  • College Celebrates Shakespeare's 451st Birthday : Saint Anselm College
    out scenes from Shakespeare s plays and festivities will be ongoing from 10 a m until 4 p m Other events taking place throughout the day of readings include performances from the Anselmian Abbey Players the Chamber Music Ensemble and the Royal Rochester Shakespeare Academy English professor Gary Bouchard began the tradition on April 25 1989 with 75 participants This year s celebration will take place on the piazza behind Alumni Hall with 150 readers For the 27th year in a row Fr John Fortin O S B and Carol Vachon a member of the business office will recite a sonnet In addition two sonnets will be spoken in different languages Assistant professor of politics Erik Cleven will recite sonnet 79 in Norwegian while junior Abdelaziz Alsharawy will recite sonnet 116 in Arabic This year s birthday celebration is sponsored by the English department with generous contributions from Daniel Barrett 95 and Judy Wenners The annual sonnet button given to readers was designed by MaryPat Devine 16 and of course per tradition birthday cake will be served Quatrains and couplets contemplating the passing of time and love s losses and free cake what could be better on an April day says Bouchard Schedule 11 15 a m Act II Scene V Twelfth Night 12 noon Act III scene II The Comedy of Errors 12 30 p m Chamber Music Ensemble and offering of early modern music 12 45 p m Recitations by members of The Royal Rochester Shakespeare Academy 2 15 p m Act V scene II Titus Andronicus After the conclusion of readings students faculty and alumni will gather at 6 p m in the North Lounge of Cushing for an alumni poetry reading and reception to celebrate professor Edward Gleason on his retirement after 47 years of teaching

    Anselm College Home Page News Summer School 2015 Main Content College Offers Summer Courses Online April 20 2015 Laura Lemire Communications and Marketing 603 641 7242 This year Saint Anselm College s summer school offers six online courses including core curriculum requirements for theology philosophy and Spanish Registration began April 1 and runs until the class begins Students can learn about the intersection of American politics and education in Getting Schooled Education Policy and School Reform or complete a theology requirement in The Pentateuch Other online summer courses include Understanding Suffering nursing social statistics sociology Spanish seminar and an ethics seminar philosophy This is the first time that the college has offered online courses which are available to Saint Anselm students only Though offered in a non traditional format they contain the same content and offer the same credit as those offered on campus Br Isaac Murphy O S B Vice President for Academic Affairs stated I think it s very exciting We want them to be distinctly Saint Anselm College courses high quality courses and a good experience for our students There is a way to move forward with this type of non traditional offering in a distinctly Anselmian way In addition the college is also offering more than 40 on campus courses from nearly every department during six sessions from May 18 to July 13 With each course lasting at least two hours they provide an intense immersion into the subject matter Courses range in subject matter from Hollywood and US History HI374 Shakespeare EN251 Psych of Addiction PY205 and Darkroom Photography FAS240 An interesting multidisciplinary course Getting Schooled is relevant to students majoring in politics education sociology social work history American studies peace and justice studies or psychology The course aims to build a framework for students

  • Historic Walking Tour, April 22, 2015 : Saint Anselm College
    know as Alumni Hall For many years that building was the epicenter of campus encompassing every classroom and dormitory at the college as well as all dining and recreational facilities In the many years since Alumni Hall opened its doors to the first students the college has grown dramatically from that one all encompassing structure The college upon the hill today encompasses 400 acres and 1 900 students live and learn in 52 buildings While several structures like Joseph Hall and Bradley House were built in the early 1900s much of the major campus expansion occurred between 1957 and 1966 when the first Advisory Board of Trustees led the college s first capital campaign the Once in a Lifetime Appeal During this period thanks to enterprising and generous local and regional business leaders Saint Anselm effectively doubled in size Six buildings including Geisel Library two residence halls Cushing Student Center a science center and Stoutenburgh Gymnasium were added In 1966 with the completion of the Abbey Church the campus was provided with a spiritual heart In the latter half of the twentieth century and early years of the twenty first Saint Anselm has continued to expand to include many more buildings and landmarks including now familiar centers of college life such as Davison dining hall Sullivan Arena and the Dana Center The New Hampshire Institute of Politics was established Bernard Court was built to strengthen the student residential experience and campus was beautified with the creation of the Campus Green In 2014 the Living Learning Commons a new 43 000 square foot residence hall housing 150 students was dedicated and additional spaces for prayer and quiet contemplation including the Multifaith Prayer Room in the Cushing Center and the Grotto housing the Madonna of Saint Anselm statue were installed We commemorate
