  • OCOB - Cal Poly Students’ Packaging Line Design Wins National Competition
    PACKEXPO The PACK Solutions Challenge asked partner schools across the nation to create proposals for a dedicated production line to package and ship a fictional fast dissolve over the counter pharmaceutical product Cal Poly s team included industrial technology and packaging seniors Nick Abbatelli San Jose Rebecca Kisch Paso Robles Jeff Norton Emerald Hills and Patrick Salibi Felton They will share a 4 000 scholarship for their first place finish Cal Poly s team topped entries from seven other schools including Michigan State and Rutgers University The group s poster presentation also earned the People s Choice Award during the conference This is the first time Cal Poly has won the competition The students came together outside of class during the summer to work on the PMMI project Under the guidance of Cal Poly Professor Ajay Kathuria the students developed an end to end packaging line solution for a water sensitive product that incorporated federal regulations efficiency and economic viability The team won the competition because of its hands on approach sound technical understanding hard work and good communication skills For more information about the PACK Solutions Challenge and the PMMI also known as the Association for Packaging and Processing

  • OCOB - Orfalea College of Business Announces New Area Chairs
    area chair from 2007 to 2015 Borin joined Cal Poly in 1992 as a marketing professor and specializes in consumer goods marketing strategy and sustainable business He has taught at the Copenhagen Business College in Denmark Seinajoki Polytechnic Business School in Finland University of the Basque in Spain and Chiang Mail University in Thailand Borin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Fisheries from UC Davis an MBA from California State University in Sacramento and a doctorate from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia Professor Dobson will be taking over as the chair for the Finance area from Cyrus Ramezani who held the position from 2006 to 2015 Dobson joined the finance faculty of Cal Poly in 1990 where he has engaged in extensive research on the connections between the theories of financial economics and moral philosophy More recently he has expanded his research focus to include ethics theory as well as aesthetics theory Dobson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom and a Master of Arts in Economics as well as a doctorate in Finance from the University of South Carolina As area

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Students Win Paperboard Packaging Alliance Student Design Challenge
    the U S and Canada to create limited edition innovative toy packaging that could also be reused as an interactive structure with the toy Cal Poly s winning team came first out of 53 entries with a Star Wars light saber toy that extended and collapsed from the handle The team also carefully considered price point the target audience and efficient material usage in their marketing plan for the product The team included four students from Cal Poly s Orfalea College of Business business administration majors Alyssa Harben Auburn and Griffin Meinken Windsor economics major Michael Udinski Pleasanton and industrial technology major Austin Turner Atherton The team was awarded 5 000 in cash along with a 5 000 gift to Cal Poly s Packaging Program to improve student labs Cal Poly students developed their projects as part of an IT 408 Paper and Paperboard Packaging course taught by Javier de la Fuente an assistant professor of packaging This is the first time Cal Poly has taken the top spot in this challenge facing very stiff competition de la Fuente said These projects really show the synergy between marketing and packaging and I m incredibly proud of all of our projects Another team of Cal Poly students earned an honorable mention in the competition for their packaging design for a Lego Movie board game The team included industrial technology majors Catlin Khamashta Jackson and Jonathan Molnar San Diego business administration majors Josephina Ma Carson Jennifer Block La Jolla and Trevor Smith Orange and art and design major Doug Huynh San Jose Winners were chosen by a team of paperboard packaging industry professionals who rated submissions based on their response to the competition scenario innovative structural and graphic design functionality and quality of the finished product For more information about the PPA

  • OCOB - Three Business Alumni Inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame
    any event in NCAA Division I He was ranked in the top 10 nationally throughout his career at Cal Poly while setting school records for freestyle and individual medley He also won seven times at California State College Swimming Championships Adam went on to serve in the Air Force and coach both swimming and water polo He used his Industrial Arts degree to lead a 30 year career as an instrumentation engineer at McDonnell Douglas Adam retired in 2001 returning to San Luis Obispo with his wife Sally B S Physical Education 1968 Their children Ian Melinda and Natalie are also Cal Poly alumni Johnston quarterbacked the 1980 Cal Poly football team to the NCAA Division II National Championship He was also two time team captain and led the Mustangs to the 1978 playoffs He was Cal Poly s first quarterback to pass for over 2 000 yards in a season and completed 279 of 508 career passes Johnston still ranks sixth for career passing yards single season assing yards and completions among Mustang quarterbacks His three sons Patrick Phillip and Kenney all have come to Cal Poly to play or coach football Johnston went on to serve as the head coach at Carmel High School and pen several books on coaching football He and his wife Patty B S Physical Education 1983 have been married for 30 years Modglin was named an NFCA and Easton All American while leading Cal Poly s softball team to its first Big West Conference championship and first Division I post season appearance in 2007 She continues to hold school records for career batting average hits runs steals doubles triples stolen bases and slugging percentage Cal Poly honored Modglin with its Female Athlete of the Year award in 2007 She is the only Cal

    graduated Cal Poly with a degree in Industrial Technology and a minor in Packaging in 2012 represents Amazon Lab 126 on the Packaging Advisory Board He focuses on consumer electronic device packaging on demand labeling and other supply chain related challenges Marchetti also sits on the Institute of Packaging Professionals Golden Gate Chapter board Sean Frisby a Cal Poly alumnus with a bachelor s degree in Agribusiness and an MBA from Pepperdine brings his marketing background to the board Frisby has led brands like Ranir Eurofresh and NatureSweet across his 20 year career in consumer packaged goods Sean has launched over 1 200 products and holds a patent for a combined food storage and display container Henry Castillo a Cal Poly Industrial Technology alum with a minor in packaging represents Niagara Bottling beverage company As a packaging engineer at Niagara Castillo focuses on packaging optimization and product development Today he leads design and implementation of the company s products and packaging facilities across North America Anthony Bantug who earned degrees at San Jose State University and Michigan State University brings more than 15 years of packaging experience Cal Poly s Packaging Advisory Board He has spent three years at Amgen as a principal engineer for packaging and labeling Bantug is also involved in sterile packaging design and validation for biological and pharmaceutical products Marc Bevilacqua a CSU Long Beach alumnus also joins the board Bevilacqua is the vice president for global packaging at OIA Global a third party logistics provider in more than 75 countries He helps OIA provide resources material management programs and supply chain management to manufacturing plants These new board members join a cohort of 25 advisory board members who guide Cal Poly s Packaging Program For more than 20 years the board has helped the program

    on PayScale com Survey Cal Poly bachelor s degree graduates rank 14th in the nation among public universities for median salaries according to PayScale com s 2015 16 College Salary Report Early career graduates with a bachelor s degree from Cal Poly earn an average of 57 800 while graduates in mid career earn 99 500 according to the report On the list for bachelor s only graduates Cal Poly tied for 68th place with the University of Southern California on the full list of more than 1 000 public and private universities The quality of a Cal Poly Learn by Doing education is comparable to the best in the nation and this new ranking shows that said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D Armstrong We prepare our graduates to excel from Day One in their careers and we give them the hands on experiences and the critical thinking skills that help them to keep achieving at the highest levels The study also broke out nine different majors careers Cal Poly grads tied for fifth in computer science and ranked eighth in physical life sciences and 10th in communication journalism Early career starting salary data for each university in the PayScale report was derived from surveys of full time employees with five or fewer years of experience in their career who hold a bachelor s degree and no higher degrees Mid career salary data was derived from surveys of full time employees with at least 10 years of experience in their career or field The study separately ranked universities based on all graduate and undergraduate alumni Cal Poly offers some master s degrees but no doctorate level programs The full PayScale com report can be found at http www payscale com college salary report Posted Aug 26 2015 Recent News Paul
