  • Chapel Art Center Presents Robert Bauer Exhibition : Saint Anselm College
    Marketing 603 641 7242 The Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Art Center at Saint Anselm College presents The Quality of Introspection Portraits and Landscapes by Robert Bauer with an opening reception on Thursday January 31 2013 6 8 p m The Quality of Introspection considers the nature of Bauer s portraits alongside a group of uniquely reflective landscape drawings Following upon the inclusion of Bauer s Adam I in the gallery s 2009 landmark exhibition A Figural Presence this exhibition expands upon Bauer s concept of observation providing an opportunity to further the notion of poetic regard This exhibition available Feb 1 to March 16 2013 is the third in a series of suites the Chapel Art Center is presenting as it celebrates its 45th anniversary season The works of art are borrowed from Forum Gallery New York N Y and from the studio of Robert Bauer In addition the gallery features programs and events accompanying the exhibition including Curating a Conversation with artist Robert Bauer and New York poet and critic Elaine Sexton on Feb 13 at 4 30 p m See the full list of events at www anselm edu chapelart Image Credit Adam I 2009 tempera on

  • Students Volunteer on Winter Break Alternative Trips : Saint Anselm College
    and 5 the students traveled to Austin Texas New Orleans La Washington DC Camden N J and the Dominican Republic where they will spend the week focusing on service and community During these trips students build and renovate homes tutor children serve in soup kitchens as well as visit families and individuals in the community This year s Winter Break Alternative includes for the first time an Education specific trip with 14 Saint Anselm students studying to be teachers chair of the Education Department and Professor Laura Wasielewski as well as Fr Anselm Smedile O S B The group is working with Saint Anselm Alumnus James Melone of the class of 2005 who is head of the middle school at Saint Gabriel s Catholic School in Austin Texas Wasielewski will teach two to three workshops on ADHD to the school s teachers The Saint Anselm students will support the schools however they are needed Wasielewski says the trip is another way for education students to have a variety of experiences in the classroom In the future she hopes to expand both nationally and globally to diversify visits The Service Solidarity Missions program now in its 23rd year provides its participants

  • Students Experience History and Culture in Vietnam : Saint Anselm College
    the Cao Dai Temple and experienced New Year celebrations in downtown Ho Chi Minh City Follow the group s travels on the program s blog The group is visiting Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi with excursions to the Mekong Delta and other historic and cultural sites including Cu Chi and Cao Di The two week program immerses students in historical and modern Vietnam through Vietnamese roommates academic excursions around the country lectures and activities with Vietnamese peers Students will learn about pre colonial and colonial history the Vietnam War the modern economy Vietnamese demographics and society and the educational system Masur aims for his students to make the connection between history and contemporary society in all facets of modern Vietnamese life The group will visit the Hong Ngoc Humanity Center that supports communities and those with disabilities discuss environmental issues and learn about Eastern medicine including traditional Vietnamese medicine and acupuncture Part of the immersion process includes a homestay where the group will stay with a Vietnamese family during their two day excursion to the Mekong Delta The homestay gives students insight into Vietnamese daily life In addition while in Ho Chi Minh City the students will room

  • Donna Guimont to Retire After 36 Years in Saint Anselm Athletics Department : Saint Anselm College
    the Northeast 10 Conference Hall of Fame Donna is a legend of Saint Anselm sport Higgins said She has been an important part of the lives of Hawk student athletes for 36 years and I am very thankful she decided to stay on through this academic year as she has been a great resource to me in my first year at Saint Anselm as well as the student athletes and all the new coaches we have on staff My hope is she will continue to find a way to be a part of this department for many years to come after she steps away from her full time duties Higgins also added that the department will plan a celebratory event to honor Guimont during the spring semester with details to come After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1972 with a degree in Physical Education Guimont worked for five years in Manchester public and parochial schools while also playing basketball field hockey and softball in New England women s leagues She also had a two year stint as the assistant girl s basketball coach at Trinity High School Guimont then took the reins of the Saint Anselm women s basketball team in 1976 and led the team to a 9 1 mark her first season After going a combined 22 21 record the next three seasons Guimont kicked off a seven year run of dominance that saw her teams average 19 plus wins from 1980 81 through 1986 87 Following just the second losing season in her first 12 years on the job in 1987 88 Guimont returned Saint Anselm to the top of the Northeast 10 as her teams averaged 23 wins the next three seasons including back to back 16 2 conference marks and NCAA Tournament berths in 1989 90 and 1990 91 After losing to Bentley by eight in the conference championship game in 1990 Guimont brought the title to Saint Anselm the following season as she avenged the previous year s loss with an 81 76 victory against the Falcons Despite suffering only her third and final losing season in 1991 92 Guimont once again bounced back by averaging 20 wins and making two more NCAA Tournament appearances over the final four years of her coaching career At the same time that Guimont was becoming the winningest head coach in school history and creating one of the region s most respected programs she was wearing many other hats for the Hawks as well In addition to the duties she tackled in her first year Guimont also held positions as facilities coordinator and women s athletics coordinator at one time or another Guimont was a fixture on the Hilltop through four athletic directors and seven U S Presidents and held every position in the athletic department except for athletic director and sports information director Of all her roles there were two in the later part of her career that held great importance to her As

  • Fr. Jonathan Announces $1M Gift To College : Saint Anselm College
    of 1 million to support scholarships and campus improvements This generous couple has asked to remain anonymous The greatest part of the gift will provide financial aid for academically talented students of limited financial means who may also come from at risk communities Part of the gift will establish an endowed scholarship to assist deserving students in perpetuity and part will support annual scholarships through our new Impact Now fundraising model This new approach to fundraising enables donors to designate their gifts to the College priorities that interest them the most The gift also will fund the renovation and beautification of the Quad in front of Alumni Hall This project which is part of the campus master plan will involve a new platform around the statue of Saint Anselm new plantings re grading and perhaps a new walkway or two News of such generosity is welcome at any time of the year but I am sure you agree it has special resonance today as we prepare to celebrate Christmas and to welcome in a New Year Father Jonathan said I am deeply grateful to these donors for their commitment to our Anselmian mission Because of them our community will be

  • Loretta Brady Awarded Fulbright Scholar Grant in Cyprus : Saint Anselm College
    research on trauma informed substance abuse at the University of Nicosia a local therapeutic center and throughout the country including the occupied area of northern Cyprus She applied for Cyprus Fulbright grant because the country called for scholars in domestic violence and substance abuse In Cyprus psychology is a relatively young discipline and is handled differently than in the U S so the opportunity allows Dr Brady to offer her expertise and also observe the current system In researching the country she also found it had a sound infrastructure and would be a suitable location for her husband and family to live for five months Brady a licensed clinical psychologist is interested in substance abuse and mental health integration In the United States the two systems are separated however in Cyprus there is one system My goal for the project is to learn from a system of treatment that is more unified than ours and to evaluate the degree to which the system has applied knowledge about trauma informed care to its services A former pain psychologist at Elliot Hospital in Manchester N H Brady s clinical efforts have served returning veterans chronically ill patients professional teams families in crisis and patients with trauma and addiction She has additional certifications in leadership coaching addiction treatment infant mental health and conflict mediation She completed her post doctoral fellowship and consulted with Families in Transition where she helped design and implement trauma informed and family strengthening service systems Brady will travel to Cyprus with her husband Brian Director of Business Development Dyn Inc and five children living in a village in southern Cyprus close to the capital and university She is one of approximately 1 100 U S faculty and professionals who will travel abroad through the Fulbright Scholar Program in 2012

  • Saint Anselm Students Help in Sandy Relief Effort : Saint Anselm College
    and New York recently to assist in the clean up of areas devastated by Hurricane Sandy The volunteer trips were in addition to donations of cash and supplies sent by the college The Office of Campus Ministry organized the weekend service trips including to Manahawkin N J where students helped with a non profit organization Jersey Cares from Nov 16 18 The 17 students were present as families in Manahawkin were finally allowed to enter their homes which were scheduled to be razed The trip was highlighted by National Public Radio s Here and Now show Read the full story from Here and Now Twenty two students traveled to New York from Nov 30 Dec 2 to work with Gerristen Beach Cares in Brooklyn on Saturday and Staten Island Recovers Staten Island on Sunday Student leaders responsible for upcoming Service and Solidarity trips led the weekend trips which included 11 Knights of Columbus and a staff member In addition the college community has gathered monetary donations for Catholic Charities and material donations including clothing and food to deliver to a parish in Rockville Center NY A man who I helped told me that Humanity is re writing history and in
