  • OCOB - Cal Poly Students Rank High at Construction Management Competition
    The competition gives students the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real construction management problem by completing a land acquisition proposal During the convention students present their proposals and defend their projects in front of a panel of industry experts Cal Poly s proposal included market research and sales strategy product and site design green building initiatives land development estimates schedules and a financial analysis Congratulations to the NAHB student chapter at Cal Poly said Jerry Howard CEO of NAHB They and their competitors showed a great deal of talent along with a depth of understanding of building industry management from land development to marketing to scheduling to estimating Cal Poly team members included construction management students Josh Gleason and Eric Sanchez architecture student Derik DeLonzor business students Chris Bet and Anna Costa and city and regional planning student Darya Oreizi Business student Scott Heath and construction management student Nick Gibson also assisted with preparing the proposal Bet acted as team captain and was also recognized as an outstanding student during the awards ceremony This distinction was given based on Bet s grade point average involvement in the local student chapter club and interest in pursuing a career in the housing industry I think this is a big step for both the Orfalea College of Business and the College of Architecture Environmental Design Bet said In the past teams from just one discipline competed This accomplishment shows how strong we can be when we come together Cal Poly Construction Management Professor Scott Kelting served as faculty advisor to the students Finance Professor Pratish Patel also worked with the team as they prepared for the finance and business portions of the project Cal Poly has participated in the competition since 2001 finishing in the top five during

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Alumni Named Roblans of the Year in Paso Robles
    The pair met while attending Cal Poly John studied industrial arts now called industrial technology while Marjorie majored in industrial engineering After graduating the two purchased Marjorie s family business now run as Hamon Overhead Garage Doors Marjorie Hamon has lived in Paso Robles for more than 50 years She has served as governor of the Paso Robles Paderewski Festival volunteered with local Boy Scouts coached AYSO youth soccer and has been a longtime supporter of the Paso Robles Pioneer Day parade and bean feed John is currently serving his third term as a Paso Robles City Councilman He has volunteered his time for the Boy Scouts the Paso Robles Rotary Club and the Volunteer Fire Department He sits on the Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Industrial Technology Advisory Board for Cal Poly s Orfalea College of Business As a local pilot John also serves on the city s Airport Advisory Board At the gala the Hamons were presented with special honors from the California State Legislature and the Paso Robles City Council Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian also a Cal Poly alumnus was on hand to recognize the Hamons The Roblan of the Year award is

    returns while Orfalea College of Business faculty and volunteer CPAs will review and file them Orfalea College of Business alumni Michelle Curry and Ashley Woodring of Radakovich Shaw Blythe LLP will assist the VITA clinics by reviewing and filing returns Cal Poly s VITA clinic runs from 10 30 a m to 2 p m Saturdays from Jan 31 through March 14 Students will prepare basic forms including 1040 1040A 1040EZ 540 540A 540EZ and some supporting forms No appointments are needed people will be served on a first come basis Those participating are asked to bring their Social Security card or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number 2013 tax returns and all 2014 tax related documents including childcare expenses and health insurance coverage information VITA tax preparers will be available on the third floor of the Cal Poly Business Building No 3 Visitors should enter Cal Poly on California Boulevard and follow the signs to the Orfalea College of Business The clinic is wheelchair accessible and parking is free Community members should arrive at Cal Poly before 1 p m to allow sufficient time to complete returns accurately Cal Poly students will also staff additional VITA clinics throughout the Central Coast in partnership with the United Way of San Luis Obispo County and the United Way of Northern Santa Barbara County They include Grover Beach Business Career OneStop of Five Cities 1800 East Grand Ave Open Saturdays from Jan 31 April 4 Santa Maria Allan Hancock College s Community Education Center 800 S College Dr Building S Open Saturdays from Jan 31 April 4 closed Feb 15 and 22 The Grover Beach and Santa Maria clinics offer appointments through local United Way chapters Call 805 922 0329 ext 103 to make an appointment The Orfalea College of Business has been hosting

  • OCOB - Cal Poly to Host Central Coast Lean Summit Feb. 19-20
    effort less space less capital and less time to make products and services cost less with fewer defects Companies are able to respond quickly to changing customer desires with high variety high quality and low cost Also information management becomes simpler and more accurate This year s theme Frontliners Engaged in Problem Solving will focus on lean innovations trends and best practices that are valuable to practitioners in a variety of industries Organizers also hope to foster a community of local leaders who can build their network with likeminded managers engaged in lean strategies Lean is not just for manufacturing anymore said Eric Olsen Cal Poly s Industrial Technology area chair There are folks from government education service industries and agriculture to name a few Lean provides a common set of tools and approaches that can work for any organization Olsen also serves as director of Central Coast Lean a research project in the Orfalea College of Business Programs throughout the event will be led by industry professionals many of whom have achieved black belt status in lean practices through the International Association of Six Sigma Certification The event will begin with a pre summit workshop Feb 19 to help attendees learn the lean language through a hands on simulation The summit on Feb 20 will feature interactive workshops led by Tom Jackson of Rona Consulting Group Beau Keyte of the Keyte Group Andrea Church Kreisa a lean six sigma master black belt Peggy Huston chief operating officer UC Berkley s Campus Shared Services and Keith Inglis Helix Medical Norbert Majerus a senior master six sigma black belt at Goodyear will deliver the keynote address Principle based Problem Solving in Lean R D A coaching café will openly discuss lean challenges and offer best practices during a facilitated peer group

    collaboration at Cal Poly The Orfalea College of Business will offer 25 000 in prizes and funding throughout three rounds of competition We are grateful for the generosity and vision of the Orfalea College of Business in partnering with Kennedy Library on this competition for the last seven years said Anna Gold dean of library services We re also proud of the ingenuity and creativity of the many students who ve participated It s because of them that this year s competition includes for the first time funding that will bring students ideas to life In the first round of the competition students submit a 60 second video pitch about their ideas for how the library can foster interdisciplinary collaboration at Cal Poly For the second round winners of the video pitch are invited but not required to write a one page business plan for the idea they pitched in their videos The student or team who submits the winning business plan moves into the third and final round working with library staff and faculty on developing their idea with 20 000 in funding In addition to the potential cash awards participating in the Pitch Perfect Competition is a way for students to build their professional portfolios by documenting their process and building career readiness The theme acknowledges that interdisciplinary collaboration is important not just while students are at Cal Poly but in their future careers Career readiness remains one of our biggest goals here in the Orfalea College of Business said Dean Scott Dawson Opportunities like this empower students in business and beyond to work like professionals by collaborating on a project that can have lasting impact on our campus community I m eager to see what fresh ideas students will pitch The deadline for the first round the
