    Canzona and features poetry by Arroyo Grande poet Bonnie Young Titled To the God of Light and Shadow the poem portrays life in California and the beauty of the Central Coast The PolyPhonics women will perform several additional works including Gwyneth Walker s I Thank You God and an arrangement of the British folk song The Lass from the Low Country Canzona will also perform To the God of Light and Shadow in Fresno on May 3 2014 as part of a joint concert with women s choir Soli Deo Gloria Russell Teaches Courses for SUSTAIN Professor Craig Russell has been part of the experiment called SUSTAIN in which faculty and students work intensively on project based learning that is involved with the community Students apply to the program and if accepted are assured of getting the classes offered by the SUSTAIN faculty That enables faculty to coordinate projects and assessment across the various disciplines In spring when Russell taught Music of the 60s he worked with Carley Kopecki in the Physics Department and with students enrolled in both of their classes They overlapped in areas of sound waves resonance and the musical timbres of Jimi Hendrix and the acid rock bands of the 1960s Some of the projects in Russell s class involved the creation of underground newspapers much like the ones from the late 60s poems songs lobbying student government to adopt more sustainable and ecologically responsible campus policies research projects statistical studies of the properties of Top 40 hits writing computer code for programs analyzing acid rock songs building transistors documentary films regarding energy policies on campus and more Russell hopes to continue these cross disciplinary and learning based projects in his classes this year working with professors and students in engineering business agriculture science and math

    Lincoln Calif in 2009 In May 2009 I had acute bilateral renal failure and am presently on kidney dialysis We live in Grover Beach on property we were able to help our son purchase I am working to regain my voice and am scheduled to sing a solo in church on December 8 S Richard Mitsuoka 1973 Architecture 1969 73 Marching and Symphonic Bands 1970 73 Trombone Section Leader Designer of the first Cal Poly band button I am no longer playing but have been involved over the years with swing bands orchestras and churches plus the Band X the world s largest non marching marching band Professionally I have been working in the architectural field Robert Bob Nichol 1968 Electronic Engineering 1964 68 Men s Glee Music Club two year chairman of Music Board of Control I ve officially retired but continue to work in the moving picture business doing restoration and access preservation of small gauge motion picture films less than 35mm videotape and sound recordings After a long career in engineering naval architecture oil and gas pulp and paper and petrochemicals I retired and moved to my current residence in Tucson Ariz My only participation now in music is as a passive listener I have some recordings and movies of Men s Glee concerts and California tours from 1964 68 Alumni are welcome to contact me if there is interest in copies Clarence Rail 1952 Agricultural Engineering 1948 52 Men s Glee Club Majors and Minors The day I registered in September of 1948 there was a table manned by the Men s Glee Club asking students to come sing with them At the time there was no Music Department but you could get one credit for Glee Club I tried out and was accepted I then

    and followed new passions they discovered because they explored music at Cal Poly Paul Hondorp who was a guest conductor for the Choirs Winter Concert tried out for choir in 1987 on a whim His audition got off to a bad start as he showed up wearing a Michigan hat and our choir director Thomas Davies is from Ohio Despite this inauspicious beginning Paul who earned his business degree in 1990 just before the music degree was launched quickly became an active and indispensable choir member An opportunity to conduct our London Study singers convinced him that he wanted to be a choir director He went on to earn three degrees in music culminating with his doctorate from Michigan State University He now heads the successful choral program at Western Kentucky University Michael Leopold started Cal Poly in 1990 as a nutrition major and loved to play rugby however he felt drawn to the study of music and ultimately changed majors He studied guitar with Craig Russell threw himself into his coursework and graduated with a music degree He then pursued early music studies at Sacramento State and in Milan Italy He performs on Baroque plucked instruments all over the
