  • Cal Poly Alumna’s Undergraduate Research Awarded Top Honor at Social Sciences Conference
    the state gathered to share social science related research on topics such as education and policy psychology and media and health and race ethnicity issues Vournas paper Mapping Motivations Nutrition in Transition in Fiji won the highest honor at the conference The paper documents her research findings collected in Fiji during summer 2014 The paper combines the study of people and cultures and GIS geographic information systems practices to explore how seven families in a rural Fijian village make food choices and what motivates their dietary preferences The results indicated that the families consumed no less than 52 percent of store bought food Social sciences Professor Dawn Neill who initiated the research expedition and leads the project noted that convenience was a greater motivating factor in dietary choices than maximizing energy Neill found that the project s tentative results move against the optimal foraging model in which humans make food choices that provide the most calories for the least amount of labor Instead Vournas s paper establishes convenience as a factor encouraging Fiji s transition from a rural to urban food economy In terms of the academic intellectual component we can actually see how people are making these transitional diet changes We are understanding how humans think in terms of our evolution and ecological knowledge Neill said Vournas an undergraduate during the Fiji trip enjoyed a rare opportunity of contributing to the project from inception Her work has helped introduce the project to the public and will likely set the groundwork for its continued collaboration of scholars and undergraduate students Vournas paper and 15 minute presentation was a distillation of her 100 page senior project and work about Fiji Links SSRIC http ssric org participate src Cal Poly Social Sciences Department http cla calpoly edu socs html Cal Poly College

  • Cal Poly History Professor Selected as Scholar at Institute for Advanced Study

    It s a great day for our graduates and their families who helped to make this accomplishment possible Armstrong said Employment opportunities for the Class of 2015 are among the best in years As our newest alumni begin their careers across the state and nation we know they will use the talents and intellect honed at Cal Poly to make the world a better place GoDaddy CEO and technology pioneer Blake Irving and KTTV anchor and Cal Poly alumna Laura Diaz will deliver keynote addresses Irving will address the colleges of Engineering and Architecture Environmental Design at 9 a m Saturday and Diaz will address the College of Liberal Arts and Orfalea College of Business at 9 a m Sunday The university will award an honorary doctorate degree to hotel owner and philanthropist Phyllis Madonna at 5 p m Saturday during the ceremony for Cal Poly s colleges of Agriculture Food Environmental Sciences and Science and Mathematics at the ceremony More than 40 000 visitors are expected to attend Cal Poly s 74th annual commencement ceremonies The commencement schedule is Saturday June 13 9 a m College of Engineering 999 eligible graduates College of Architecture and Environmental Design 296 eligible

  • Cal Poly Civil Engineering Student Chapter Wins International Award
    ASCE s committee on student activities selected Cal Poly through a rigorous review based on an annual report prepared by student officers This distinction is the civil engineering equivalent of the Academy Award said Dean Debra Larson It only goes to the best of the best and it reflects our Cal Poly chapter s extraordinary efforts achievements and leadership Faculty advisors were Garrett Hall and Eric Kasper Cal Poly s 100 page annual report summarized community service and professional activities completed in 2015 including a career fair that attracted 74 civil and environmental engineering companies and 500 attendees Activities reflected the club s goals of expanding its interactions with industry and increasing collaborations with other engineering clubs and universities through events projects competitions and community outreach Among the chapter s competitive teams the Cal Poly Steel Bridge team recently placed second in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition and the chapter s concrete canoe team will represent the Pacific Southwest region in the Concrete Canoe National Competition in June These achievements go to the roots of Learn by Doing said Ryan Smith chapter president We have such a large group and long history of devoted student members who invest their

  • Cal Poly Great Grads Highlight the Talent, Tenacity of the Class of 2015
    to Cal Poly than most of her architecture peers As a member of a religious minority in Iran many basic human rights were denied to her including the right to pursue a university education She left home family and friends in Tehran after high school seeking a California dream She transferred from Santa Monica College to Cal Poly in 2012 attracted by the program s reputation as one of the nation s best architecture and design schools The program doesn t have a specific style and it s very diverse said the 24 year old who aspires to be an impactful designer Cal Poly really lets you carve your own path Since her arrival she has excelled in her studies and become a positive force within her college and department She served as a member of the Architecture Department s Fifth Year Student Committee and was a driving force behind a recently created mentoring program between third year and first year students She also recently passed her test to become a U S citizen I had the highest graduating GPA in my entire college the College of Architecture and Environmental Design she said I also graduated with honors summa cum laude As a result Haghighi was honored as one of eight university wide Outstanding Seniors for Academic Excellence and was a member of the president s platform party at the commencement ceremony for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design and the College of Engineering The incredible friends I have made the amazing network of faculty and staff and their constant love and support throughout my time at Cal Poly has really helped me succeed and grow both as a person and a designer she said They have become my second family and have made Cal Poly my home away from home Following graduation Haghighi plans to travel throughout Southeast Asia and Australia before tackling graduate school Photo by Anya McInroy Photography Kou Xiong College of Liberal Arts Kou Xiong has focused his efforts on making the Cal Poly experience as deeply impactful for others as it has been for him For me Cal Poly has been about building connections that will last after graduation and making a positive impact on others said the comparative ethnic studies major His department recently gave him an award for Outstanding Contribution to Ethnic Studies for his work in creating two campus clubs the Hmong Student Association and the Comparative Ethnic Studies Student Association He also serves as a student assistant in Cal Poly s MultiCultural Center and has given several guest lectures on campus to discuss Hmong culture and Asian American identity Diversity social justice and making a positive change in his community are important ideals for Xiong a first generation college student from Fresno Calif After Cal Poly Xiong 23 will go to work with City Year Sacramento working with high school students in low income areas around the state capital to improve graduation rates and foster pursuit of higher education Alicia

    He will showcase the team s methodology in action with environmental and economic data regarding natural resource productivity access to basic services pollution ecosystem restoration and wealth inequality His team also built dashboard software to show key indicators to track the sustainability of a country s well being The key to the measurement exercise is executing a comparison between the opportunities open to present and future generations according to Zambrano Economic growth isn t always inclusive or sustainable he said Policies must therefore be implemented to ensure that the benefits are broadly shared within and across generations As the leading international organization for addressing environmental issues UNEP is well positioned to play a critical role for developing green economy indicators and for working with key partner organizations to forge policy consensus and promote implementation Zambrano was asked to join the UNEP initiative because of his work with the United Nations Development Programme where he helped create the Gender Inequality Index and redesign the Human Development Index and as a way to quantify some of the U N s most pressing objectives Zambrano was also honored with the Orfalea College of Business Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award He was nominated
