine s accomplishments are too numerous to list Dr DiSalvo said Among the most notable are the establishment of an RN to BSN program and several new majors including those in education and communication He introduced minors in the curriculum and provided oversight and guidance of the college s new core curriculum effort In addition Fr Augustine oversaw the renovation of Joseph Hall as an academic center now housing faculty offices and seminar classrooms Dr DiSalvo said Fr Augustine wrote the Saint Anselm College Anthem which was composed by Fr Bede Camera O S B Fr Augustine entered Saint Anselm Abbey in 1981 and graduated from the college with a degree in psychology in 1984 He earned a master s degree in theology from St John s Seminary in 1988 and was ordained a priest the same year He taught in the college s humanities program and served as assistant registrar and registrar before pursuing further graduate work in Scotland At the University of St Andrews he earned a M Litt

    Megan Chapel Art Center at Saint Anselm College presents Reflections of the Day an exhibition of landscapes by contemporary artist Sandy Wadlington with an opening reception on Thurs Sept 26 6 8 p m As a New England based artist with formidable artistic roots she is a descendant of the pioneer American landscape painter Alvan Fisher Wadlington has marked her own path with the hands on media of pastel caran d ache and color woodcuts Suffused with light and a quality of naturalism her works are faithful to the American landscape tradition Modernist in their patterned simplicity they also capture the sensations of passing moments This exhibition available Sept 27 Dec 7 is the third in a series of landscape exhibitions the Chapel Art Center has presented beginning in fall 2011 with the modern New England based painter Charles Curtis Allen in Hills in Echo and continuing with contemporary painter Lauren Sansaricq s Hudson River School style landscapes in The Glimmer of Light in fall 2012 The gallery has organized several programs and events to accompany the exhibition including a special lecture with curator Nancy E Green from the Herbert F Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University on Thurs

  • Bready Chair Discusses Political Benefits to Reading Aristotle : Saint Anselm College
    politics says Aristotle helps us see that political life inevitably involves us in contested and politically irresolvable claims over ethics and justice Reading Aristotle thus prepares us for action in the messy exercise of political power Josephson discussed Aristotle s views on ethics in the first of his lectures as the Richard L Bready Professor in Ethics Economics and the Common Good His lecture was entitled Aristotle s Surprise Poetics and Moral Realism Aristotle s On Poetics remains an essential account of the nature of tragic drama but it also considers the problem of ethical education Professor Josephson explores Aristotle s text and finds that the moral imagination of Aristotle s tragic poets leads us to a realistic understanding of the uncertainty and complexity of morality Audiences prefer happy endings the professor said however life offers far more nuance and contradiction He quoted Aristotle saying Any given thing has both good and bad consequences Public policies are never entirely good even though leaders refuse to acknowledge that fact Josephson said Necessarily contentious politics is a way of mediating the self interest of different people People want to believe they act nobly even while they pursue their own interest he said Josephson is the third Bready Professor since the chair was endowed in 2005 by Richard Bready 65 a trustee and generous supporter of the college The chair provides scholars with the opportunity to study the relationship between ethics and specific disciplines in the liberal arts It also supports the examination of how ethics and the disciplines function in a free market economy During his three year appointment Josephson plans to complete his second book on John Locke examining the role of the philosopher in the political community He will deliver a lecture on that topic on April 8 He also

  • Saint Anselm Ranks in Top Tier of National Liberal Arts Colleges : Saint Anselm College
    s standing represents a 10 point rise in its ranking compared to the 2013 edition We are pleased to see Saint Anselm College fare so well in this closely watched ranking said Dr Steven R DiSalvo president of the college At Saint Anselm we pride ourselves on delivering a high quality education in a setting where the students success is our highest priority U S News World Report measures colleges according to such factors as average freshman retention rate 86 percent for Saint Anselm the graduation rate 74 percent and the percentage of first year students who were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class 20 percent Assessments by high school guidance counselors the percentage of alumni giving and acceptance rates are also among the data included in the methodology This is the latest college survey in which Saint Anselm is ranked favorably compared with other colleges and universities nationally On the important question of whether a college education is worth the investment PayScale an online salary benefits and compensation information company ranked Saint Anselm 216 among colleges and universities nationally for return on investment Its ROI is the 21 st highest among institutions in the six New England states and one of only two colleges in New Hampshire that were included the other being Dartmouth college Statewide Saint Anselm was ranked second by AffordableCollegesOnline org which analyzed 45 colleges in New Hampshire and ranked the top nine that provided students with the greatest lifetime return on investment Data from earlier this year show that 98 percent of the college s 2012 graduates were employed in graduate school or engaged in service The news comes at a time when many people are asking whether the cost of attending college especially a private liberal arts college is

  • Alumna Remembered Through Fund for Service : Saint Anselm College
    love for her fellow human beings is being recognized at her alma mater in a way that will benefit countless people from her fellow Anselmians to needy children Last year Kathleen Mulcahy Miskell 06 died tragically in a parasailing accident while on a vacation with her husband As a student Kathleen participated in Road for Hope and in two Service Solidarity trips one to help orphans in Honduras and one to build a home in Jacksonville Fla with Habitat for Humanity Because of her selfless generosity Kathleen s family decided to do something important in her honor They began a fund in her name which will help other students make the commitment to service Aid from the fund will be given to Saint Anselm College students who need financial support in order to participate in the kinds of mission trips that Kathleen deemed so critical Spearheaded by Kathleen s father Jim the fund raising has already resulted in more than 30 000 On Sept 8 a group of about 30 friends and family members attended a Mass for Kathleen in the Saint Anselm Abbey Church and then joined together for the unveiling of a remembrance plaque Members of the Office of Campus Ministry and Joseph Horton Vice President for Student Affairs were in attendance Campus Ministry is touched and honored to be the recipient of the Kathleen Mulcahy Miskell Memorial Fund for the Service and Solidarity Program and we are proud to be able to honor Kathleen s love of service through our Service and Solidarity mission trips says Joycelin Raho campus minister Remembering Kathleen in this way is a beautiful testament to who she was and what she loved and I am honored to assist her family in doing so Support the Kathleen Mulcahy Miskell Memorial Fund for the
