  • Students Walk 130 Miles for Charity : Saint Anselm College
    32 Saint Anselm students continue their annual trek from Lewiston Maine to Manchester New Hampshire On Saturday August 22 the Saint Anselm College students began their journey walking 130 miles in eight days This year they have raised more than 15 000 for nine charities in Maine and New Hampshire I walk because it allows me to connect with charities through advocacy as well as direct service says student leader MaryPat Devine 15 a fine arts major This is the 17th year that Saint Anselm College students through the Office of Campus Ministry have made this modern day pilgrimage also known as the Road for Hope RFH walking in all kinds of weather Walkers stay in a variety of accommodations while on their journey sleeping on gym floors in churches and parks They rely on the kindness of shop owners charities and even an alumnus parents for hospitality and a moment s rest Throughout the week the six student leaders meet with the charities they are supporting to learn more about the organizations needs and to provide additional volunteer support The group also spent some time with the walk s founder Fr Seamus Griesbach Fr Seamus was the brave soul who decided to walk to school form his home in Lewiston Maine unknowingly creating a tradition that has touched thousands of lives says Devine He reminded the students that essentially they were just taking a walk His simple act allows us to better connect with the land each other and most importantly ourselves he says The students are expected to return to campus on Saturday Aug 29 welcomed back to campus by friends and family The charities receiving support include Maine s Birthline Catholic Charities of Portland Community Concepts of Lewiston Good Shepherd Food Bank of Auburn and Sanford Parent

  • Cole Fellow Recipient Interns at Communication Firm in Spain : Saint Anselm College
    of study enrich their knowledge base in preparation for graduate level study and forge professional relationships and learn the culture of the workplace Marie Horton 78 and Ron Cole 78 understand how vital this experience is to today s students and how difficult it can be for those who can t afford to forgo a paycheck for a summer A substantive internship has become essential for college students looking to enter the workforce says Marie Cole It is an opportunity to explore the field of study they have chosen and to experiment and perhaps expand their horizons It is also an opportunity for employers to meet future employees Unfortunately many internships are unpaid making it difficult for some students who want to work for the summer We are happy to extend this opportunity to a Saint Anselm student In order to make this a reality this year the Coles established the Cole Fellowship to provide funding each summer to one student in good academic standing doing a full time internship India Barrows 16 was the first recipient spending eight weeks this summer in Alicante Spain where she interned at a local communication firm Símbolo Ingenio Creativo There the Spanish and communication major worked directly with the director of communication doing translation for client websites and social media pages as well as writing blog posts in Spanish and English for the firm s own blog When on campus Barrows is an involved and dedicated member of the Saint Anselm community As a junior she joined activities at the Multicultural Center where she helped organize a Finding Unity Retreat for anyone who feels they re in an underrepresented group on campus I m a dreamer I have big ideas but executing them was difficult she says I ve learned to go ahead

    this summer with upperclassmen and members of the faculty and staff guiding students to the Adirondack Mountains of New York historic Gettysburg and two trips to the White Mountain Region of New Hampshire Passages is a unique opportunity to meet an amazing group of friends to start college with get acclimated to being Anselmian and spending time learning and having fun in extraordinary locations says Jean Couture Director of Student Activities and Leadership Programs I was very excited about the interest students showed in the program this year and look forward to the continued growth of the Passages Program in the years ahead Seventeen students participated in the first trip of the summer to the Adirondacks and spent their week trekking to waterfalls visiting Lake George for a fireworks show and living in community in the middle of the Adirondack wilderness Two seniors Meghan Rich and Dan Peltier both of whom participated in Passages trips as incoming freshmen guided the trip It was awesome to begin my senior year by revisiting the Adirondacks as a student leader on this year s trip says Dan Peltier 16 This trip definitely impacted me as a freshman I hope we made the transition to college a little bit easier for our participants First year student Kelsey Kurtz 19 blogged about her Passages experience and reflected on how the experience helped prepare her for the next four years I learned so much about myself this week I learned that I have the ability to do a lot more than I often let myself believe I know now that I should try new things that are thrown my way at school and fully embrace the experience I learned that I really need to test things out before I can just categorize them as something I
