  • The Goddess's Tiger: Tīpu Sultān and transcommunal kingship in early modern Mysore | ASU Events
    Mysore Religious Studies Forum Wednesday Sept 24 12 1 30 pm This event is sponsored by Historical Philosophical and Religious Studies Location Coor Hall 4403 Campus Tempe Cost Free and open to the public In this talk Dr Caleb Simmons University of Arizona will examine the ritual practice of kingship during the reign of Tīpu Sultān the Muslim ruler of Mysore during the late 18th century CE Specifically he will highlight the ruler s patronage of goddess rituals that would most often be described as Hindu arguing that these rituals were part of a larger ritual complex in which kings operated that transcended the boundaries of religious tradition In doing so Dr Simmons will offer an alternative view on the position of communalism during the reign of Tīpu Sultān and religion in pre colonial India more broadly Bio Caleb Simmons is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Arizona His current book project titled The Goddess and the King examines the development of devotion to the goddess Cāmuṇḍi in the genealogical materials of the Woḍeyar kingdom of Mysore His other research interests include Hinduism in popular culture and religion and comic books For more information E mail
