  • Immersed in the Classroom through Notre Dame : Saint Anselm College
    in Notre Dame Ind to begin the next chapter in her story graduate school and teaching Allyn was accepted into Notre Dame s Alliance for Catholic Education ACE Program where she is earning her M Ed while teaching Spanish at Saint Sylvester School a pre K through eighth grade school in Chicago Ill Allyn s program integrates graduate level coursework with an immersive teaching experience She will spend two summers at Notre Dame studying as well as complete some distance learning courses during the academic year In Chicago she will gain experience in the classroom while also serving the Saint Sylvester community in multiple roles beyond teacher possibly as a coach club moderator and tutor At Saint Anselm Allyn had an impressive student athlete career She was captain of the women s cross country team and was named Female Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year She was a presidential scholar a member of Chi Alpha Sigma the National Student Athlete Honor Society as well as a Psi Chi and Sigma Delta Pi the Psychology and Spanish National Honor Society respectively In the summer after her junior year she conducted research funded by the NH INBRE grant one of 14 students

    Science for Soldiers Psychology Blog Apply Online Now Saint Anselm College Home Page Academics Majors and Departments Psychology Spotlight on Alumni Brain Science for Soldiers Main Content Brain Science for Soldiers Marianna s attraction to neuroscience began when she was an Undergraduate Research Scholar at Saint Anselm She went on to earn her Ph D in experimental psychology at Tufts University and did postdoctoral work at MIT There she focused on reading development and dyslexia in children She is now working at the United States Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center NSRDEC as a cognitive neuroscientist Scientists at NSRDEC research and develop equipment and technologies that support U S forces Recently Marianna visited a training site where she got a first hand look at the challenges that soldiers face Her team examined how wearing up to 60 pounds of full protective armor while completing various physical tasks impacts cognitive performance It s an incredible amount of responsibility but it s really worthwhile because it may have an impact on someone s life she says In addition to working with the U S Army Marianna is an instructor and visiting scholar in the Spatial Cognition Laboratory at Tufts University

  • Developing Devices for Doctors : Saint Anselm College
    being made Tools as common as a stethoscope and as complex as a magnetic resonance imaging system MRI are developed by biomedical engineers Giacometti is working to develop technologies that help medical professionals diagnose track and treat diseases that affect millions of people One of these is Alzheimer s a degenerative disease for which there is currently no cure Professors in the lab he works in are developing a head probe designed to measure neurological and vascular activity in the brain The technology exists to measure both but it is expensive and cumbersome The cap that Giacometti is working on does both at once making it more affordable and accessible Giacometti from Quito Ecuador also has a minor in computational physical science I think abstractly and have always had an inclination for design and for tinkering he says When he was interested in topics that weren t in the curriculum Giacometti s professors created courses He credits professors Schnick Guerra and Durham in the physics department and professor Malita in the computer science department for helping him to succeed The small size of the department allowed me to have an extremely personalized education professors who were available and very approachable and experiences and opportunities catered specifically to my needs he says Professors Malita and Durham created the computational physical science minor in his senior year making him the first person to receive it They all made me feel like they were working specifically for me to have the best college experience I could have he says Saint Anselm was a good fit for Giacometti and his two older brothers He went to a small high school where everyone knew each other so he wanted a small college where he could have that same kind of experience While at Saint Anselm

    Content An Engineer and His Robot It may not look like the robots from the movies but Alex Macomber 10 can attest that his orange robot gets the job done Alex is a senior services engineer at Kiva Systems where he helps companies automate their fulfillment system at warehouses That s where the robot comes in Alex leads the team that implements the software and builds the robots and shelving units to help companies fill orders more efficiently He manages contractors and junior engineers and keeps projects on track and on deadline Through Saint Anselm s 3 2 engineering program Alex has two bachelor s degrees which he earned in five years a bachelor of arts in physics from Saint Anselm and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame Now Alex travels the country providing a one stop shop solution to distribution centers like internet giant Amazon Having two degrees especially one in liberal arts and an engineering degree from Notre Dame sets me apart in the eyes of employers It s also given me a broad skill set that I use at my job every day And if that wasn t enough having

  • Penguin Pro : Saint Anselm College
    there she found her job at the Georgia Aquarium a place that she loves coming to every day I love the relationships I can build with the animals as well as the people I work with I can t look at the faces of the animals and be unhappy she says Odell has watched many animals give birth and has seen the babies grow into adults Watching penguins lay eggs and then seeing them hatch is one of the coolest things I have ever seen It s the miracle of life lived out in such a short period of time of only 40 days Odell likes showing other people what she does especially children I get to share my love and passion for animals and what I do with the guests You can see the excitement reflected in the eyes of the children she says It s a dream job for this biology major and her career is still on the move What is important hasn t really changed she says My job always will be about providing the best possible care to the animals In November of 2012 Odell traveled to Cape Town South Africa for two weeks to help the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds SANCCOB SANCCOB rescues and rehabilitates all coastal birds however much of their work is with African Penguins Odell admitted new birds provided daily care for the animals and helped with the release of six penguins back into the ocean Throughout her two weeks at SANCCOB the Chick Rearing Unit went from caring for four penguin chicks to 28 It was an amazing experience she says Odell has also been able to be a part of the ABC show Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin which works in conjunction with the

    personalized algorithm are all in a day s work for Web developer Jonathon O Reilly of the class of 2013 The math major computer science minor works at Christianbooks com where he was hired upon completing an internship with the organization the spring semester of his senior year Christianbook com is an online Christian book distribution company that sells books e books music and more It is the largest religious catalog company in the world sending out more than 65 mailings of unique catalogs to millions of customers each year The Boston Globe named the local organization the fifth best place to work in 2011 and the 14th in 2012 On campus Jon was captain of the men s lacrosse team and named Male Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year He was named to the Dean s List six times inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma the National Student Athlete Honor Society and a member of Saint Anselm College s TAU Chapter of the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic Honor Society He won the Paul S Coleman Service Award for the athletic department in 2012 and was also a Presidential Scholarship recipient He was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory

  • Doctoral Program Supports Hopes for a Cure : Saint Anselm College
    dives into her doctoral program at the University of Connecticut head first this summer hoping her research impacts suffering patients as well as science A biochemistry major at Saint Anselm College Jen is earning her Ph D in pharmaceutical sciences with a concentration in medicinal chemistry She works in the lab on organic synthesis and the evaluation of compounds for treatments of cancer and neurodegenerative disorders I hope to continue doing research in this field to help many people by preventing or curing a disease When I got to St A s I knew I wanted to help people but I knew being a doctor or a nurse wasn t for me Getting involved in undergraduate research made me realize that I could help people in many other ways says Jen Jen s undergraduate education involved considerable lab time Her senior year she successfully synthesized 10 molecules that only exist at Saint Anselm She presented her research at the college s SOAR Program a series that showcases outstanding research and artwork by Saint Anselm students During the summer before her senior year through Saint Anselm College s connection with the NH INBRE grant she conducted research on malaria cures at
