  • OCOB - Cal Poly Business Students Prepare to Study Away in Silicon Valley
    to make an impact on day one of their careers and when it comes to entrepreneurship I can t think of a better training ground than this program Orfalea College of Business professors Tom Katona and Tod Nelson will teach entrepreneurship courses complemented by business ethics curriculum taught by Cal Poly philosophy professor Kenneth Brown Katona Nelson and Brown will visit Silicon Valley periodically to work with students in and out of the classroom Students will also have the chance to engage with Cal Poly alumni and guest speakers from the valley s startups and venture capital firms This is much more than just an academic experience for our students said Katona of the program This is an immersive experience into the entrepreneurial culture that is thriving in Silicon Valley and driving business globally Orfalea College of Business students studying industrial technology finance entrepreneurship and economics will participate in the program The cohort includes Katie White a business administration freshman and winner of the Audience Choice Award at the 2014 Ray Scherr Pitch Competition Entrepreneurship sophomore Nicholas Sinai will also participate in the program He was named University Innovation Fellow by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation Epicenter in 2014 Alfredo Espinoza business administration freshman and a member of the Cal Poly Wrestling Team will also be part of the cohort The Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs program is a partnership between Draper University and Cal Poly that aims to amplify the Learn by Doing philosophy As part of the Cal Poly s larger effort to build innovative curriculum and programs the university and its Center for Innovation Entrepreneurship have developed a spectrum of resources for students to develop and sharpen new products create startups and collaborate across disciplines while working toward their degree Those resources include the SLO HotHouse

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Scholars Program Extends to the Orfalea College of Business
    connect the university with students at partner schools California high schools that serve communities with large proportions of first generation and low income students This is the first time the program has included business students The program has been specially adapted for students in the Orfalea College of Business to support its goals for four year graduation As part of a Freshman Success Program each of the Cal Poly Scholars majoring in business completed BUS 100 Student Orientation and College Success which helps students navigate available resources in the college as they plan for a successful academic career The Cal Poly Scholars program was created with incentives including study abroad opportunities for business students who graduate within for years Cal Poly Scholars were also given an iPad at the start of fall quarter to assist with their studies Most Cal Poly Scholars live together on campus in the Cerro Vista residence hall where they can thrive in a supportive living learning community outside of the classroom The intent of the Cal Poly Scholars program aligns closely with that of the Orfalea Foundation which believes strongly in extending academic opportunities to students with different backgrounds and points of view According to

  • OCOB - Cal Poly, Professor Earn High Ranks for Research in Accounting Education, Ethics
    scholars publishing in the field of accounting education since 2008 The publication surveyed top industry research journals to rank the universities and scholars with the greatest contributions to the discipline Bentley University Baylor University San Diego State University and The Ohio State University were ranked along with Cal Poly out of 1 600 universities nationwide Mintz has been honored throughout his career for his research in accounting In a 2010 survey published by Research in Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting Mintz earned high marks for his research in accounting ethics The publication surveyed research published in 26 business ethics publications and accounting s top 40 journals between 1986 and 2008 Mintz ranked No 5 for coauthor adjusted articles in business ethics journals and No 2 for specific accounting ethics journals The research also ranked Mintz No 7 for his researchin sole authored publications and No 4 for co authored publications Mintz has been a part of the California State University system since 1978 He has served as the Accounting Department chair at San Francisco State University and dean of the College of Business at CSU San Bernardino Mintz joined Cal Poly s Orfalea College of Business faculty in 2006

  • OCOB - Business Professor Honored for Marketing and Public Policy Research
    Poly s Orfalea College of Business was honored with the Thomas C Kinnear Journal of Public Policy Marketing Award at the annual American Marketing Association Educator s Conference in 2014 The award honors articles that made the most significant contribution to the understanding of marking and public policy issues within the last three years Davis coauthored the paper titled From Nutrients to Nurturance A Conceptual Introduction to Food Well Being in the spring of 2011 The authors propose that the food as health paradigm should shift to food as wellbeing with a greater emphasis on a positive holistic understanding of the role of food one s psychological physical and emotional health The paper examines food literacy marketing availability policy and socialization at individual and societal levels Davis coauthors include Lauren G Block Sonya A Grier Terry L Childers Jane E J Ebert Shiriki Kumanyika Russell N Laczniak Jane E Machin Carol M Motley Laura Peracchio Simone Pettigrew Maura Scott and Mirjam N G van Ginkel Bieshaar Davis joined Cal Poly s marketing faculty in the fall of 2014 after teaching at Baylor University and Azusa Pacific University He is currently developing new curriculum regarding marketing analytics data and transformative consumer

    business administration concentrating in finance Lilly currently serves as president of Technicolor Home Entertainment Services the world s largest manufacturer and distributor of DVD Blu ray and related home entertainment products Since 1999 he has been responsible for the strategic development and growth of Technicolor s worldwide operations including manufacturing distribution and supply chain operations Most notably Lilly has positioned the company for success across 12 countries by maintaining strong relationships with Hollywood studios app software and games publishers Today he continues to lend his expertise to the Executive Committee of Technicolor Inc the Paris based publicly traded parent company Throughout the 1990s Lilly served as Technicolor s senior vice president of planning and development and chief operating officer Before joining the company Lilly leveraged his Cal Poly finance degree to build a decade long career in investment banking and capital markets at Smith Barney and Crowell Weedon Co As a member of the Orfalea College of Business Dean s Advisory Council since 2005 he has helped shape the direction of the college in step with an ever evolving business landscape In addition to establishing a scholarship for outstanding business students Lilly is especially passionate about forging connections between Cal

  • OCOB - Marketing Senior Project Draws Hundreds to Film Screening
    marketing seniors from Cal Poly s Orfalea College of Business on Monday Nov 17 in Chumash Auditorium The event featured videos from the Rational Middle Energy Series which explored varying points of view on energy production and consumption The Rational Middle Energy Series is sponsored by Shell Oil After the screening the film s director Gregory Kallenberg PG E meteorologist John Lindsey and REC Solar s Andrew Follock engaged in a panel discussion about the future of renewable energy sources the consequences of controversial practices like fracking and how public policy is driving a more diverse energy mixture Members of the audience posed questions to the panelists in a spirited exchange regarding the environmental impact and public safety concerns about solar wind hydroelectric geothermal and coal based energy The event was produced by marketing students in BUS 464 a senior project course in Joan Lindsey Mullikin Within the course the students formed an advertising agency they call 805 Consulting Throughout fall quarter 25 marketing seniors worked closely with Rational Middle and Shell Oil while planning the event s public relations tactics social media promotions and market research According to the senior project s goals the students developed an integrated communications plan to promote the event execute and emcee the screening and panel discussion and test the effectiveness of the event through a survey for all attendees The class will present a final report of the quantitative and qualitative research on the event s impact to Kallenberg and Shell Oil in December We were all so excited to see the Cal Poly community engaged in this discussion about our energy future said 805 Consulting s Abby Alami Communication was key within our own class and with our client in order to create a successful event For more information visit www rationalmiddle

    the TrustedPeer Experts who best matched the students interests and needs Each expert brought years of experience leading marketing advertising and branding efforts for global corporations The TrustedPeer Experts who participated in the program were Nancy Schaefer managing partner at Consumer Dynamics and former VP of Marketing for Kraft Foods David Burk CEO of the Electron Shop and creator of FleishmanHillard s integrated marketing strategy Don Transeth the founding Marketing Director for EA Sports at Electronic Arts who developed the tag line Its in the game Bruce Lincoln chief technology officer for Urban Cyberspace Company and a Senior Fellow Scholar at Columbia University s Graduate School of Business Philip Bouchard CEO and founder of TrustedPeer and a C level executive at five previous companies Rick Bragdon CEO of Idiom Brand Identity and the creator of hundreds of brand and company names Brian Morris the executive producer of the Can you hear me now campaign for Verizon Wireless and Where s the Beef campaign for Wendy s While these senior executives usually offer professional guidance in everything from brand naming strategy to disruptive innovation to fellow professionals they focused on their own career paths when advising Cal Poly s students The consultants discussed their career trajectories critical skills needed in their particular industries options like graduate school and successful networking skills The TrustedPeer Experts have helped me to see and learn more about the real life experiences in different advertising and marketing agencies said Posmoga a marketing major Through their stories I can see how their success and failures mistakes and lessons learned have shaped them into the successful businessmen and women they are today At the conclusion of the program students provided essential feedback to enrich the program which Cal Poly intends to continue in 2015 Based on student recommendations
