  • Young Alumni Participate in March Challenge : Saint Anselm College
    from the classes of 2014 to 2005 to participate in what has become an annual giving event March Challenge Every year classmates are challenged to band together competing against other class years to donate the most gifts to The Saint Anselm Fund during the month of March For March Challenge it doesn t matter how much the gift it matters how many alumni are giving Foundations grant giving institutions and ranking publications like U S News and World Report measure Saint Anselm based on alumni participation the number of participants rather than individual or total gift amounts Gifts of any amount can be designated to athletics campus ministry or scholarships through specific areas including Anselmian Scholarships Anselmian Support Anselmian Academics Anselmian Life and Anselmian Athletics Learn more See which class is in the lead Through March Challenge overall young alumni participation has increased the last three years In 2014 the class of 2012 gave the most gifts but 398 young alumni total participated setting the record for the highest young alumni participation rate in one month Moreover together alumni raised more than 15 600 Alumni are encouraged to spread the news about the SAChallenge through social media Gifts must be

    Saint Anselm Medal Main Content College Awards Saint Anselm Medal to Cardinal March 16 2015 Michelle Adams Communications and Marketing 603 641 7240 125 years ago under the leadership of our Benedictine founding fathers Saint Anselm College was dedicated to the mission of providing an excellent Catholic liberal arts education in an atmosphere that encourages and supports the intellectual moral and spiritual growth of its students As the 125th Anniversary year celebration continues The Feast of Saint Anselm in April is an opportunity to remember Benedictine roots and to recommit to their ideals In this spirit the college will this year award The Saint Anselm Medal in honor of its patron Saint Anselm of Canterbury who distinguished himself as a Churchman Philosopher and Theologian The medal was first awarded in at the college s centennial in 1989 and is presented to honor a person who has made a significant contribution in at least one of the same areas as Saint Anselm himself The entire college community is invited to a Eucharistic Celebration and the Awarding of The Saint Anselm Medal to His Eminence Gerald Cyprien Lacroix I S P X Cardinal Archbishop of Quebec City Primate of Canada The ceremony will take place on Friday April 24th at 2 30 p m in the Abbey Church Cardinal Lacroix was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope Francis in February 2014 Prior he was installed as Archbishop of Quebec City in March 2011 after serving as auxiliary bishop since 2009 He was ordained a priest in 1988 after earning a master s degree in pastoral theology at Laval University As a member of the Quebec based Pius X Secular Institute he spent a decade in Colombia doing missionary work Born in Quebec he spent part of his youth in Manchester

  • Abbey Players Present "Thoroughly Modern Millie" : Saint Anselm College
    Millie at the Dana Center The Abbey Players will perform March 20 21 at 7 30p m March 22 at 2 p m and March 27 28 at 7 30 p m Thoroughly Modern Millie based on the 1967 film of the same name tells the story of small town girl Millie Dillmount who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love a thoroughly modern aim in 1922 Millie soon takes delight in the flapper lifestyle but problems arise when she checks into a hotel owned by the leader of a white slavery ring in China The production involves more than 45 students with 29 in the cast alone The cast includes Steph Conti 18 a psychology major of Londenderry N H as Millie Dillmount the young modern woman from Salina Kan while politics major Garrett Meyer 18 of San Jose Calif plays Jimmy Smith a handsome carefree young man who makes his way through life on whim and wits The musical opened on Broadway in April 2002 winning six Tony Awards including Best Musical The music from the show is written by Jeanine Tesori with lyrics by Dick Scanlan and a book by Richard Morris

  • Former Romney Advisor Peter Flaherty to Join NHIOP as Senior Fellow : Saint Anselm College
    the cofounder and Principal of The Shawmut Group a public affairs and political strategy consulting firm He served as national deputy campaign manager for Mitt Romney s 2008 campaign and senior advisor for strategy for his 2012 campaign He counseled Governor Romney on issues ranging from judicial nominations to bioethics and advised him on debate preparation for close to 50 presidential debates He also served as a senior advisor for strategy and debate preparation to United States Senator Scott Brown during his 2014 campaign for United States Senate Before delving into national politics Flaherty served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney s Office in Boston He also served in the administration of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Lt Governor Kerry Healey His roles included Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Romney Chief of Staff to Lt Governor Healey and Chief of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs He currently serves as a trustee on the Board of New England Law Boston and is Vice President of the Board of the Suffolk County Children s Advocacy Center As a Senior Fellow Flaherty will offer seminars for Saint Anselm College students about modern presidential campaigns covering topics such as debate preparation messaging and strategy and faith and politics David Axelrod former Senior Advisor to President Obama and current Director of The University of Chicago Institute of Politics says While we come from different parties I hold up Peter Flaherty as a shining example of politics at its best He is in the arena because he loves his country cares about people and sees politics as a calling And he is very skilled at it The students at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics have much to learn from his experience and his example Former New Hampshire Governor John H

  • Professor Combines Sports and Statistics : Saint Anselm College
    Stephen Shea associate professor considers the course a perfect medium through which to teach mathematics and statistics He is teaching sports analysis for the third time this spring Class discussions may cover the existence of a hot hand in sports or an evaluation of team decisions on the court or field Past student projects have included plans for NHL realignment and the effects of sweat on submission moves in ultimate fighting competitions With basketball season in full swing and with Shea s personal love of the game the class currently focuses on basketball analytics We have looked into the value provided by the new data collected by SportVU s spatial tracking system he says Last season was the first in which all NBA teams collected and had access to this data Most recently we looked into reclassifying NBA player skill sets in the same spirit as Muthu Alagappan s work We have also enjoyed a few laughs thanks to Charles Barkley s anti analytics rant on TNT Barkley refers to those that do analytics as idiots The class is open to students of all majors Mathematics major Zachary Heckt 17 is fascinated to see how math comes into play when finding the right players for the teams in each league We are doing a project in which we look at what we think are important statistics in a sport of our choosing and redefine positions in sports to be more specific of the type of players there are he says Besides teaching students how to analyze sports quantitatively Shea writes books blogs and articles on the subject and often serves as a consultant to professional sports teams He began consulting in 2013 after being a finalist in the Stat Geek Idol Competition at TeamRankings com The site s CEO told

  • New Art Exhibit Features College's Collection : Saint Anselm College
    Art Center opens the third and final installation in its year long exhibition honoring the 125 th anniversary of Saint Anselm College s founding The final phase of Reverie Realizing a Collection features a special grouping of women modernists from the 20 th century as well as contemporary works It is an exciting group of works focusing the modern and contemporary side of the collection says Fr Iain MacLellan O S B director of the center Each installation has drawn from a specific aspect of the permanent collection he says The first installation in the sequential exhibition focused on historical works The second highlighted artworks from the Studio of Christian Art which existed at the college from 1893 1942 The installations are designed to celebrate the college s long tradition of creating collecting and displaying artwork for the college community as well as for visitors from throughout New England An opening reception will be held Thursday March 12 from 6 8 p m Reverie Realizing a Collection will be on view until April 30 A curator s gallery talk is scheduled for Thursday March 19 at 5 30 p m Lectures and concerts take place throughout the year Information regarding

  • Former Trustee Leon Brodeur Passes Away : Saint Anselm College
    and former member of Saint Anselm College s Board of Trustees died Jan 29 2015 at his home in Palm Springs Calif at age 87 A native of Manchester N H Brodeur served in the U S Army at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds from 1945 47 After graduating from Saint Anselm with a degree in chemistry in 1951 he worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co for 35 years During his time there he served as president chief operating officer and finally vice chair of the board of directors Saint Anselm College is very grateful for the affection Mr Brodeur had for the College for his support and for his service on the Board of Trustees We certainly will remember him fondly in our prayers said President Emeritus Father Jonathan DeFelice O S B An avid golfer until 2012 Brodeur held the third oldest membership at Firestone Country Club in Akron Also a horse lover he co owned racehorses with another former Firestone executive Brodeur was active in his home parish St Hilary s Church and helped with many charities in Akron Ohio He is survived by his wife of 58 years Helen their sons Ken and Steve daughter Michelle
