  • Saint Anselm College to Host New Hampshire's Only Presidential Primary Debates : Saint Anselm College
    IJ com The Republican Primary Debate is scheduled for 8 p m also in the Carr Center at Saint Anselm Every four years Saint Anselm College becomes America s Classroom in the election season preceding New Hampshire s Primary Home to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics NHIOP a political gathering place of all major contenders for the White House Saint Anselm has a rich history of hosting debates and presidential primary events ABC News chose the college for a Republican primary debate in January 2012 CNN previously held a debate at Saint Anselm in June 2011 CNN and ABC conducted four debates for the 2008 election cycle The New Hampshire Presidential Primary will be held on February 9 2016 marking the 100th anniversary of the Granite State conducting the first primary in the United States for the Presidential election cycle We re proud of our long record of participation in the presidential selection process especially this year the 100th anniversary of the New Hampshire primary said Steven R DiSalvo Ph D president of Saint Anselm College The opportunity to take part in the debates and to host the candidates and the national news media offers our students a unique educational experience and a memory they will carry throughout their lives There is no better way to learn about the process than to be part of it In 1984 the college hosted its first Presidential Primary debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters Over the past seven decades Saint Anselm College has experienced hundreds of visits talks speeches and other election related events including national political figures In the past 22 months 15 candidates for the country s highest office appeared at Politics Eggs a NH event series and tradition conducted by the New England Council and the NHIOP Moderated by ABC World News Tonight Anchor David Muir ABC Chief Global Correspondent Martha Raddatz and WMUR TV Political Director Josh McElveen the Democratic and Republican Primary Debates will air nationally on the ABC Television Network in Northern New England on ABC affiliate WMUR TV Channel 9 ABC Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos will anchor his signature program This Week from New Hampshire the morning after each debate About ABC News ABC News is the preeminent destination for 2016 election reporting breaking news and analysis All of ABC News 2016 election content will be available across ABC News digital platform and ABC will launch a new election portal with explainers to help voters make sense of key issues ABC News Radio will have extensive coverage for more than 1 500 affiliates ABC NewsOne will serve over 200 ABC affiliates and partners A bout WMUR TV Hearst Television WMUR TV is the leading source of television news in New Hampshire reaching more than one million people and is the largest commercial television station in the state WMUR com is the most viewed New Hampshire web site for local news An ABC affiliate WMUR is owned by Hearst Television recognized as one of

    Hampshire Institute of Politics Political Library NHIOP to present themselves and appeal to voters The New Hampshire Institute of Politics Political Library was founded on the premise that an educated citizenry is vital for a healthy democracy Since its doors opened in 2001 the Institute has provided a nonpartisan forum for discussion and debate on all aspects of the American political process Its mission is to educate engage and empower citizens to participate in the civic and political life of their local national and global communities The Institute offers unparalleled opportunities to be in the front row of a democratic process that impacts the world Tune in to any political news or talk show or pick up the day s Wall Street Journal or New York Times and you encounter individuals who have appeared at the Institute State representatives U S senators primary candidates and campaigners are regular visitors especially during an election cycle Here citizens hear major policy speeches high level candidate endorsements and interviews with global leaders They hear experts on issues such as the environment health care civil rights the economy international affairs all critical to decisions that have an impact on our lives Nowhere else in northern New England are there so many opportunities to meet today s most prominent thinkers Located on the campus of Saint Anselm College the Institute is housed in a 20 000 square foot facility that contains an auditorium television studio research center classrooms seminar rooms academic offices a computer lab and the Common Ground Café The facility is regularly used by community organizations such as the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce AARP New Hampshire American Legion political groups and high schools In 2010 the New Hampshire Political Library relocated to the Institute merging two of New Hampshire s great political

    News chose the college for a Republican primary debate in January 2012 CNN previously held a debate at Saint Anselm in June 2011 CNN and ABC conducted four debates for the 2008 election cycle Saint Anselm College has a history of hosting debates going back to the 1980s In 1984 the League of Women Voters chose the Dana Center for the Humanities as the venue for its New Hampshire Presidential Primary debate not only for its adequate seating proper lighting and sound and protection for the candidates but also because Saint Anselm welcomed the debate with classic Benedictine hospitality This debate which featured Walter Mondale John Glenn Jesse Jackson and the primary winner Gary Hart marked the beginning of an important political relationship between this small Catholic college and debate sponsors The excitement returned to Saint Anselm in February of 1988 Undaunted by a formidable February snowstorm the league sponsored separate Democratic and Republican debates broadcast by Cable News Network later known as CNN The 1988 Democratic forum featured Mike Dukakis Al Gore Bruce Babbitt Dick Gephardt Gary Hart Paul Simon and Jesse Jackson The next day George H W Bush Bob Dole Jack Kemp Pierre S du Pont and Pat Robertson gathered for the Republican debate In 1992 Democrats who wanted to unseat President Bush gathered in the Dana Center The debate the only one held without an audience at Saint Anselm was reported by CNN and New Hampshire Public Radio The candidates included Jerry Brown Bill Clinton Tom Harkin Bob Kerrey and Paul Tsongas The last debate held at Saint Anselm prior to the creation of the college s New Hampshire Institute of Politics was in 1996 featuring Republican candidates Bob Dole Steve Forbes and Pat Buchanan CNN sponsored the debate marking the end of the League of

    philanthropy with a history of executive positions at colleges and universities throughout the United States The tenth president of Saint Anselm College in Manchester NH and its first lay president Dr DiSalvo joined the college in July of 2013 after serving as president of Marian University in Wisconsin At Saint Anselm he has advanced the college s national reputation through scholarship athletics and via the prestigious New Hampshire Institute of Politics operated by the college Dr DiSalvo also serves on the boards of leading national higher education organizations like the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities NAICU where he is a member of the Board of Directors representing the northeastern states During his tenure at Marian University Dr DiSalvo strengthened the university s endowment improved its physical plant and added both undergraduate and graduate programs that focused on academic quality and service In addition to his higher education experience Dr DiSalvo spent time in the traditional non profit sector as president and founder of The Hopewell Group Inc and as executive director of the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation dedicated to ending domestic violence through education and other interventions At Junior Achievement of New York Inc aimed at inspiring K 12 students to be successful via business education he was executive vice president He began his career working consecutively at three nationally known Jesuit universities Fordham Loyola Chicago and Fairfield At all he worked in university advancement and at Loyola Chicago as special assistant to the president Dr DiSalvo completed a Ph D in educational leadership at Fordham University where he also earned an M B A in marketing and B S in psychology Currently he serves on the advisory board of the Center for American Catholic Studies at Fordham University the NCAA DII President s Council and
