  • Saint Anselm College's New President Takes Office on July 15 : Saint Anselm College
    Jonathan DeFelice O S B to Steven R DiSalvo Ph D who will become the college s 10th president The two leaders will attend the 8 30 a m Mass in the Abbey Church before heading to Alumni Hall where Father Jonathan will hand Dr DiSalvo the keys to the Office of the President Dr DiSalvo is the first layperson to be named president in the college s 125 year history He succeeds Father Jonathan DeFelice O S B who will retire this summer after 24 years as president We are thrilled that Dr DiSalvo has agreed to serve as the next president of Saint Anselm College said Charles W Pollard chair of the Saint Anselm Board of Trustees and Abbot Mark Cooper O S B chancellor of the college He brings the vision and experience that will serve the college well in this exciting andchallenging time in higher education He also has a demonstrated commitment to Catholic liberal arts education and the Catholic faith which is at the heart of our mission at Saint Anselm Dr DiSalvo previously served as president of Marian University in Fon du Lac Wisconsin and as president and founder of The Hopewell Group Inc He was also Executive Director of the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation He has worked for three Jesuit universities Fordham Loyola Chicago and Fairfield where he raised money and worked in the office of the president Dr DiSalvo earned a Ph D in educational leadership at Fordham University where he also earned an M B A in marketing and B S in psychology The college celebrated Father Jonathan s 24 years of leadership throughout the 2012 2013 academic year Father Jonathan is a member of the Benedictine community that founded and governs the college and a graduate of the

  • Bro. John Paul Professes Solemn Vows : Saint Anselm College
    on Thursday July 11 when he professed solemn vows during a Mass celebrated at the Abbey Church on the campus of Saint Anselm College Standing before his 23 confreres from the monastic community Bro John Paul took the three vows of the Order of St Benedict stability obedience and conversatio morum The Benedictines are the only Catholic religious order to profess conversatio which means conversion of life and represents an ongoing dedication to growth in monastic life Abbot Mark Cooper O S B welcomed Bro John Paul saying the monastic life offers humble but profound work The monastic life well lived is a bright beacon guiding others to Christ he said Bro John Paul is from Concord N H and is the son of Douglas and Paula James He was known as Cory James when he graduated from Bishop Brady High School in 1998 and then earned a bachelor of arts in communication from Southern New Hampshire University He joined the monastery as an observer in 2007 after working at the Lambert Funeral Home in Manchester and taking courses in funeral service at the Funeral Institute of the Northeast in Norwood Mass I had a good job I had friends I had all the signs of success you could want he said Yet I wasn t happy There was an underlying truth not being fulfilled After a month as an observer Bro John Paul became a postulant and then a novice learning the monastic life and taking philosophy and theology courses at Saint Anselm College He took his religious name for Blessed John Paul II the late pope Read more about becoming a monk He spent five years as a junior monk before petitioning the community to make his final vows This is a beautiful way to live a life

  • Five students are the First Graduates of the RN to BSN Program : Saint Anselm College
    10 2013 Laura Lemire Communications and Marketing 603 641 7242 At the conclusion of the 2012 2013 academic year five nursing students became the first to complete Saint Anselm College s RN to BSN Program Scott Arthur Brigid Dahlberg Cynthia Darois Lisa Rappa Mannion and Kathleen Richardson were the first registered nurses to be accepted into the RN to BSN Program and earn their bachelor of science in nursing from Saint Anselm Four of the five graduates attended the college s 120th Commencement on May 18 where they received their diplomas from retiring president Father Jonathan DeFelice O S B Through the college s RN to BSN Program registered nurses holding an associate degree may obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSN through online and on campus courses taught by the college s full time faculty The program s first set of graduates attended full and part time Rappa Smith who worked at several hospitals and attended school full time was able to earn her degree in 15 months the minimum amount of time the program requires The other four graduates earned their degree in 18 months For more information about the RN to BSN Program visit www anselm

    and triple rooms Saint Anselm College Home Page News College Breaks Ground on Residence Hall Main Content College Breaks Ground on Residence Hall July 10 2013 Laura Lemire Communications and Marketing 603 641 7242 College officials broke ground on the new 47 000 square foot 150 bed residence hall on Wednesday July 10 Breaking ground on the building was a momentous occasion for retiring president Father Jonathan DeFelice O S B who played a key role in bringing the project to fruition The residence hall is expected to be ready for occupancy in the fall 2014 semester and will be located at the lower entrance to campus behind current residence halls Bertrand and Brady Hall It will be an innovative living learning community that extends the college s efforts to integrate academic and residential life It will be organized into neighborhood suites with single double and triple bed rooms common areas and additional study space In a brief ceremony Abbot Mark Cooper O S B College Chancellor gave a blessing and prayer before the plans were revealed and first shovel was put into the ground Father Jonathan thanked the staff architects and especially the Dean of Student s Office including residential life staff who were determined to fill this need for student housing Lavallee Brensinger Architects and contractor Eckman Construction were on hand to answer questions about the current schedule and renderings Incoming president Steven R DiSalvo Ph D and Abbot Mark were involved in the ceremony as well as vice president of finance Harry Dumay and vice president of student affairs Joe Horton In addition this summer the college s main quad in front of Alumni Hall is being renovated The platform around the college s namesake the statue of Saint Anselm is being enlarged with steps three quarters

    develop an Ethics in Governance and Investor Education Program for the benefit of New Hampshire citizens building upon the college s endowed chair The Richard L Bready Chair in Ethics Economics and the Common Good We feel the corporate governance program at UNH and the investor education program at Saint Anselm College will fulfill the mission of the consent agreement Ethical practices in corporate America should be a paramount consideration in educating future business leaders The establishment of these programs is a major step to accomplishing that goal stated Secretary of State Bill Gardner Chairman of the Board The Saint Anselm program will serve to educate present and future leaders inspire ethical practice and leadership reinforce a statewide culture of sound governance both public and private and improve public understanding of how concern for ethical behavior benefits the common good The program will offer opportunities for community engagement as well as online resources including podcasts videos and blog posts featuring seminars and speakers on ethical practices transparency and accountability in governing The program will feature seminars and speakers addressing relevant issues of ethical practices transparency and accountability in governing Saint Anselm and Jack Falvey a frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal and Barron s and adjunct faculty member at both the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Carroll School of Management at Boston College will develop an open online program to be delivered free of charge to the general public via email each business day These emails will cover a variety of relevant investor education topics At Saint Anselm College ethics is an integral part of our curriculum and the development of our students That is represented not only by our endowed chair The Richard L Bready Chair in Ethics Economics and the Common Good but in what our

  • Students Experience Hands-on Biology in Belize : Saint Anselm College
    to Belize May 15 29 as part of the course Field Studies in Tropical Biology BI340 Belize Saint Anselm biology faculty Dr Eric Berry and Dr Lori LaPlante introduced students to the complexity of the tropics through field experiences in the rich ecosystems of the neo tropical rainforest and coral reef The course combined hands on exploration and field exercises with lectures on species diversity rainforest ecology and conservation fish behavior coral reef ecology and more Students studied the birds of the Belize area as well as fish behavior at all times of the day completed through day and night snorkeling While visiting the Belizean zoo at night during feeding time they studied a variety of animals including pumas jaguars howler monkeys and tapirs Hiking through the zoo the students got up close and personal with the animals they were observing In studying the nocturnal habits and feeding behaviors of the animals Kait Stazinski a sophomore biology major was amazed by her close proximity We had the chance to feed some of the animals and I even pet a Jaguar says Stazinski The group spent one day of savannah field studies at Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and several days of rainforest field studies at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary Jaguar Reserve as well as coral reef field studies at Tobacco Caye Tobacco Caye is a small island located right on a part of the Belizean coral reef The students conducted research underwater with waterproof paper and underwater slates You would just be swimming and the next thing you knew a huge ray twice your size would swim past you says Stazinski This biology adventure was one of many opportunities at Saint Anselm College to study abroad whether for the short time of two weeks or an entire semester Students who took

  • Multicultural Center Named for Father Jonathan : Saint Anselm College
    years as president of Saint Anselm and highlighted his deep commitment to educating students in a global world Early in his tenure it became clear to Father Jonathan that diversity awareness inclusiveness and cultural exchange were absolutely necessary not only for Saint Anselm College to stay true to its Catholic Benedictine roots but also for students to be prepared for the diverse world of the 21st century Father Jonathan had the vision to realize that in order to be successful in a world with a changing college aged demographic and a more globalized society a true Anselmian education needed to include cultural exchange and diversity awareness And from there the seeds of the college s multicultural center were planted said Chair of the board of trustees Chuck Pollard Esq 79 at the dinner The endowed fund in Father Jonathan s name will sustain the multicultural center and is expected to reach 250 000 dollars through the generosity of alumni friends faculty staff and members of the board of trustees Support the center and give to the fund now In paying tribute to 24 years of leadership Pollard thanked Father Jonathan reminding him of the great service the retiring president has done in advancing Saint Anselm College Your legacy will live on each and every day for generations to come and in the minds and hearts of thousands of alumni of this great institution One hundred and seventy guests attended Father Jonathan s dinner including former and current trustees special guests of Father Jonathan s alumni faculty staff and students Father Jonathan will retire in July 2013 Additional Information Learn more about the Multicultural Center Give to the fund in Father Jonathan s name in support of the Multicultural Center Visit the Inclusiveness Initiative website Read about Father Jonathan s 24
