  • Arab Music Ensemble letter - Music Department - Cal Poly
    Arab Music Ensemble As the department ethnomusicologist and director of the Arab Music Ensemble I invite you to join the ensemble to perform the art and popular music of a wide range of Arabic speaking societies and historically interconnected cultures Vocalists and instrumentalists of all skill levels are welcome Previous experience is not required and participation is open to all students and community members Performances include official concerts that conclude each quarter in addition to optional shows on and off campus for special occasions Coordination with an associated dance troupe is a regular part of concert programs The group also usually goes on an optional concert tour each year The Arab Music Ensemble combines a choir and orchestra There also are opportunities to perform as a soloist and in a chamber ensemble Members learn the systems of melodic and metric modes that underlie a variety of composed and improvisational forms that include some of the oldest continuously performed art music genres in the world Students may sing or play traditional or adapted instruments that include the oud violin qanun nay riqq daff darabukka tabla bass cello accordion guitar reed instruments and additional percussion The course number is MU 188 for

    Director Sound Design Program University Jazz Bands Letter from the Director Department Chair Message Music Department Brochure Choir Letter Letter to Students Interested in Choirs Dear New Cal Poly Student Welcome to Cal Poly As director of choral activities I want to congratulate you on being accepted to one of our nation s finest universities I know you will enjoy your time with us surrounded by other great students a vibrant faculty as well as living in a very beautiful part of California I am writing because I understand that you are interested in choral music Cal Poly has a very active choral program I encourage you to become involved The choral ensembles are open to all students on the campus Students from engineering architecture business math social sciences agriculture and all others are highly visible as members of our choirs Well over 80 of our members come from non music majors Please visit the Cal Poly Choirs website There you will find information about each choir and some general information regarding our yearly events If you would like more specific information regarding the Cal Poly Choral Program please don t hesitate to email me or call I will be

  • Symphony Letter - Music Department - Cal Poly
    quarter The majority of Symphony members are not music majors and simply want to make orchestral music a part of their life at Cal Poly find balance with their studies and make great friends Concerts Our repertoire includes everything from blockbuster orchestral works to music from the movies or video games and we collaborate regularly with guest soloists and other university ensembles For example highlights of our 2014 15 season included a performance of Tchaikovsky s Symphony No 5 a collaboration with professional vocalists in a semi staged performance of the Finale to Act I of Puccini s La Bohème and our second collaboration with Cal Poly s Orchesis dance group in repertoire including Jenkins Palladio Piazzolla s Oblivion and The James Bond Theme Tours The Symphony frequently embarks on tours within the state of California and we tour out of state approximately every four years This last year we toured to San Francisco performed for students at Lowell High School spent free time in the city and attended a fantastic concert of the San Francisco Symphony Our most recent out of state tour was in April 2012 when the Cal Poly Symphony traveled to Washington D C performing as the Showcase Concert of the Washington D C International Music Festival The concert which took place in the renowned Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was the culmination of this four day festival and the tour as a whole was a fantastic cultural and social experience for the entire Symphony We plan to embark on our very first international tour in June 2016 when we will travel to Central Europe and perform in such cities as Vienna and Prague Don t miss this unique opportunity Auditions Don t miss your chance to audition for a place in the Symphony this
