    on spring tour at Cal Poly for the San Dieguito High School District I ve been married for 41 years and have three grown daughters The oldest Angela graduated from Cal Poly in 1999 with a degree in landscape architecture For over 20 years I ve been singing and playing bass at church Russ Cummings Russ Cummings 1999 Music 1977 Aerospace Engineering 1990 99 Piano Ensemble Cummings became head of the U S Air Force Academy s Department of Aeronautics in the fall of last year In his spare time he is a substitute teacher for the music history course at the academy Christine Nasol Christine Nasol 2006 Music 2001 06 University Singers PolyPhonics I have been living in Brooklyn N Y for the past three years and recently earned a master s degree in music therapy at New York University Currently I provide music therapy socialization groups for preschool age children with developmental delays on the autism spectrum at two different therapeutic preschools the Manhattan Early Childhood Center and the Children s Learning Center In addition I work with Art Beyond Sight an organization providing learning experiences through music and art to the visually impaired Through this organization I work with the gifted students at the Lavelle School for the Blind and the New York Institution for Special Education Jon Hall Cast as Stacey Jaxx in Rock of Ages After graduation Jon Hall a 2010 music graduate and former Mustang football fullback went on to play several different characters on stage and on television including Warbler John in the TV show Glee Since fall 2013 he has been featured in the musical Rock of Ages presented at the Venetian in Las Vegas Hall was cast as Stacee Jaxx the role played by Tom Cruise in the film adaptation The same production team is putting on the show in New York Cast members are shared between the two locations so it may not be long before Hall makes his debut on the Great White Way Hall said My experience in Las Vegas has been wonderful I am really enjoying the role of Stacee Jaxx and love singing great 80s hits I work all but Monday night so my days are completely off which gives me time to work on other projects I ve found that being a resident of Las Vegas is a lot different than being a visitor My wife and I are beginning to settle into the city but we don t go to the strip much unless it s for work or a red carpet or nonprofit event I m loving my job Loren Keagle and Chad Tindel Loren Keagle 2001 Physics Music minor flute and Chad Tindel 2000 Computer Science major trumpet met during their first year at Cal Poly when they were in the Mustang Band and Wind Orchestra and quickly became friends They were roommates for their final years at Cal Poly and together served as back to back presidents of the Mustang Band

    New Orleans Jazz and Tin Pan Alley Cal Poly music majors who are veterans of the music history series will be glad to know that an excerpt from Pierrot lunaire is used to represent Expressionism The national USAD finals will take place in Honolulu Hawaii April 24 26 Another long standing writing project is also coming to fruition in 2014 Two Cal Poly graduates Loren Keagle and Chad Tindel veterans of the band program and other Music Department courses are producing a series of DVDs under the title Learning From the Legends The recordings guide student musicians through the complexities of various masterworks starting with violin concertos by Mendelssohn and Bruch and the Haydn and Hummel concertos for trumpet McLamore wrote the program notes to help students understand the context and stature of each composition For more information on their project go to the Alumni Update In the meantime McLamore has continued to provide program notes to the San Luis Obispo Symphony the Cuesta Master Chorale and the Festival Mozaic summer concerts along with its affiliated Wintermezzo series She also presents pre concert lectures for the Festival Mozaic and Cal Poly Arts Early risers on New Year s Day might have spotted her in the Pasadena Rose Parade once again serving as assistant director of the Tournament of Roses Honor Band She is also rebuilding her horn embouchure in order to join the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra and the Cuesta Master Chorale in their spring performances of the Queen Symphony Craig Russell After longtime radio host Andy Harp decided to step down from hosting his classical music programs on KCBX the local affiliate of National Public Radio the station approached Professor Craig Russell and Jill Anderson co founder of the Pacific Repertory Opera and the Canzona Women s Ensemble

    both faculty and students I m getting my own chance to practice Learn by Doing this winter and spring while I ll be on sabbatical My task will be to practice the piano five to six hours a day while taking lessons with Daniel Pollack my master teacher when I attended USC While I m away the Music Department will be led by Meredith Brammeier I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know about my colleague who is an outstanding teacher and composer Brammeier hails from the Midwest with ties to both Chicago and Des Moines Her degrees are from Princeton Bachelor of Arts in music Eastman Master of Music in composition and USC Doctor of Musical Arts in composition She is an accomplished composer in both choral and instrumental realms and is a fine pianist and singer Her work Stitches in Time was premiered by the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra in 2009 and was performed in the Walt Disney Concert Hall by the same group She is currently writing a new choral piece to be performed in Carnegie Hall this March by PolyPhonics At Cal Poly Brammeier is in charge of our musicianship and theory program an

    Music Department s major ensembles are teaming up for a trip to Carnegie Hall in the spring PolyPhonics Cal Poly s premier chamber choral ensemble and the Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble have been invited to give the showcase performance at the World Projects 2014 New York Choral Festival to be held March 16 18 at this most prestigious concert venue High school choirs from around the U S including Puerto Rico will also be performing Professor Thomas Davies who conducts PolyPhonics will be a festival faculty clinician and adjudicator for several of the high school performances In addition to the Carnegie Hall performance PolyPhonics and the Arab Music Ensemble conducted by Associate Professor Ken Habib will perform a concert and give a lecture demonstration at the CUNY Graduate Center on March 17 The Graduate Center combines rigorous academic training in the humanities sciences and social sciences with globally significant research It is home to the Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center and it is the principal doctorate granting institution of the City University of New York Wrapping up the tour the ensembles will give a performance on March 20 at St Peter s Episcopal Church in the heart

    team in the first round game against Pennsylvania State University This was an exciting time not only to be a Mustang but to be a member of the Pride of the Pacific Coach Faith Mimnaugh had this to say When our band played the national anthem at the NCAA tournament the opposing coach said Wow your band rocks Of course I ve known that all along After 18 years on the Cal Poly sideline the national anthem is the best version I ve ever heard and it still sends chills up my spine We are so proud to have the Mustang Band as part of our team They really do ROCK Jazz Band Gets Them Swingin in Sacramento and San Francisco The University Jazz Band I performed in Sacramento and San Francisco in April 2013 In Sacramento the band played at the Midtown Stomp a regular swing dance venue and one of the most popular in Sacramento The band s performance was well received the large dance floor was packed and the band was invited back to play the Midtown Stomp anytime Sitting in for much of the performance was former band member Justin Au The band was happy to re connect with Justin and to play with him again The band s next performance was at one of San Francisco s best jazz clubs the Savanna Both Cal Poly big bands had played at the Savanna in 2009 A great audience of Cal Poly alumni from the Bay Area heard the band and another former member vocalist Josh Little sat in with the band and sang a few tunes Arab Music Ensemble s Southern California Tour The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble traveled to southern California last spring for a two day tour They were invited to perform April
