    person s life Through ethnography writers or reporters tell a story after sometimes spending years with their subjects Instead of one or two interviews before writing a story the interviewer develops a relationship that allows for the exchange of in depth and personal stories Patti said This form of experiential learning allows students to see the evolution of storytelling creating friendships through interviews that lead to a deeper understanding of people s stories he said Patti has used ethnographic methods to explore how people cope with the realities of life by telling the stories of people who are at the end of their lives including holocaust survivors and cancer patients I have always found the opposite of what people might expect Patti said Rather than being sad or depressing their stories show the miracle of what it is to be alive and bring back the wider perspective of what it means to be a human being living with limited time on earth Meet more faculty Apply Visit Info Program Communication Studies BS The Communication Studies BS degree prepares students to enter many professions by teaching theories and practical applications of interpersonal communication small group communication public speaking nonverbal communication and

    also working on a double minor in marketing and photography has worked for four organizations including Michael s Jewelry in North Wilkesboro Merlefest in Wilkesboro and University Recreation and The Appalachian student newspaper These jobs have allowed me to be creative using the Adobe Creative Suite outside of class I often find myself applying the techniques I ve learned outside of class to create things in class and also using the knowledge I ve gained in classes to design effective advertisements for my other jobs she said Last summer Canter also had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy with the Commercial Photography program for three weeks where she said she was able to fully immerse herself in the Italian culture After graduation she is interested in seeking a position as a project manager position at an advertising agency She says that her education at Appalachian has prepared her for this career because of her well rounded education that has allowed her to understand all aspects of advertising campaigns What advice does she have for prospective students interested in Advertising Canter recommends reaching out to Department of Communication faculty to talk about the program and possibilities for careers in the field As the Advertising Club s newly elected president Canter encourages people to join the organization because of the valuable connections members make with employers as well as discussions of current advertising trends and experience working in teams to come up with creative business solutions Madison Canter wants to work as a project manager at an advertising agency after finishing her Communication Advertising BS degree Apply Visit Info Program Communication Advertising BS Communication Advertising BS degree at Appalachian State University teaches both the creative and business aspects of the advertising profession It prepares students for careers in advertising agencies media

    a national competition for an organization known as WorldSkills a foundation dedicated to showcasing skills While in college Parker was asked back to utilize her graphic design expertise in an international WorldSkills competition that put her on a team with other talented students from around the world She acted as communication director for the team that would take first place in a Water Innovation Challenge in Singapore The clean water system Parker and her team developed is now in the process of being tested in Bangladesh Parker s talents found a nurturing environment at Appalachian Jean DeHart my advisor put me on the right track Parker said Now the chair of the Department of Communication DeHart helped Parker in her search for an internship and Parker eventually landed a coveted spot with Disney as a tour guide at the Hollywood Studios Movie Ride Now working her second internship with Disney Parker is flourishing outside of school hoping to use her internships as a stepping stone towards a career in graphic design in advertising Parker looks back on her time at Appalachian fondly citing the invaluable skills she picked up Appalachian helped me to present myself professionally I got a lot of networking opportunities Parker said of the university s contribution to her success It opened a lot of doors for me and helped me grow Appalachian opened a lot of doors for me and helped me grow Sarah Parker 14 Apply Visit Info Program Communication Advertising BS Communication Advertising BS degree at Appalachian State University teaches both the creative and business aspects of the advertising profession It prepares students for careers in advertising agencies media marketing or in house advertising departments of non profit or political organizations Department Department of Communication The Department of Communication offers degrees in Communication Studies

    resume sends a powerful message to any prospective employer After graduating Carter began working at WBTV in Charlotte His career grew there until he left to form his own video production business and opened a comic book shop He also became involved in politics and was elected to the North Carolina Senate Carter then returned to WBTV and now anchors the WBTV News Morning Show and WBTV News at Noon Carter said that because of his education in the communications program he was able to hit the ground running after graduation The program also helped him focus on what he wanted to do after he left It gave me the basic tools I needed and a broad understanding of what it was like to work in the broadcasting field Carter said Every television station has its own way of doing things but there are the basics that apply to every station and my studies at Appalachian helped me be prepared to do those basics Carter said the one piece of advice he could give to current broadcasting students is to get a leg up on the competition Getting an internship at a station may be the single most important thing that anyone can do as far as being able to get a job in the industry Carter said The experience and contacts you make in an internship are invaluable John Carter works for WBTV in Charlotte anchoring the morning and noon news shows Apply Visit Info Program Communication Electronic Media Broadcasting BS Communication Electronic Media Broadcasting BS develops the skills needed for career success in any aspect of broadcasting from sales programming to writing for commercials or news Department Department of Communication The Department of Communication offers degrees in Communication Studies Electronic Media Broadcasting Advertising Journalism and Public Relations College

    still thinking about careers in a print newsroom Holman said When I was hired my job was to bring in a multiple media aspect of storytelling Since then Holman has developed new curricula for two classes she teaches Multimedia Storytelling and Journalism Ethics in a Free Society She has also developed and teaches classes from her own expertise and experience Photojournalism Layout and Design for Print and Interactive Media and Internet Communication Holman also belongs to a Faculty Learning Community that was created to investigate how to apply Universal Design for Learning UDL principles to teaching UDL classes are designed to reach individuals with different types of learning styles through multiple means of representation action and expression and multiple means of engagement She utilizes these concepts when developing and fine tuning her journalism classes The point is to push the envelope and create an engaged classroom environment Holman said I spend a lot of time working on and developing classes that I would want to take that the students need and are interesting I make it so that it s accessible and reaches all students Researching and writing about health communication however is something that is also very important to Holman whose research focuses on media portrayals of health and mental illness My interest is in media effects and so I m always talking about how a story is reported Holman said I try to bring that awareness into the classroom how you write and how you present stories can have an impact on readers Meet more faculty Apply Visit Info Program Communication Journalism BS The Communication Journalism BS degree teaches students how to find and gather information from primary sources communicate that information to a specific audience through multi media storytelling and be a watchdog for the public as
