    Gary Bouchard and Landis Magnuson at the first celebration Saint Anselm College Home Page News Shakespeare Day 2014 Main Content College Celebrates Shakespeare s 450th Birthday April 22 2014 Laura Lemire College Communications and Marketing 603 641 7240 Saint Anselm College will celebrate William Shakespeare s 450th birthday on April 23 with a day of sonnet reading performing scenes from his plays and birthday cake The 26th annual celebration brings together more than 150 faculty staff students community members and returning alumni to recite the bard s most famous works In addition to new sonnet readers from the class of 2017 Fr John Fortin O S B and business office staff member Carol Vachon will recite for their 26th year in a row Steven Wilbar 78 is driving from the University of Maine to read a sonnet while the farthest read sonnet is recited by Kathleen Nee Baxter 81 calling from Kodiak Alaska English department professor Gary Bouchard began the tradition on April 25 1989 with 75 Saint Anselm community members participating This year the celebration will take place in Cushing Center from 10 a m to 4 p m Learn more about the tradition at www anselm edu shakespeare

  • English Major Selected for 2014 Gordon Fellowship : Saint Anselm College
    Sandford an English major communication minor has been chosen as the 2014 Albert J Gordon Summer Research Fellow Sandford starting May 19 will spend his summer completing research at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics Political Library on the correlation between Albert Camus The Plague and the current Siege of Homs in Syria Sandford hopes his research will raise awareness of the uprising and war crimes occurring in Syria The AAC the Institute s Academic Advisory Committee was most impressed with the bold vision of Ryan s proposal said history professor Andrew Moore His attempt to link the philosophical and literary work of Albert Camus with current events is exactly the sort of interdisciplinary thinking that a liberal arts education should encourage The fellowship is designed to offer an opportunity for an outstanding student or recent alumnus to gain experience that will assist him or her in career pursuits related to public policy and public affairs including gaining admission to graduate and professional schools The fellowship program is made possible through a generous gift by the late Mr Albert J Gordon of New York City a former principal in the investment banking firm of Kidder Peabody now UBS Financial In

  • Psychology Students Attend Eastern Conference : Saint Anselm College
    Eastern Conference April 11 2014 Communications and Marketing 603 641 7240 Five Saint Anselm students and three professors attended the 85 th Annual Meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association Professors students and professional psychologists met to present and discuss their research in the field of psychology It is always great to expose psychology students to a conference said Loretta Brady associate professor It is a culmination of their studies and a time for the students to adapt what they have studied into a real world setting Stephanie Kearsley 14 presented a poster depicting the guilt and pride associated with littering on campus and how the manipulation of these two emotions could have a positive impact on the amount of trash Marie Schwab 14 and professors Kathleen Flannery and Adam Wenzel displayed research on the effect of fluorescent lights on academic performance Vivian Fitzgerald 14 pictured right explored the different non verbal communication styles of athlete and non athlete women Her poster was ranked eighth place out of 100 presented in a research contest at the conference Kasey Elaine Mammola 14 studied the people s food choices based on advertising and Alicia Argero Triantos 14 utilized the MyFitnessPal mobile app to

  • Economics Students Explore Wall Street : Saint Anselm College
    7240 Ten economics and business students and two professors traveled to New York City recently visiting several locations in the nation s financial capital such as the New York Stock Exchange and the Federal Reserve It was really informative for the students said Jennifer Wells Kelber assistant professor It s one thing for the students to sit and listen to either me or Professor Miller in lecture and another for them to go out and see the application of what they have been learning Students also had the opportunity to network with Saint Anselm alumni working in Manhattan s Financial District Several are employed in large firms such as Bloomberg and Scotia Capital giving the students insight into both the hiring process and the inner workings of some of the most well known finance companies in the nation Financial analyst Kevin Tynan 90 participated in the meet and greet between students and alumni and shared his experience working with Bloomberg Paul Stamoulis 93 at Scotia Capital provided advice on investment banking Stamoulis later gave the students a tour of the trading rooms For Dao Le 15 connecting with alumni was a highlight There were eight or nine alumni there who

  • English Major Receives Fulbright Award : Saint Anselm College
    s major cities where she can reach a population that does not traditionally have access to English speakers or individuals from the U S In addition to teaching she may give presentations on the United States culture society and history lead language labs tutor and participate in local activities and events Jordan s interest in the Fulbright opportunity stemmed from her travels studying in Germany and Scotland Her time abroad gave her a deep appreciation for other cultures During a stay in Germany she had a particularly inspiring experience assisting an English class which inspired her to apply for the Fulbright I assisted several classes and honestly it was one of the greatest experiences of my life I want to give back to the country that helped excel in my own education said Jordan As an on campus tutor and a licensed substitute teacher Jordan has experience teaching and assisting students in learning a language After pursuing languages for nearly six years I understand how complicated and frustrating learning a language can be she said She hopes to use her skills and knowledge to help German adults learn English as well as gather their own impressions of a foreigner Jordan has also been accepted into the University of Connecticut s comparative literature program to earn her master s and doctorate degrees Upon completing her Fulbright award she will continue her education focusing on war and literature in Germany during the early twentieth century She hopes to become a college professor She recently received the Honorary Conley Scholarship from the English department and is editor of the college s literary publication The Quatrain Jordan was one of 395 applicants to the 2014 2015 Fulbright ETA program in Germany in which only 140 grants were given The Fulbright Program offers a variety

  • College Sponsors Concert for Professor’s Son, Young Cancer Patient : Saint Anselm College
    communication professor Jonathan Lupo three year old cancer patient Henry Archibald Lupo in the Dana Center at 7 30 p m Sponsored by the English department the benefit will raise money to help the family offset the costs associated with treating the child s cancer In lieu of tickets suggested donations are 5 for students and 15 for adults Archibald Lupo was diagnosed with sarcoma in January and is being treated at Boston Children s Hospital The benefit includes a concert silent auction and bake sale Saint Anselm College junior English major Ryan Sandford is the opening act Other bands to perform include The Joshua Incident Davis and Deleault and the Gleason Brown Jazz Quintet all of which are comprised of members of the college community including English professors Ann Norton and Ed Gleason and Dana Center staff member Joe Deleault Silent auction items include a signed Bruins puck tickets to a Manchester Monarchs game day passes to Vertical Dreams and gift certificates to local businesses The Dana Center s Koonz Theatre doors open at 7 p m For more information about the concert or to make a donation contact English professor Landis Magnuson at lmagnuso anselm edu or at

    artwork and research across disciplines Saint Anselm College Home Page News SOAR 2014 Main Content Month Long Series Highlights Humanities and Sciences April 08 2014 Laurie Morrissey Communications and Marketing 603 641 7240 Saint Anselm students are writing performing studying researching and creating The results of their work include thesis papers paintings posters and more all of which are on display this month as part of SOAR a celebration of student achievement Nearly 200 students from 29 majors are recognized for their hard work through SOAR The purpose of the annual month long event is to foster excellence in undergraduate scholarship creative work and research in the sciences social sciences and humanities according to biology professor Daniel Broek a member of the SOAR committee Three distinguished speakers are part of the event and many alumni are returning to campus to participate in panels and presentations related to their current work Cameron P Wake of the University of New Hampshire s Sustainability Institute and its Institute for the Study of Earth Oceans and Space is one of this year s science speakers He will discuss climate change in New England on Thursday April 8 at 4 p m in Perini Lecture
