    University Jazz Bands Letter from the Director Department Chair Message Music Department Brochure Arab Music Ensemble Arab Music Ensemble The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble performs the art and popular music of a wide range of Arabic speaking societies as well as selected seminal pieces having widespread appeal in the larger region Members learn the underlying systems of melodic and metric modes as they perform a variety of composed genres and improvisational forms that include some of the oldest continuously performed art music traditions in the world Students may sing and or play traditional or adapted instruments e g oud violin qanun nay riqq daff darabukka tabla bass cello accordion guitar reed instruments and additional percussion The ensemble combines a choir and orchestra and members may have the opportunity to perform as a soloist or in a chamber group as well Performances include formal concerts at the end of the quarter in addition to optional shows on and off campus for special occasions Coordination with a wonderful ensemble of dancers adds greatly to the large formal concerts Vocalists and instrumentalists of all skill levels are welcome Previous experience is not required and participation is open to all students and community

    House and Carnegie Hall in New York City Both ensembles have openings for new members each year Come and join us Auditions Sign up sheets for auditions will be posted on the bulletin board just outside the Band Office room 214 A in the Davidson Music Center at the beginning of Cal Poly s Week of Welcome WOW Auditions will begin during WOW and continue through the first week of classes Auditions are designed to give the directors an opportunity to learn more about you on a personal basis as well as to determine how to make you a better performer Auditions are also used to decide which ensemble is best for you and to determine which chair position you will hold for the fall quarter Please visit the Wind Ensemble Wind Orchestra audition page for more detailed information There you will find audition repertoire a complete schedule information regarding the use of school instruments for auditions and a list of frequently asked questions Qualifications Some new students assume that qualifying for participation in a university concert band requires years of private instruction coming from a large high school band program and or a history of being in honor groups such as the All State Band Although there are many students who fall into one or more of these categories they are definitely not required for eligibility If you have been an active member of your high school and or college band you already have the basic skills necessary for membership So even if you have never performed an audition please feel comfortable scheduling your time with the directors They work hard to make the process relaxed and stress free for all new students Credit for participating Wind Orchestra MU 172 01 or MU 372 01 Rehearsals MW 7 10

    the group but share in the common goal of committing themselves wholly to the music The Cal Polyrhythms are known for their dynamic and thoughtful performances of some of the genre s most fascinating works The director of the ensemble is Dr John Astaire Brass Ensembles The members of the Brass Ensembles include Cal Poly students from a variety of majors Several groups comprise the ensembles including two brass quintets and a brass choir The Brass Ensembles perform concerts each quarter and are also featured on the annual A Night at the Mission Chamber Ensemble Concert String Ensembles Several string chamber groups are active each quarter through the String Ensembles program These groups involve students from many majors on campus and range from string trios quartets and quintets to chamber groups that also include piano or wind instruments These chamber ensembles perform on a yearly Evening of String Music recital as well as for school functions professional engagements and student recitals The String Ensembles are coordinated by Dr David Arrivée conductor of the Cal Poly Symphony Each group is coached by Dr Arrivée and periodically by other faculty and outside artists including Kathleen Lenski and Michael Nowak For more information on the String Ensembles contact Dr Arrivée Student Opera Theatre Participation and registration of singers and instrumentalists by audition and the recommendation of the conductor producer and musical directors Auditions for roles in the annual spring quarter productions are held the end of fall quarter The one act operas are double cast to allow maximum participation and are performed fully staged and directed in Cal Poly s Spanos Theatre with costumes and orchestra Operas recently performed include Mozart s The Impresario and Haydn s The Apothecary For more information contact the directors Jacalyn Kreitzer and Katherine Arthur Arab Music Ensemble
