  • Appalachian State University / Faculty Profile: Dr. Michael Potter
    the American Bankers Association and later as a research analyst for the Joint Committee on Government and Finance for the West Virginia Legislature Potter received his Master of Public Administration degree as well as his Doctor of Philosophy Public Administration Public Affairs from Virginia Tech During the last few years of his doctoral education Potter began teaching in Appalachian s Department of Government and Justice Studies first as a visiting assistant professor and then in his current position as an assistant professor Potter said his classes often include debate and conversation surrounding topics discussed in lectures and readings as he wants students to push their thinking on a subject I m hoping students will learn more than what it takes to get a good grade Potter said Potter teaches students who are interested in careers in the public sectors and others who want to be lawyers politicians and more One thing he hopes all of his students understand is the impact local government has on daily life We fixate on the federal government when it has less of an impact Potter said The state and local levels of government are where citizens interact with government the most So for the students who are pursuing a career in the public sector Potter stresses how much they can do for society just by making changes in state and local government I want students to know the importance of public service Potter said It is a calling You have to make conscious decisions and sometimes sacrifices but it is so important Apply Visit Info Program Political Science BS Public Administration The Political Science BS Public Administration degree develops an understanding of local and state government administration Students are required to complete one of two tracks public management or town city and county management

    that local government was a topic that excited him Now Studnicky is in the Political Science BS Public Administration degree track He hopes to continue his education at Appalachian beyond his undergraduate degree with the department s accelerated admissions master s program and receive his Master of Public Administration Studnicky further realized his career goals after interning with the town manager of Apex North Carolina And hearing Potter talk about different positions in local government also helped him learn more about the different options a public servant has His main goal is to become a town manager or head of a department He wants a position where he can focus on more than one topic at once constantly learning and solving new problems In the meantime Studnicky is gaining leadership experience as a residence assistant in Eggers Residence Hall and a member of the Student Government Association He hopes other students will realize the potential in public administration To Studnicky public administration provides a student with many possibilities because of the variety of jobs to be found in the public sector One of the reasons he loves public administration is because he sees it as a combination of business and politics Studnicky s advice to incoming students It s not high school The first semester is hard and you have to work as hard as or harder than you did back then But like he said an education in public administration is something to be excited about Apply Visit Info Program Political Science BS Public Administration The Political Science BS Public Administration degree develops an understanding of local and state government administration Students are required to complete one of two tracks public management or town city and county management Department Department of Government and Justice Studies The Department of Government

    faculty who really care about their students In addition to his studies Warren is busy as a campus leader He is vice president of the Appalachian Student Ambassadors who serve as student representatives for the Office of Admissions the Alumni Association and the Office of the Chancellor He is also a founding member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and plays on the Men s Club Volleyball team Warren also is involved with Scholars with Diverse Abilities SDAP an innovative campus program that provides students with intellectual disabilities access to a two year college education Volunteers like Warren tutor the SDAP scholars and help them attend class participate in recreational activities and go to social events I learned so much from interacting with students I have taken classes in human growth and development and can apply so much material from that class in daily interactions Warren said As part of the Ambassador program Warren and three other Appalachian campus leaders traveled to South Africa in the summer of 2015 to participate in University of the Free State s Global Leadership Summit Appalachian was among 13 colleges and universities in six countries to send students to the two week event focused around themes of transformational leadership citizenship social justice complex societies and sustainability While there Warren said he also observed the disparity that can occur in relation to health care This only made me more passionate about eventually entering the health care profession he said Lukas Warren is a member of the Appalachian Student Ambassadors who give campus tours to prospective students among other responsibilities as representatives of the university Apply Visit Info Program Psychology BS Health Studies The Psychology BS Health Studies degree combines classes in psychology biology and exercise science and is ideal for students wanting to pursue a career

    all aspects of research but I want to help them realize that research can be creative and fun One of her most recent research projects was inspired by a stand up comedian who joked about the cliché story of a woman asking her significant other Does this make me look fat I took that stand up and said the problem is not the response the problem is that she asked the question Martz said This led to a pilot study with a student that looked at men s responses to women who fat talk that is talking down about their bodies The study found that when college men overheard a woman fat talking with her friends they thought she had poor mental and physical health Martz along with a group of students also conducted research on the outcomes of teen intimate partner violence in rural areas It is important Martz said to study the affects of teen intimate partner violence because surviving violence as a teen negatively affects a woman s life trajectory She has also devoted research to the study of anorexia nervosa the deadliest psychological disorder in order to contribute to the resources available to help treat it Martz said her motivation to conduct research on topics of women s health comes from many factors including an increase of women working in clinical psychology and the medical profession Meet more faculty Dr Denise Martz teaches in the Department of Psychology Her research on body image and fat talk has received national media attention Apply Visit Info Program Psychology BS Health Studies The Psychology BS Health Studies degree combines classes in psychology biology and exercise science and is ideal for students wanting to pursue a career in a health related field Department Department of Psychology The Department of Psychology

    we learned to think critically produced quality research products and participated in unique clinical opportunities Smith said Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology Health Studies and began Appalachian s Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology program excited to spend more time in Boone and work toward her career in clinical health psychology But not all her time was spent in Boone Smith completed her master s program internship at the Duke Pediatric Neuropsychology Clinic in Durham Smith jokes that her other major at Appalachian was Outdoor Programs an office on campus that gives students opportunities to explore the outdoors through equipment rental and organized trips She was a trip leader all four years as an undergraduate and then worked with OP every once and a while as a graduate student Having the opportunities to work in a variety of settings and even careers helped build my skills to be highly flexible when working with a wide variety of personalities and within various working environments Smith said about Appalachian So when she decided to pursue the clinical psychology doctoral program at East Tennessee State University Smith said she felt more than ready Smith hopes to finish her doctoral program by summer 2017 After that she wants to work as a behavioral health consultant within a pediatric primary care clinic She also plans to continue her involvement in research Your emotional well being directly impacts your physical health Smith said I find that fascinating and want to be involved in helping individuals manage their emotions and behaviors to become physically and emotionally healthy Apply Visit Info Program Psychology BS Health Studies The Psychology BS Health Studies degree combines classes in psychology biology and exercise science and is ideal for students wanting to pursue a career in a health related

    Cairelli chose to pursue a degree in psychology with the help of Appalachian s Career Exploration Office a resource for students who need help choosing what major fits them best She realized that she enjoyed learning about every aspect of psychology and that she wanted to become a counselor after graduation The Department of Psychology faculty have helped her prepare for these post graduations plans Cairelli said Faculty are there to answer questions share their experience as counselors and mentor and advise students Cairelli has participated in multiple research opportunities with psychology faculty including small social experiments for her social psychology class and a pilot study for an honors course By participating in research and working with experiment participants Cairelli said her eyes were opened to the level of work and responsibility that psychologists as researchers face It s made me more excited to learn and try new things and to answer questions in a more efficient way Cairelli said Cairelli is gaining a global perspective fall 2015 semester while she studies psychology at Keele University in the United Kingdom the department s signature study abroad opportunity The best part thus far has been the opportunity to meet other students and work with the department s study abroad faculty supervisor Dr Will Canu Allie Cairelli plans to use her psychology degree to become a counselor Apply Visit Info Program Psychology BS Human Services The Psychology BS Human Services degree is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in a helping profession or graduate school programs in social work or counseling Department Department of Psychology The Department of Psychology promotes understanding of the science of psychology It seeks to prepare undergraduate students with transferable skills and knowledge of the discipline of psychology and train graduate students as professionals in the
