    his best life decisions After arriving at Appalachian Hilton selected to pursue more specifically the Psychology BS Human Services degree I was interested in the direct contact side of human services Hilton said I was interested in helping children and adolescents with psychological and behavioral difficulties so the human services side fit After completing his bachelor s degree in 2011 Hilton continued his Appalachian education with the master s in clinical health psychology which he finished in 2014 Now Hilton is a full time doctoral student at the University of Alabama studying clinical child psychology My experiences in Appalachian s master s program was what made continuing toward my Ph D possible Hilton said I came out of Appalachian s program very competitive in a highly competitive market and a great deal of that was the training and experiences I got while in the Department of Psychology Specifically Hilton said that the experiences students gain when they work with faculty and graduate students in a research lab gives them a leg up in any job or academic market Without the close mentorship of the faculty in the psychology department and the incredible experiences the department offers I would not have been able to pursue my goal of becoming a licensed psychologist Hilton said Dane Hilton is now a doctoral student at University of Alabama studying clinical child psychology Apply Visit Info Program Psychology BS Human Services The Psychology BS Human Services degree is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in a helping profession or graduate school programs in social work or counseling Department Department of Psychology The Department of Psychology promotes understanding of the science of psychology It seeks to prepare undergraduate students with transferable skills and knowledge of the discipline of psychology and train graduate students as

    by students for independent studies or honors theses During any given semester students help collect and enter data raise new research questions design studies or create posters for research presentations Wingrove said In my experience many students enter the psychology major with very little understanding of the important role that research has to play in the field and the impact that this research has on the world around them Wingrove said Many of them also hear the word research and think it must be a dry or boring process My goal is to give students experiences that demonstrate how meaningful engagement in research can be Students in her lab have studied perceptions of teacher student relationships aging and obesity discrimination in the legal system and digital piracy among college students Wingrove was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for a research project that expands on her previous work on foster children She is looking at how children evaluate fairness in their interactions with the system and system authorities In that study Wingrove recruited children without any experience with the legal system and asked them to evaluate different scenarios where authority figures treat children in different ways Wingrove said Her research relates back to why she decided to pursue a career in psychology After college Wingrove took a job at West Virginia University and volunteered her time at Court Appointed Special Advocates where volunteers represent children who are in the child protection system through the legal process She observed attended court hearings became interested in how the legal system treats children and decided to pursue that further in her graduate studies I knew I didn t necessarily want to practice law but I wanted to learn a lot about it so I sought out psychology programs that also had a legal

    Reynolds said Now that I m more into the program I study the major because religion is a huge part of so many people s lives I find it incredibly interesting to learn how different people carry out their spirituality Reynolds is the president of Collegiate Undergraduates Learning Things about Religion She said the club has helped her form a network of peers interested in religion and strengthened her relationships with faculty and staff in the Department of Philosophy and Religion Reynolds also participated in Appalachian s Alternative Service Experience where she spent her 2015 spring break performing community service in Puerto Rico Part of the experience includes pre trip meetings where students learn about the issues facing the place they will visit Reynolds team discussed environmental political and human rights issues specifically Being in Puerto Rico after learning so much about it was amazing Reynolds said It allowed me to see certain systems working in action and it allowed me to be an informed conversationalist Reynolds and her group re graveled a road dug drainage systems continued to learn about the area and experienced the culture during their visit she said Going on that program is definitely one of my favorite memories and I d recommend it to anyone who has the chance to go Reynolds said Reynolds suggests other students put themselves out there and get involved For me making friends was very hard but it got much better once I made myself get involved with organizations and found new hobbies she said At Appalachian student can choose from more than 300 clubs and organizations on campus Apply Visit Info Program Religious Studies BA The Religious Studies BA degree typically prepares students for careers as religious leaders or employees of religious affiliated organizations Department Department of Philosophy and
