  • Students Present at New Hampshire Public Health Association : Saint Anselm College
    Hassan Reidy a biology major from Hudson N H and Robin Yoshida a sociology major from Los Alamos N M interned this spring for the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services Reidy s Lyme Disease Prevention toolkit included resources on how to look and check for ticks While interning with the Nashua Division of Public Health Reidy took part in a 15 minute question and answer spotlight on the Nashua Public Broadcast station about Lyme Disease with the state s expert Next year Reidy will attend Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Manchester to earn his doctor of pharmacy through their Accelerated Pharmacy Program PharmD Yoshida used an interactive map created from data she collected to discuss the social detriments of health a topic which was addressed during the 2014 Community Health Assessment She hopes the map will become an education tool to help community members better understand how income housing and poverty can affect public health During her time as an intern Yoshida worked with nurses an environmental science group and shadowed a local epidemiologist After graduation Yoshida plans on working with health outreach programs before going back to school for epidemiology with a long term goal of working in public health Reidy and Yoshida completed their internships under the supervision of alumna Ashley Conley 06 an epidemiologist at Nashua s Division of Public Health Community Services While interning there they experience the various sectors of public health including community health epidemiology environmental health and health education We hope our students gain a hands on public health experience at a local health department that allows them to learn about public health and build their knowledge for their future career says Conley This was the first time we had college students present a poster at the

    this field first while volunteering with refugee families in Manchester through the Meelia Center During my senior year I chose to write my thesis on a topic of law migration and public health I am interested in pursuing a career in law and migration as an immigration attorney my job with IAN puts me on the front line of immigration policy and advocacy Careers and Employment Post graduate activities find our youngest class of alumni working serving and continuing their education in fields from medicine to marketing and finance to research and counseling Of the 179 companies that hired the recent Saint Anselm graduates 21 hired multiple 2014 graduates Top employers include Massachusetts General Hospital Fidelity Investments Brigham and Women s Hospital Putnam Investments and State Street Corporation Over 80 of working 2014 graduates say their job has long term potential One hundred percent of the chemistry education financial economics and sociology graduates were employed or pursuing a graduate degree within six months of graduation Continuing Education The class of 2014 finds many graduates continuing their education at institutions including Dartmouth College George Washington University Law School Loyola University Providence College Berklee College of Music and Durham University in England The departments of chemistry history politics and psychology had the most graduates pursuing advanced degrees Photo Abby Krusemark 14 A Sampling of 2014 Graduates Brittany Barrett 14 a business major is an account manager at Cigna Health Insurance in Chicago Ill Lauren Clark 14 a communication major is a multimedia reporter for WHIO TV the local Dayton CBS affiliate and the Dayton Daily News Steven Coyne 14 a biochemistry major is attending Harvard University to earn his Ph D in biochemistry Nicholas Dries 14 a financial economics major is the assistant general manager of the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley N Y He interned with Simon Property Group as a junior and following graduation participated in their property management training program Matthew Donahue 14 a physics major and mathematics and Russian studies minor is earning his master s in engineering and business at Brown University Schyler DeChane Crawford 14 an accounting major joins several Saint Anselm alumni at Single Digits where she is a junior staff accountant Paxton Delano 14 a politics major is working for New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan Justin Eckilson 14 a history major and French minor is earning his master s in education through Providence College s PACT Program He attended graduate classes through the summer and is now teaching middle school social studies at Saint Michael School in Fall River Mass I decided that the best way for me to live out the Anselmian identity that the school developed in me would be to educate students in the classroom to share my love of history and all the lessons it provides he said Stephanie Orswell 14 a psychology major is attending Durham University in England earning her master s in developmental psychology Abigail Krusemark 14 an international relations major works for an IAN

  • Saint Anselm Nursing Students Awarded Oncology Fellowship : Saint Anselm College
    exposed to all aspects of cancer care including medical and surgical oncology palliative care radiation therapy infusion services and hospice services They also will attend educational programs and conduct research projects that will enhance their clinical education This fellowship is specifically developed for individualized learning in this specialty area so students have access to classes mentoring research and clinical experience says Associate Professor Caryn Sheehan who has 20 years experience in cancer nursing It is really the best part of nursing school wrapped up tightly in a summer package Foley and Boyer were selected along with 21 other students who study nursing at Fairfield University and Boston College The Susan D Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship was established by Frederick C Flynn whose wife had ovarian cancer To honor her memory and in gratitude for the care Susan received at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut Flynn set up the professional development program that was piloted last year at Greenwich Hospital Stamford Hospital Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Wentworth Douglass Hospital Professor Sheehan believes the fellowship is an exciting and unique opportunity Oncology is a specialty area that is challenging emotionally physically and morally she says adding that recipients will receive personal mentoring about the special needs of people with cancer They will then be able to apply this knowledge by providing direct care to patients across the entire cancer continuum from diagnosis to surgery radiation chemotherapy and beyond The fellows will return to Saint Anselm in the fall with a new understanding of cancer care Sheehan says When they return in the fall as seniors they will present their summer research to their peers and the entire nursing program will benefit from their experience Sarah Forster a current Saint Anselm nursing senior was selected for the program last year and was inspired

  • Sociology Major Receives Presidential Leadership Award : Saint Anselm College
    Leadership Award and to be named a Newman Civic Fellow by the national office of Campus Compact Hannah is a selfless leader says Dr DiSalvo She responds to almost every call for help but never seeks out attention or praise The friendships that she forms and the change that she contributes to is enough reward for her We have every reason to expect that Hannah O Halloran will continue to seek out friendships and make change in the community long after she graduates from Saint Anselm College O Halloran engaged with the college before she even enrolled as a freshman As a senior in high school she shadowed a Saint Anselm student and ventured out to a community based refugee outreach program during that shadowing experience Hannah joined the Meelia Center s coordinating team as a first semester freshman She wanted to experience everything from educational support and family enrichment to integrated pest management The more things she was able to master the more she wanted to try Hannah proved to be a reliable community partner an effective problem solver and an excellent manager of student volunteers and service learners says Dan Forbes director of the Meelia Center for Community Engagement Not surprisingly as a junior Hannah was promoted to a staff support role on Meelia s management team There she helps to manage over a dozen student coordinators I have always been passionate about being involved in service so it was no surprise that my love for service led me to going to Saint Anselm College Community Engagement has become a part of my every day life says O Halloran O Halloran received her award on April 7 at an event recognizing and celebrating service on college campuses across the state Campus Compact is a national coalition of more

    musical and spiritual quality of its music Every two years the members of the choir have the opportunity to participate in a European tour Saint Anselm College Home Page News Spring Choir Concert 2015 Main Content Choir Performs Spring Concert on April 11 April 02 2015 Laura Lemire Communications and Marketing 603 641 7242 The Saint Anselm College student choir will perform its annual free spring concert on Saturday April 11 at 7 30 p m in the Saint Anselm Abbey Church This year s event will feature a mix of traditional and new pieces by Bach and Hayden The choir s performance appropriate for the Easter season will include favorites as well as new offerings including Gregorio Allegri s Miserere a piece that Mozart heard at the Vatican and that struck him as so beautiful he had to write it down immediately It will be performed by a quintet of soloists In keeping with long tradition choir alumni will be invited to join in the singing of I Love You Lord and Brother Andrew Thornton O S B and Lyle Hamel 03 will be accompanists on the organ and piano respectively For 27 years the Saint Anselm Choir has attended important moments in the life of the college community Since 1987 they have sung liturgies in the Abbey Church and this year s choir consists of over 60 students This year s concert is under the direction of Sean Parr Ph D an assistant professor in the fine arts department Alumnus Robert Aldrich 01 is the assistant to the choir director Each year the choir offers two free concerts to the community December Song and the spring concert The choir performs at the Sunday Choral Eucharist at 7 p m and at other events such as Family Weekend For
