  • College Donates Thanksgiving Baskets : Saint Anselm College
    7242 The spirit of giving on campus was in action on Monday Nov 19 as the Saint Anselm College community donated Thanksgiving dinner baskets for 120 families in the greater Manchester area Faculty staff and students joined in this campus wide project to put together baskets with all the traditional fixings including vegetables pie and turkey Trimmed with ribbon and balloons some in laundry baskets others in bags each basket represented the group who donated it The athletics office alone provided 30 baskets to the Abbey Church one for each of the varsity teams The baskets were delivered to the Abbey Church for the annual Thanksgiving Basket Blessing where they were sprinkled with Holy Water before distribution Photos Thanksgiving on the Hilltop During the blessing New Hampshire Catholic Charities Parish and Community Services Coordinator Steven Knight reminded contributors of the spiritual and physical nourishment the baskets will provide the 450 recipients In reflecting on this day Father Jonathan DeFelice O S B said Let us remember those whose day has been made brighter by this offering today Baskets were distributed by N H Catholic Charities and the Greater Manchester AIDS Project Monday also marked the first day of the college

    hope to have a solid career and a good income while also benefiting their community but are not sure they will be able to find a way to do it Recently about two dozen students heard a well known social entrepreneur explain how it s done Professor David Guerra physics invited Murphy to speak about this social entrepreneurship venture in particular and social entrepreneurship in general Murphy also explained the partnership that allows Saint Anselm science graduates to enroll in a unique one year program the Engineering Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Master s Program ESTEEM At least one recent Saint Anselm graduate has already completed the program and received several job offers ESTEEM is a professional master s program started at University of Notre Dame four years ago The focus is on how to craft a market oriented business model that matches science and technology innovation with business know how while having a positive social impact Students work with senior faculty at Notre Dame and take an idea from the bench to the market It s like a mini MBA for people with bachelor s degrees in science explained Murphy who directs ESTEEM and has co founded several technology

  • Anselmian Abbey Players Present "The Laramie Project" : Saint Anselm College
    the Anselmian Abbey Players will present The Laramie Project on November 8 9 and 10 at 7 30 p m in the Dana Center for the Humanities Sixteen Abbey Players will perform the more than 60 characters in the ensemble play which explores the depths humanity can sink to and the heights of compassion it is capable of One of the most performed plays in America today Time magazine calls it a pioneering work and powerful stage event Video The Laramie Project is a chronicle of life in the town of Laramie Wyoming the year after the murder of Matthew Shepard who was kidnapped bound to a fence beaten and left to die on the outskirts of the town in 1998 The play was created from more than 200 interviews Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project conducted with people of the town after the murder Following the November 8 performance the Saint Anselm College Core Council for Gay and Lesbian Students will hold a discussion based on the play and its messages The conversation will be moderated by a panel of faculty and staff and will be centered around questions submitted by community members Photos The Laramie Project is

  • Alumnus Discusses Eliminating Meningitis in Africa : Saint Anselm College
    603 641 7242 Alumnus F Marc LaForce will speak at the college Nov 13 about his successful effort to eliminate meningitis epidemics in Africa The 1960 chemistry graduate recently received one of the most prestigious honors in the field of global community health the Albert B Sabin Gold Medal Award for his work The Sabin Vaccine Institute presents the award annually to commemorate the legacy of the doctor who developed the oral polio vaccine For the past decade of his distinguished career in medicine LaForce has led the effort to eradicate the deadly bacterial meningitis epidemic in sub Saharan Africa by producing a revolutionary cost effective vaccine Millions of people in 25 countries have already received the vaccination and it has the potential to prevent one million cases of illness and save 150 000 lives The doctor directed the Meningitis Vaccine Project a Gates funded partnership with the World Health Organization from 2001 2012 He has taught at the University of Colorado and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and been an advisor to the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Physicians His talk takes place Tues Nov 13 at 7 p
