  • Bands Letter - Music Department - Cal Poly
    the Winter Spring Various Chamber Ensembles Jazz Combos Brass Choir Flute Choir Clarinet Ensemble Brass Quintets Woodwind Quintet Saxophone Quartet Percussion Ensembles The Mustang Marching Band was honored to perform in San Francisco in February for the Chinese New Year parade in 2014 and 2015 performing before an estimated one million people along the parade route The Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra performed throughout Ireland Scotland and England during the summer of 2013 Other recent performing tours by the Wind Ensemble include performances in the Disney Hall Los Angeles in 2010 Carnegie Hall in 2003 and central Europe in 2006 which included performances in Budapest Vienna Schladming Salzburg Munich and Prague The University Jazz Band No 1 recently played a swing dance in Sacramento with an invitation for a return engagement at any time and a performance at San Francisco s highest rated jazz club the Savanna The jazz bands have also performed on tour in Puerto Rico Brazil and China in the past several years Please be aware that only 10 20 of the members of the Cal Poly Bands are music majors Because of this our performing ensembles are carefully designed to be compatible with the heavy academic demands of students like you from other areas of the university With our very limited rehearsal schedules you will have ample time to participate Membership in the Cal Poly Band program will give you an escape from the books an opportunity for meaningful musical expression challenges that college students seek leadership creativity team work personal growth and the opportunity to experience the rewards and sense of pride that go along with outstanding achievement instant friends many for life Interview Audition New members are often worried about the interview and decide not to participate This is a big mistake The faculty makes every effort to accommodate anyone who would like to participate If you were a member of your high school band you are already an experienced musician and are ready to participate in a college band We do have a place for you in the university bands If you do not have an instrument we will provide one for you We also have lockers and practice rooms Wind Ensemble Wind Orchestra Please sign up for your interview and audition on the bulletin board just outside room 214 A in the Davidson Music Center during the Week of Welcome WOW or online by following the instructions located on the Wind Ensemble Wind Orchestra audition page Auditions are designed to give the directors an opportunity to learn more about you on a personal basis as well as to determine how to make you a better performer Auditions are also used to decide which ensemble is best for you and to determine which chair position you will hold for the fall quarter Additional information including audition repertoire schedule and a list of frequently asked questions can be found on the Wind Ensemble Wind Orchestra audition page Jazz Bands For information on the jazz

  • Mustang Marching Band - Music Department - Cal Poly
    01 Field Show Marching Skills Travel Each fall the Mustang Band travels to one away game This fall the trip will be to University of California Davis In the winter the Pep Band will attend the Big West Basketball Tournament and go on to support our teams in NCAA competition Auditions Generally speaking any student who performed throughout their high school band program has the skill needed to audition successfully for Mustang Band All prospective members may either submit an audition online or perform in person on selected dates For specific information please refer to the Mustang Band website Upon completion of auditions the full Band roster for fall 2014 will be announced by Aug 3 Cost Each new member must purchase a Pep Band jersey 15 White gloves are available starting at 1 50 All purchases will be through the band s Uniform Manager Students are responsible for finding white marching shoes for the formal uniform If you have white non shiny marching shoes from high school then you may use those Refer to the Mustang Band website for specifications and recommendations for placing your order For those students who need a state owned instrument percussion sousaphone marching French horn etc a 10 music use fee must be paid for each quarter the instrument is used This fee is paid at the Cashier s Office on campus Band Camp Band Camp is a great deal of fun and provides you with an opportunity to meet other band members and review the playing and marching skills that you will need in order to be a successful member of the band Band Camp for new members will begin on Friday Sept 11 We will cover the costs and make arrangements for you to move in early Band Camp will pause for

    in Opera Theatre Dear New Cal Poly Student Welcome to Cal Poly As producer of Cal Poly s Student Opera Theatre and a teacher of applied voice and performance I want to thank you for your interest in our opera workshop and solo vocal performance opportunities and congratulate you on your acceptance to Cal Poly Our Student Opera Theatre provides periodic fully staged productions partnering in opera education with Opera SLO utilizing student directors costumers pianists and band or orchestra at the discretion of the vocal faculty Additional solo performances for voice students are provided through master classes with renowned and distinguished guest artists annual concerts for the local Opera Lovers group solo competitions and by audition as comprimario or chorus members in Opera San Luis Obispo productions My colleagues Thomas Davies and Katherine Arthur and I design our performances and programs to serve as many student soloists as possible and promote training in opera theater performance technique Being involved in staged productions and the many other solo opportunities will help provide you with necessary career and life skills Cal Poly Student Opera Theatre casts a large number of student vocalists and assistants as well as musicians and then trains them in performance technique aria and song study stage direction and blocking acting and audition technique and technician and stage techniques Past productions with Opera San Luis Obispo have included Mozart s The Magic Flute 2013 and Puccini s Suor Angelica 2012 There have also been scenes from Strauss Der Rosenkavalier and Die Fledermaus Rodgers and Hammerstein s Oklahoma Mozart s Impresario and Haydn s Apothecary Purcell s Dido and Aeneas The Kurt Weill Show and additional classic scenes from opera and Broadway Each involved performance opportunities for 20 40 students and the productions were fully costumed staged and performed

    you for expressing interest in the music technologies sound design or composition courses at Cal Poly The Music Department maintains courses in both the traditional and innovative aspects of music theory and composition A series of music theory courses leads students through the traditional analytical tools for studying composition Another track of courses in sound design techniques prepares students for creative work in the music technologies such as electroacoustic composition recording and theatrical sound design Your involvement in the field of sound design or composition will be exciting The Music Department offers students the opportunity to work in the Sound Design Studio which is equipped for synthesis digital signal processing sound recording and creative development The department also provides hands on learning in recording by giving students the opportunity to record department ensembles in concert In the past the Sound Design program has released compact disks of student works and presented multi media concerts of solely student compositions The Music Department always attracts a wide variety of guest lecturers and presents an enormous number of concerts master classes and recitals In addition Cal Poly s many academic strengths afford opportunities to take classes in programs related to the sound technologies

  • David Arrivée - Music Department - Cal Poly
    Associate Professor in the Cal Poly Music Department where he teaches theory and coaches chamber ensembles He is also the Assistant Conductor of the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival Before moving to the Central Coast he served as the Assistant Conductor of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and taught music theory at Northwestern University He has guest conducted the Green Lake Festival Orchestra Princeton University Orchestra Auros Ensemble for New Music Bradley University Orchestra South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Northwestern University Philharmonic Arrivée received a bachelor s degree from Princeton University and a master of music degree in orchestral conducting from Boston University where he studied with David Hoose While in Boston Arrivée was active as a clarinetist in the Boston University Symphony Orchestra as a vocal accompanist and as a conductor He served as the assistant for the Boston University Symphony Orchestra and the March Chapel Choir of Boston University conducted the Auros Ensemble for New Music and sang with the Cantata Singers During a period abroad Arrivée lived and worked in Leipzig Germany where he served as a pianist and conductor for the Schola Cantorum He moved to Chicago to pursue
