  • NHIOP Ambassadors Attend National Campaign Conference at Harvard's Institute of Politics : Saint Anselm College
    voting process and how to work across the aisle Motta and Tetreault each felt the conference was rewarding and encouraged them to think outside the box especially when it comes to voter registration on campus I learned a wide variety of strategies and tactics about how to better encourage students on campus to register to vote and take action on issues that affect college students by going out and voting said Motta Because I heard from so many different perspectives I feel better prepared to combat the challenges of getting students from all different majors and interest areas engaged in politics and have many new practical ideas about how to get more students registered Students participated in a focus group with John Della Volpe Director of Polling at Harvard s Institute of Politics They had the opportunity to discuss why they are interested in politics and how they became involved They also spoke about their frustrations with the current two party system and feelings that much of politics today is largely ineffective and covered the characteristics they look for in presidential candidates Watch Video Morning Joe 9 30 2015 College kids unite for summit on changing politics 4 32 In addition conference attendees heard from Teresa Vilmain a national campaign manager organizer and political consultant on how to organize a successful voter registration drive She discussed successful techniques for voter registration organization and mobilization and then students broke out into small groups for discussion Various communications professionals also offered guidance on social media and marketing efforts for successful voter registration drives Speakers included Mo Elleithee the Executive Director of the Georgetown University Institute of Politics and Public Service Jennifer Friedman Deputy White House Press Secretary Benny Johnson Creative Director at Independent Journal Review and Matt Lira Senior Advisor to House

  • Saint Anselm College Celebrates Pope Francis’ U.S. Visit : Saint Anselm College
    S Rep Frank Guinta R NH DiSalvo said he was inspired to hear the Pontifex Having spent my career in Catholic higher education I feel particularly blessed to have attended this Mass Hearing in person the words of Pope Francis which provide inspiration every day to Catholics around the world was incredibly moving said Dr DiSalvo I was proud to represent the thousands of alumni students faculty and staff members of Saint Anselm College who find comfort and grace in faith and in service to humanity in keeping with that faith every day Watching Pope Francis Address Congress On Thursday as the Pope addressed Congress faculty staff and students gathered across campus to watch In addition to watch parties in the coffee shop and New Hampshire Institute of Politics NHIOP Common Ground Cafe students watched in Professor Joshua Snyder s theology class and in the Office of Campus Ministry Later in the day Campus Ministry and the NHIOP co sponsored a second viewing of the address followed by a discussion with Professors Jennifer Lucas politics and Joshua Snyder theology The theology colloquium then held a second discussion on the address on Friday morning for those who missed Thursday s event Gabert watched the address from her office and was struck by Pope Francis His words were powerful because the Gospel doesn t fit into political categories or ideologies she said It was nice to see a positive response to his message Anselmians Head to Philadelphia On Sunday a group of 54 students faculty and staff traveled to Philadelphia to watch the 4 p m Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Just being at a Mass led by our shepherd the Holy Father with 1 5 million others singing hymns praying the our father exchanging the sign

  • Chapel Art Center Fall Programming Offered : Saint Anselm College

    Katelyn Ellison Communications Specialist New Hampshire Institute of Politics 603 222 4115 On Saturday Sept 19 U S Senator Bernie Sanders I VT visited the New Hampshire Institute of Politics NHIOP for a Greater Manchester Town Meeting The line for Sen Sanders event at the NHIOP began forming hours before he was set to appear Upon his arrival Sen Sanders briefly addressed the crowd outside before entering the packed auditorium A very enthusiastic crowd of over 200 Saint Anselm students faculty and members of the public listened to the senator speak about his ideas for the future of the country During his hour and a half long appearance Sen Sanders addressed subjects such as the billionaire class youth unemployment paid family leave and trade policies Think big and not small he said as he concluded his remarks If we stand together there is nothing that we cannot accomplish Earlier in the day Sen Sanders spoke at the annual New Hampshire Democratic convention at the Verizon Wireless Arena and at the opening of his Manchester office Read More CBS News Bernie Sanders talks about his brand of socialism The Washington Post What Bernie Sanders means by democratic socialism You still have

  • Alumnus' Exhibition Kicks-off Fine Arts Fall Programming : Saint Anselm College
    scrape paint away to re find them and to repeatedly change their context to create an image says D Anselmi However each painting in the show is an individual attempt to find a meaningful image through oil painting accumulations of my own energy interests sensibilities and decision making suspended in time The artist credits the archaeological dig he experienced in 2012 with Professor David George with great impact on his career path he maintains that it is one of the reasons he attended art school after graduating from Saint Anselm where he double majored in fine arts and classics He graduated with his Master s in Fine Arts in painting from the New York Studio School in May 2015 The exhibition will be on display until December 16 In addition to exhibiting his work on campus D Anselmi will assist with senior fine arts thesis critiques and offer a mixed media workshop to the campus community Every year fine art seniors present their summer work or research at five critiques which take place over the course of their senior year Fine arts alumni often returned to campus to critique student work and offer their thoughts which makes it a fun communal experience says fine arts professor Kimberly Kersey Asbury On Friday Sept 25 1 30 3 30 p m D Anselmi s workshop on drawing painting collage and printmaking is in the Living Learning Commons LLC meeting room Additional Programming The Fine Arts Department s programming this fall ranges from music faculty performances to an exhibition of bronze sculptures by artist Ed Smith There will also be a preview hosted by the Geisel Library of a show to be installed in the LLC for the spring semester All events are free and open to the public Engage with the fine

  • Dr. LaForce Addresses Community at Academic Convocation : Saint Anselm College
    so began a humble effort that with God s good grace has grown from small beginnings to the college that we are entrusted with today How very fitting it is that following a year of reflection I am able to share with you today so much good news record breaking news in many instances as we now look forward with great faith in the future to our next 125 years of Catholic Benedictine education Following the president Dr LaForce s talk titled Distributive Justice and International Childhood Immunization examined global vaccination activities over the last 30 years from the perspective of infant immunizations as a health right He compared the pre natal care and percentage of infant immunizations now to those of the 1970s demonstrating the successful effects of global efforts to prevent childhood mortality in developing countries In talking about his experiences overseas he said a lot of problems come from lack of resources and personnel He said that the remaining challenges are often in countries ravaged by war where boots on the ground prevent vaccines and resources from assisting suffering mothers and children Dr LaForce also discussed the successful expansion of global vaccine coverage as a concrete example of distributive justice a concept of which he credits to a good ethics course and his own time on the Hilltop I spent enough time taking theology and philosophy courses that I never lost sight of the question of what do you do in terms of values said LaForce He maintains that the most important questions to ask oneself are what actions one is obligated to take when faced with injustice Director of the Office of Campus Ministry Susan Gabert ended the occasion with a closing prayer Video Dr LaForce s Full Remarks About Dr LaForce Dr LaForce director of

  • Saint Anselm College is Highly Ranked by “U.S. News” : Saint Anselm College
    national liberal arts colleges by U S News World Report s Best Colleges 2016 edition Released on Sept 9 the ranking puts Saint Anselm at 112 eight positions higher than the 2015 edition National liberal arts colleges are those that emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half their degrees in the arts and sciences This is the college s best ranking since moving into Tier 1 of this category in 2010 We are very pleased to see the accomplishments of our students and programs reflected in this important ranking said Dr Steven R DiSalvo president of the college The outstanding liberal arts education that students receive at Saint Anselm is an education for life and I m proud that our community provides such great support and opportunity for students both in and out of the classroom U S News World Report uses factors such as average freshman retention rate 87 percent for Saint Anselm and graduation rate 75 percent Assessments by high school guidance counselors the percentage of alumni giving and acceptance rates also are among the data included in the methodology Student selectivity metrics such as SAT scores and number of students in the top 10 percent of their high school classes are also reflected in the rankings As a result Saint Anselm earned recognition for enrolling stronger academic classes over the past few years Best Colleges also includes Saint Anselm on its A Schools for B Students list which distinguishes the college as seeking a broad and engaged student body The list acknowledges that Saint Anselm has a learning environment where more average students who demonstrate determination and hardworking commitment have the opportunity to thrive Among the criteria for inclusion on the A Plus List is a high freshman retention rate at least 75 percent which is
