    universities in the future The six month design based program focuses on bringing ideas to practice linking theory to relevant applications and scaling innovations in teaching and learning leadership finance and technology that can transform higher education institutions today and in the future Curriculum Curriculum Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 Change Leadership for the Innovative Institution Change in any industry is difficult but it is particularly problematic in higher education with its unique culture and history of shared governance This module examines the opportunities and challenges presented by change considers best practices for change management explores how to reshape organizational culture and examines how to mobilize individuals and alliances to advance change Creating Innovations Faced with tightening government subsidies challenging demographics and stagnant family income the current financial model for many colleges and universities is no longer sustainable The dominant teaching and learning model of higher education is rooted in an industrial age that favored a rigid system The 21st century economy demands a more flexible system focused on innovation and creativity and delivered throughout a lifetime This module explores the innovative concepts and alternative models used by higher education institutions and allows students to design their own models

    transformation of 21st century higher education institutions The leadership component of the program is designed to support students in learning these new skills and behaviors and integrating them into every day practice transforming themselves and the people around them Leadership Coaching is a personal development process and a form of one on one purposeful and strategic conversation between the fellow and an Academy coach Academy coaches serve as strategic partners who offer encouragement support honest feedback and provocative questions to bring about clarity and new possibilities for fellows In addition to one on one coaching Academy fellows meet in smaller groups called Learning Circles Learning Circles create another level of a learning community in which fellows can deepen their understanding of classroom concepts Within the Learning Circle fellows use an action learning and peer coaching model to support one another in looking at their leadership behaviors around specific and real challenges within their home institutions Using the model fellows reflect on current practices expand refine and build new skills share ideas teach one another and solve problems Within the Learning Circle fellows learn a method for analyzing challenges a new way of supporting colleague leaders in solving challenges and alternative paths for taking action How does the Academy differ from other higher education executive programs Rather than emphasize the tactical day to day aspects of leading today s institutions the Academy is centered exclusively on innovative ideas across a range of challenges facing higher education now and in the near future Students learn the critical thinking analysis and design skills needed to solve the complex issues facing higher education The principles of design are embedded into the program allowing students to participate in exercises that help develop the next generation governance structures credentials and financial models The program focuses on bringing ideas to practice linking theory to relevant applications and scaling innovations in teaching and learning leadership finance and technology that can transform higher education institutions today and in the future What is the format of the program The program is offered in an executive style education schedule combining three intensive face to face meetings in Washington D C and Phoenix with online seminars and executive coaching sessions throughout the program What are the dates of the residential modules in 2016 Module 1 June 27 30 2016 Georgetown University Washington D C Module 2 September 12 15 2016 Arizona State University Tempe AZ Module 3 November 7 10 2016 Georgetown University Washington DC Dates subject to change Who are the faculty teaching in the Academy At the foundation of the Academy is the expertise of two leading institutions ASU s innovative model for the next generation research university and Georgetown s mission to develop and sustain transformational leadership Directing the Academy is Jeffrey J Selingo a veteran higher education author journalist and former editor of The Chronicle of Higher Education The Academy sessions are a mix of case studies simulations and fireside chats with leading thinkers practitioners and presidents including
