    as well as much of my adolescence in pursuit of this art This quest has been enjoyable rewarding challenging frustrating and educational However there is something odd almost out of place in today s commodified world about devoting one s career to something intangible which exists only in time Fortunately the benefits that music can offer are substantial A curious feature of music s rewards is that they are limitless If we share a sandwich with a friend we each get half a sandwich But music expands and flourishes when we share it We do not possess music instead we are conduits for it In that sense music is inherently social whether we are listening to music at a concert or if we are the people making the music come to life Both of these activities are fun I don t think that it s a mistake that in English as in German we refer to instrumentalists as playing music There is something inherently joyous almost childlike in the act of making music with others in front of others We ll have a special opportunity in early March 2016 to experience an international version of this musical sharing in the

    purposes is a significant challenge and we owe special thanks to our project manager from Facilities Services Dave Norton and our architect Stephen King The acoustics have been improved tremendously Air handling is now almost inaudible and the carefully placed acoustic treatments on the ceiling and walls have added a glorious resonance to a rather dry room We now have whiteboards for classroom use no more chalk dust in pianos an improved sightline for the enlarged overhead screen and side handrails for safer negotiation of the risers Aesthetically the room is visually pleasing with new wood flooring complementing the varied color scheme while the paneled walls and ceiling reflectors add textural interest Room 218 occupies a significant spot in the lives of our students For incoming freshmen GE students Craig Russell s opening Music Appreciation lecture is a memorable introduction to the wondrous possibilities of being at college Room 218 is also where our music majors auditioned for the program met with the entire faculty rehearsed took classes performed in student recitals and for many gave senior recitals It is where our department says thank you and goodbye to our graduates in our own commencement ceremony It is to borrow a phrase where our departmental circle of life takes place and we re very happy that this cycle will now occur in an attractive resonant home New Pianos The Music Department was pleased to take delivery this summer of a fleet of new Yamaha pianos This delivery immediately upgraded our piano inventory and is a major step forward in dealing with the concerns our program accreditors had about our aging equipment We received seven beautiful upright Yamahas and four new cutting edge hybrid AvantGrand pianos The AvantGrand combines sophisticated sound sampling with an ingenious speaker array set up to project

    It was such a pleasure to have PolyPhonics perform such a beautiful work in our Winter Concert There was an immediate standing ovation from the audience Well deserved Troy Hanson Music major Troy Hanson is the 2015 winner of the Rotary Club s 3 000 Billy Watson Memorial Scholarship Award The award was presented at the club s annual Scholarship Day on Monday May 18 He and his accompanist music major Kevin Glass performed for the club members and other scholarship winners Hanson studies bass with Cal Poly faculty member Ken Hustad He is a member of the Cal Poly Symphony the University Jazz Band and the Arab Music Ensemble In addition he often performs with the San Luis Obispo Symphony San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra and other community organizations Rose in Dublin By Rose Doylemason This summer I had the amazing opportunity to study music in the beautiful Irish capital of Dublin As a participant in Dublin Brass Week I was exposed to nearly a dozen professional orchestral studio and commercial players from around the world The 12 hour days were a mix of private lessons master classes sectionals and performances around the city led by the incredible staff of Dublin s Royal Irish Academy of Music My peers consisted of advanced high school undergraduate graduate and professional musicians from throughout Europe and the U S many winners of brass competitions and coveted seats in orchestras Trombones trumpets and French horns each had their own star studded staff of professionals including Los Angeles film industry great Malcolm McNab trumpet world renowned pedagogue and performer Frøydis Ree Wekre horn and former principal trombonist of the Vienna Philharmonic Ian Bousfield Perhaps the most important lesson I learned from my immersion in the program is that there are two distinct halves of
