    William Johnson Calendar of Events Alumni Update Mustang Band on the Road Soundboard Newsletter 2015 Spring In Memoriam In Memoriam Yvonne Edmisten Yvonne and John Edmisten Yvonne Hsu Edmisten passed away on Feb 26 She was the inspiration behind the inception of the Cal Poly Student Opera Theatre founded by faculty member Jacalyn Kreitzer in 2001 Kreitzer and Edmisten often talked about providing an opera experience for students at Cal Poly and Edmisten and her husband John provided the first major donations to fund the program Getting young people involved in opera was Edmisten s dearest wish and she helped fund and support many student filled shows over the years including Haydn s The Apothecary Mozart s The Magic Flute Strauss Die Fledermaus and Puccini s Suor Angelica among others She was one of the founders of the local Opera Lovers Meet in 1994 Cal Poly students have sung for its members annually for 10 years most recently on Feb 4 at the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church An annual scholarship in Edmisten s name will be established for deserving Cal Poly voice students The April performances of Lehár s The Merry Widow will be dedicated to her memory

    in Room 218 of the Cal Poly Davidson Music Center They are collaborating on a song cycle project that gathers myriad songs spanning centuries and genres Astaire will accompany Swearningen on the cimbalom a Hungarian hammered dulcimer notable for its complex and haunting tonal qualities The cycle titled Dear I of that Day Remembered Songs of a Distant World includes songs by Schubert The Beach Boys Merle Haggard and many others separated by time or genre but linked by mood and memory More information on the calendar website Meredith Brammeier Meredith Brammeier will travel to Vancouver Canada this spring to perform with Canzona Women s Ensemble in the Tapestry International Celebration of Women s Choirs hosted by Elektra Women s Choir In addition to singing with Canzona Brammeier will also conduct the ensemble in the Canadian premiere of her composition To the God of Light and Shadow a setting of poetry by Bonnie Young commissioned by Canzona Canzona will sing as a featured ensemble in Choral Threads on Friday May 1 and as part of a 120 voice combined choir in the Gala Concert on Saturday May 2 For more information regarding these concerts visit the Elektra Women s Choir

    launched a career as a musical arranger transcriber and composer At the end of July I will become president of WASBE for two years As president I will preside over a regional conference in Prague in 2016 and an international conference in Utrecht Netherlands in 2017 WASBE is an international association of wind band conductors composers publishers and performers from more than 50 countries We strive to provide our members with many resources including international and regional conferences information about new repertoire commissioning new works for wind band organizing conducting seminars and workshops publishing a magazine and a journal and much more The ABA is one of the most prestigious band organizations in the world It was founded by Edwin Franko Goldman and others in the 1930s with John Philip Sousa as its honorary life president The organization held its annual convention in San Luis Obispo in 2007 and will return March 2 5 2016 for its 82nd convention This convention will include delegates from the Japan Bandmasters Association The Music Department will sponsor a four day music festival during the convention with feature performances by the Cal Poly Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra along with ensembles from Japan and the U S One of the highlights will be a performance by the U S Army Field Band from Washington D C The Iota Pi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi will be the organizers of the convention s activities As a member of the OperaSLO board of directors I have an opportunity to be part of some wonderful opera productions in our community most recently a performance of Giuseppe Verdi s Aida We are also assisting Cal Poly in its production of Franz Lehár s The Merry Widow I have become a transcriber and arranger of music for the wind

    PolyLink Mark Miller Mark Miller B A Music 2007 Wind Ensemble Symphony Concert Band Jazz Band II Trombone Choir Brass Choir I am now living in San Gabriel Calif with my wife I finished my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trombone performance from USC in 2013 and I am now teaching and performing gigs throughout Southern California In March I will present a lecture titled Gender Bias and Brass Players at the Colorado State University Brass Workshop in Fort Collins Colo On March 21 I will return to the Central Coast as a featured soloist at the third annual Roy Main Brass Festival at Cuesta College I hope to catch up with as many Cal Poly friends and colleagues as possible I always look back on my time at Cal Poly with much fondness and I am very glad for the stellar education and experiences I received John Reed John Reed B A Music 1994 University Jazz Band Contemporary Music Ensemble Concert Band I have accepted a new teaching position this year I am the band director at Moore Middle School and the assistant band director at Pomona High School in Arvada Colo My duties include teaching seventh and
