  • Boston Globe CEO Speaks at Corporate Partners Event : Saint Anselm College
    the industry has been whipsawed by hurricane force headwinds Content both news and editorial has been fragmented and published on new platforms In 2005 advertising sales were at an all time high Seven years later it had been cut in half There was further erosion in 2013 He also cited changes in readers habits Only five percent of people under age 35 prefer print as their primary news source But Sheehan is convinced that great journalism brings people together convenes community and holds politicians accountable There is value in insightful accountable journalism and in photos that are not taken but made He cited The Boston Globe s 23 Pulitzer Prizes including three in the past six years for arts criticism and the paper s first for breaking news which was awarded last April for its exhaustive coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and the ensuing manhunt The only way to grow a business is to invest in it Sheehan said and The Boston Globe is investing in quality journalism by adding sections that focus on areas such as politics and real estate a weekly poll and a section on all things Catholic He described such investment as part of the classic business cycle The better your journalism is the more you attract business You then pour that back into the newsroom It s important to keep coming up with ideas said the CEO who spent 30 years generating ideas in the advertising industry For example the paper has begun distribution in southwestern Florida to keep snowbirds subscribing Sheehan also discussed developing One Fund Boston which collected and distributed 61 million in its first 75 days to support victims of the marathon bombing and is about to distribute a second round It was the fastest and most successful victim compensation fund

  • Professor Cronin Receives Teaching Excellence Award : Saint Anselm College
    09 2014 Laurie Morrissey Communications and Marketing 603 641 7240 Meoghan Cronin professor of English is this year s recipient of the AAUP Award for Excellence in Faculty Accomplishment Beth Salerno president of the college s chapter of the American Association of University Professors presented her with the award during the college s commencement exercises on May 17 Cronin joined the faculty in 1993 having earned a doctorate in English literature at the University of Delaware She specializes in teaching romantic and Victorian literature Cronin served four terms on the Faculty Senate and participated on numerous committees She has served as coordinator of freshman composition interim director of the Abbey Players and advisor for The Oxford Companions the student English club She is currently the director of college writing Students praise her careful help with their writing in freshman English and her textual analysis in upper level English courses Salerno said also citing Cronin s founding of the annual Mind over Major conference and her support of SOAR Showcasing Our Arts and Research She is remembered by many students for her humanities lectures on Darwin and Virginia Woolf In addition Salerno said the professor is well known among her colleagues

  • Students Develop Research Skills Through Summer Grant : Saint Anselm College
    Research Excellence program The grant aims to increase biomedical research within the state supporting faculty projects and training future scientists Students in majors such as biology nursing psychology and computer science are developing their research skills They are trained on techniques terminology and library resources working alongside their faculty mentors and asking questions as they go They also enhance life skills including oral and written communication analytical inquiry self reliance and self confidence Working on the grant funded research project is kind of like a dream come true says biology major McKay A lot of medical schools encourage students to get involved in research so this is a great opportunity His lab partner a 2014 graduate has lab experience as he is in his second year on the project Elizabeth Greguske assistant professor of biology and faculty mentor is always available when they have questions Research in the Field or Pond While the projects are lab based some of the students had a chance to go outside and get their feet wet Specifically they went fishing Once Bristol and Fandunyan got their 55 gallon tanks set up they went to a local pond to fill them Back at the lab they clipped fins so they could do genetic analysis on the tissue samples Their work is directed by Professor Lori LaPlante whose research is on how immune function relates to mate choice Although most of the projects are based in the Goulet Science Center on campus one student biochemistry major Ben Berube 15 is conducting medical research at Dartmouth College Two nursing majors Aimee LaLancette 15 and John Sullivan 15 are involved in clinical research at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Research through NH INBRE INBRE s goals create a partnership that benefits students first and foremost says Derk Wierda Saint
