  • Energy Conservation Tips : Saint Anselm College
    minutes or other reasonable time Peripherals scanners printers etc that are not constantly used should be only turned on when in use and computers should be turned off when you leave your room or office or at night Monitors should also be turned off even if they have a sleep setting It does not hurt your computer to turn it on and off Everyone turn off lights and A V equipment as they leave their room office class dorm even those with auto on off Be aware of how much power equipment uses We will soon have borrowable Kill A Watt meters at the library See how much power your appliances use For electricity usage of typical appliances see the following webpages Alliance to Save Energy U S Department of Energy Vampire appliances use power even when they are off TVs stereos DVD players sleeping computers cell phone chargers computer peripherals anything with unused timers or clocks and motion sensors If they are plugged into a power strip you can cut off their power with one switch when you leave Replace the light bulbs in your lamps with compact fluorescent light CFL bulbs which use 75 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last much longer Smart power strips can automatically turn off items that are not in use Faculty should turn off lights and projectors when leaving a room and computers when not in use or use sleep mode Departments should turn off printers and other shared equipment at night and over the weekends We will be developing policies about the kind of appliances allowable in dorm rooms and offices Interested in helping form this policy Contact us Heating Keep your dorm windows closed during winter See Residential Life and Education for information on how leaving your window open

  • Conservation Projects on Campus : Saint Anselm College
    in classrooms and the library stacks so that the lights turn off when not needed Many classrooms have high low or dimmer settings on their light switches All campus building exit signs have been changed from 20 watt bulbs to 3 watt LED signs Roadway and outside lighting has been changed from time clocks to photo cells All lights in the Carr Center were changed to lower wattage energy efficient T 5 and T 8 lamps many of which auto dim during bright daylight hours All lights in Stoughtenberg Gym were converted to dual switching reducing electricity use by 50 All lights in Davison Hall were replaced with energy efficient LEDs and dimmable fluorescents All lights on the Founders Green and the new parking lot near Sullivan Ice Arena are energy efficient LEDs All exterior lights on campus buildings including the Abbey Church and the entrance sign have been replaced with LEDs Streetlights along main drives 175 watts each are being replaced with induction lighting 100 watts each and longer lasting Electricity Conservation Bathroom hand dryers at Davison Hall and Coffee Shop were replaced with more efficient Dyson dryers which use unheated air and run for a shorter period Exhaust fans in the dorm bathrooms automatically turn off at midnight and back on at 6am Capacitors were installed on all high voltage circuits All high voltage transformers are rated for low impedence All large motors have variable frequency drivers so that the power level can be stepped down as needed Miscellaneous All public printers were put onto a print release system that cuts down on wasted printouts All new decking is maintenance free which translates to lower use of chemicals and cleaning supplies Flooring in Goulet Science Center was replaced with epoxy surfaces which requires no chemicals to clean High

    single stream which means that all recyclable materials can be put into a single container without sorting them by type of material Residence Halls Where Now available in all residence halls and all student apartments with the exception of The Streets in Alumni Hall What Almost all plastics metal paper and cardboards How Collection bins or cans are in your rooms Recyclables should be put in bags preferably paper but plastic if necessary and brought to the nearest recycling dumpster Fine print Bags are necessary to prevent recyclables from falling onto cars in parking lots The College incurs financial penalties for trash in recycling bins It is important to follow the single stream guidelines for recycling Dining Facilities Davison Hall has recycling bins with single stream recycling Academic and Administrative Buildings All mixed paper white colored shredded placed in the large yellow bins will be recycled In the library all blue bins are routed to the yellow bins and recycled Coming soon single stream recycling for all academic and administrative buildings Physical Plant has installed a recycling compactor behind the Daley building By Fall 2013 they will begin daily pick ups of recyclables paper cardboard glass aluminum and most plastic from public buildings Recycling containers will be placed in each building for the convenience of faculty staff and students Swap Shop for Office Supplies The Environmental Stewardship Committee has set up a place where unwanted office supplies can be brought and shared It is located in Goulet Room 2201 to the left of the lecture hall on a bookshelf with spillover onto the table This is also the office of Sandra Provencher who supports this committee If you have something to contribute just drop it off or call Sandi at x7155 if you need it picked up If you need

    Covenant To learn more see the college s press release This action committed the college to the steps outlined in the Catholic Coalition for Climate Change s St Francis Pledge PRAY and reflect on the duty to care for God s Creation and protect the poor and vulnerable LEARN about and educate others on the causes and moral dimensions of climate change ASSESS how we as individuals and in our families parishes and other affiliations contribute to climate change by our own energy use consumption waste etc ACT to change our choices and behaviors to reduce the ways we contribute to climate change ADVOCATE for Catholic principles and priorities in climate change discussions and decisions especially as they impact those who are poor and vulnerable The Catholic Climate Covenant is designed to get Catholic organizations thinking about how they can respond to environmental issues in light of the Church s teaching on social justice and stewardship of resources Endorsing the covenant is a natural step as the college continues to pursue initiatives such as campus wide recycling and energy conservation that promote sustainability Activities On October 3 2012 the day prior to St Francis Day at 7pm the Environmental Stewardship
