    This isn t a cut throat school You have opportunities and you have auditions but the real thing you re competing against is yourself You become better as a person and a dancer Pollock said she values the program s emphasis on care for the body and integration of body mind and spirit Taking advantage of the Somatics based courses and equipment she is getting certified as a Pilates instructor By the end of her junior year she had been in 12 productions either as a dancer choreographer or actor She is active in Momentum the student dance club Since students majoring in any discipline can audition for campus productions Pollock was one of two students who alternated the playing the lead role in the Department of Theatre and Dance s Spring 2015 production of The Diary of Anne Frank The Dance Studies Program requires a minor or a second major in an area of interest because the faculty believes connections can be made between dance and any other discipline Pollock chose Psychology because the field helps you understand other people and yourself better She works as a research assistant for Dr Denise Martz on topics such as body image and fat talk among college women She describes the faculty at Appalachian as nurturing and fostering of an open environment I feel like I can talk to them about anything she said Pollock performs in an Appalachian Dance Ensemble production inside Valborg Theatre Photo credit Greg Williams Since non theatre majors can audition for campus productions Pollock was one of two students who alternated playing the lead role in the Department of Theatre and Dance s Spring 2015 production of The Diary of Anne Frank Photo credit Morgan Stewart Apply Visit Info Program Dance Studies BA This degree takes an

    I wish to express she said Why should a student interested in Dance Studies choose Appalachian I think if a student is interested in a dance education that leaves room for other creative and scholarly endeavors this is a great place to go I think if a student wants opportunities to work collaboratively with other students and explore their own ideas through melding art and scholarship App is a wonderful place If a student has any interest in somatic work looking at the connection between mind and body this is a great place to go What do you love most about teaching dance Appalachian students I love that students at Appalachian are coming from a whole host of different disciplines Very few of our students do dance only I have the pleasure of teaching biologists political scientists journalists historians architects and the list goes on Each student brings their unique perspective to the artistic process and I believe it makes the art all the more rich I think art works best when it can be seen through multiple lenses My teaching style is very collaborative I don t pretend to hold the answers to everything and I love seeing my students discover new things as well as discovering things along with them I learn so much in the classroom Meet more faculty Apply Visit Info Program Dance Studies BA This degree takes an integrative cross disciplinary approach in which students make connections among disciplines and ultimately experience dance on a deeper and more multidimensional level Department Department of Theatre and Dance The department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and the National Association of Schools of Dance Ninety one percent of its graduates in the past five years are employed or in graduate or professional study

    sharing with students what she and her colleagues learn about foreign exchange markets and how monetary policy affects them Molodtsova who was born and raised in Ukraine earned a Ph D from the University of Houston So sometimes her personal experiences inform what she teaches students For example when she was in high school she lived through the rampant inflation that ravaged her native country in the 1990s I saw how it affected regular people and I talk to my students about that she said When inflation is too high prices increase daily Whenever people get their paychecks they immediately go out and spend them They need to spend money immediately because tomorrow everything will cost more Molodtsova said that Appalachian s Department of Economics offers a lot in addition to an international faculty six other professors are from foreign countries She encourages students to get involved in the Economics Club through which participants visit Wall Street learn more about how public policy affects the economy and collect economic data on the Greater Boone area She also likes helping students with papers that are entered into the annual Brashear Prize competition which promotes economics research among Appalachian s undergraduates Dr Tanya Molodtsova has taught in the Department of Economics since 2013 Apply Visit Info Program Economics BA International Economics The Economics BA International Economics degree is a liberal arts focused degree designed for students who want careers in the field of economics overseas perhaps in governmental or non profit sectors Department Department of Economics The Department of Economics offers diverse courses that cover standard fields such as micro and macro theory labor public finance regional and development economics The department is particularly strong in the areas of environmental and experimental economics It offers the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

    classroom he said especially teaching the importance of meeting the needs of all his students As a kindergarten teacher this meant that I had to work to educate the whole child meeting academic and social needs This was a responsibility that I took very seriously If a child s kindergarten experience was a bad one they would have a long educational career ahead of them Appalachian equipped me with many instructional strategies that I was able to use in my classroom to meet my students needs Why should prospective students choose Appalachian Students who are interested in elementary education should choose Appalachian because of the high quality education they will receive The professors at Appalachian certainly work to provide students with a balance of content knowledge and instructional practices that can be used to teach this content Bettis said They also model the importance of building relationships with students and their families Finally they work to provide meaningful experiences for students that will help prepare teachers to be effective once they walk into their own classroom I cannot say enough about the preparation that I was given as a pre service educator This foundation is what helped prepare me for a successful career in education Brian Bettis Boiling Springs Elementary School s 2008 Teacher of the Year A satisfied graduate Brian Bettis has returned three times to continue the Appalachian experience earning a master s degree in elementary education in 2008 a graduate certificate in school leadership in 2015 and starting the online Ed S program in educational administration In addition to teaching in Cleveland County Schools he has served as an adjunct professor at UNC Charlotte Apply Visit Info Program Elementary Education BS Appalachian State University s Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education prepares students to teach in
