  • Students Walk for Charity : Saint Anselm College
    walkers will raise money for nine charities many of which they will visit while on their pilgrimage Road for Hope participants will return to campus on Sunday Aug 28 helping to mark the opening of a new academic year at Saint Anselm The Road for Hope seeks to provide funds for the needy strengthen the bonds in our communities and rekindle the belief that every footstep makes a difference according to the Road for Hope mission statement In a time when most of us are speeding through life the Road for Hope speaks to the value and joy of a slow walk Walkers stay in a variety of accommodations while on their trek sleeping on gym floors in churches and parks They brave sore feet and blisters yet when they make their final march up Saint Anselm Drive and onto campus where friends and family await they are ebullient Four Maine charities including Birthline of Portland and the Good Shepherd Food Bank of Auburn receive proceeds from the walk The New Hampshire organizations that benefit are Saint Charles Children s Home and the Recreation Arena and Youth Services both of Rochester the Candia Moore Drug Awareness Program in Candia Kids

  • Saint Anselm Earns High Marks on Forbes, Princeton Review Rankings : Saint Anselm College
    is among Princeton Review s 376 Best American Colleges scoring high marks in the Best Campus Food and Most Beautiful Campus categories Saint Anselm appeared on the Forbes list just below Boston University Mount Holyoke College and Saint Norbert College and outranked such institutions as Hobart William Smith St Michaels Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon The Center for College Affordability and Productivity a Washington D C think tank prepares the ranking for Forbes using data from the U S Department of Education It focuses on quality of teaching career prospects graduation rates and low levels of debt ignoring the question of a school s reputation We try and evaluate the college purchase as a consumer would Is it worth spending as much as a quarter of a million dollars for this degree Forbes says on its website The Princeton Review ranked Saint Anselm as 11 th for best food and 17 th for the beauty of the hilltop campus It also is listed among this year s 220 Best Northeastern Colleges Students almost universally gush about their passionate professors Princeton Review said in its description of the college A nursing student was quoted saying They are always willing to set a

  • International Relations Major Speaks About Debt Crisis at DC Conference : Saint Anselm College
    DC Conference July 27 2011 by Laurie Morrissey Marissa Serafino 12 president of the college s Student Government Association spent a lot of time this past summer looking at the ceiling the debt ceiling Troubled about the Congressional gridlock preventing an agreement on raising the nation s debt ceiling she stepped up to the microphone and had her say On Thursday July 21 the Saint Anselm senior was one of nine students who spoke at a nationally televised press conference in Washington D C The group represented a student coalition called Do We Have a Deal Yet The coalition had sent Congress a letter urging representatives to put aside partisan posturing and find a solution to the nation s debt crisis The 118 student leaders who signed the letter represented 1 million college students Serafino and the other speakers felt that failure to resolve the issue would be disastrous for young people facing an uncertain future and a tenuous job market She says her goal was to get the president and Congress to work together to come up with a bold balanced bipartisan plan that s going to increase economic growth in the long term Serafino majors in international relations

    Comments on the Capture of Mobster Whitey Bulger June 24 2011 Story by Doug Minor As special agent in charge of the Boston Office of the FBI from 2007 2010 the capture of mobster James Whitey Bulger was a top priority for Warren Bamford 80 Before his arrest Bulger was number one on the FBI s Most Wanted List a recent change after the killing of Osama Bin Laden Reached for comment by the Eagle Tribune after the arrest of Bulger Bamford said notorious gangsters like Bulger don t just launder money loanshark intimidate and brutally murder people They also meticulously plan their own escape strategies You re dealing with career criminals They plan the crime and they also plan how they are going to get away said Bamford Bamford a 1980 graduate of Saint Anselm College who still lives in the Merrimack Valley was very pleased but not surprised to hear Bulger was captured Bamford who retired from the FBI in 2010 and now works for the private utility firm National Grid said that during his three years Bulger was a major focus He told the Eagle Tribune that he was inundated with phone calls and e mails yesterday

    in the New Hampshire Republican Presidential Debate at Saint Anselm College s Sullivan Arena More than 300 journalists were on campus as well as 100 or so staff members of CNN which sponsored the debate along with WMUR TV and the New Hampshire Union Leader CNN s John King chief national correspondent and anchor of John King USA moderated the debate On stage were declared candidates Mitt Romney Rick Santorum Tim Pawlenty Ron Paul Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain Michele Bachman declared her candidacy during the debate The college community was fully involved in the events leading up to and during the event About 50 students worked as runners for the New Hampshire Institute of Politics and news organizations even serving as stand ins for candidates during lighting and camera preparation They worked as personal assistants for on air talent served as drivers couriers set up crew and met network executives and producers Saint Anselm has hosted presidential candidates for many years noted Fr Jonathan DeFelice O S B president of the college It has been something that s very much part of what Saint Anselm College is and since we founded the Institute of Politics 10 years ago Saint

    2011 Story by Barbara LeBlanc 603 641 7243 More than a dozen writers from the United States Canada Sweden and Australia will meet on the Saint Anselm College campus this summer to participate in the 16th annual Odyssey Fantasy Writing Workshop From June 6 to July 15 writers of science fiction horror and fantasy fiction will hone their craft in workshops and one on one sessions They will have the opportunity to present their work at a short story slam June 25 at the Barnes and Noble in Nashua from 2 30 to 4 p m This year s writer in residence is Gary A Braunbeck award winning author of 25 books and more than 200 short stories Jeanne Cavelos a best selling science fiction author and award winning editor is Odyssey s director and primary instructor She also is a Saint Anselm English instructor The students form a diverse group ranging in age from 24 to 57 and including a circus director producer an account manager for a biofuel company a handywoman and an assistant farm manager They have all made a six week commitment to improving their writing as they work to build careers as authors More than
