  • OCOB - Cal Poly Accounting Club Hosts Fall Symposium Recruiting Fair
    corporate recruiters in advance of fall interviews for internships and entry level positions The event now in its 27th year welcomed 43 firms to campus including the Big 4 accounting firms regional accounting firms and corporations such as Clorox Local accounting firms including Glenn Burdette and Longcrier Associates also recruited for internship and associate opportunities Roughly 300 students attended the event Scott Dawson dean of the Orfalea College of Business says this thriving event is a key indicator of career readiness among business students Many of these firms recruit from select schools and Cal Poly has cemented itself on those short lists he said It s due to the talent of our students the strength of our curriculum the commitment of our faculty and the fact that our hands on methods give students more practical experience before graduation According to Michelle Bissonnette CPAC s faculty leader this is the largest Fall Symposium event in the club s history in terms of student and corporate participation with more than 200 professionals present many of whom are Cal Poly alumni In her 15 years at Cal Poly she has witnessed the event evolve into an important opportunity for students to secure internships interviews and contacts for students nearing graduation The event has grown to include firms such as Leprino Foods Company and Lockheed Martin which hire a variety of graduates in finance and information systems as well as accounting Ryan Moore of Lockheed Martin noted that Cal Poly s business students are sought after because of the strength in curriculum and work ethic across disciplines The day was adapted to the needs of under and upperclassmen While juniors seniors and graduate students met with recruiters one on one freshmen and sophomores attended a professional development seminar to prepare them for a successful

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Students Earn Praise and Scholarships at Corrugated Fiberboard Structural Design Competition
    Cal Poly students took second place with their project called SLO Skyline Industrial Technology and Consumer Packaging majors Ikaika Valasco Andrew Morey Emily Mallett and Patrick Salibi incorporated the iconic hills of San Luis Obispo throughout their cardboard series of products in addition to the Cal Poly logo and mustang mascot Their project s 57 inch tall display accommodated tablet computers to display animated messages and allow students to sign up for emailed collateral to reduce waste Students received a 250 cash prize and plaque for permanent display The SLO Skyline products will go on to the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation s ICPF Best of the Best Student Design Presentation Competition Students will be able to pitch their entry before a panel of industry professionals at the ICPF s Careers in Corrugated Teleconference for additional cash prizes Third place in the AICC competition went to the The Surfing Cowboy project produced by Nicole Hermann Gregg Yasuda Victor Sanchez Zapata and Alyssa McPadden all of whom are students in the Orfalea College of Business The team blended the figures of cowboy on horseback and a surfer together to represent Cal Poly s balance between agricultural curriculum and beach town lifestyle The group s six foot display also featured a wearable cowboy hat and spur clad boots that adorned the brochure inserts Supporting collateral included a mailer that could be reused as a folder for collateral pieces Students received a 150 cash prize and plaque The AICC also awarded Catlin Khamashta 1 000 from the J Richard Troll Memorial Scholarship to support her education in Industrial and Packaging Technology at Cal Poly The scholarship is an annual award for three undergraduate and one graduate student majoring in packaging engineering or a related packaging field Khamashta s essay regarding her goals in the

    the new strategy as it bolsters its external presence with alumni industry partners and supporters worldwide In order to set our sights on our big goals career readiness international partnerships targeted graduate programs and cross pollination with other disciplines we have to put the right structure in place Dawson said My confidence in this team is echoed strongly by their colleagues and that gives us a great place to start Jaggia will lead the college s graduate programs which include master s degrees in business administration tax financial accounting and economics In his new role he will strengthen the quality of existing programs lead the development of new programs connect students to research opportunities enhance study abroad partnerships and foster industry mentorships Jaggia joined Cal Poly in 2007 and has research interest in empirical finance and econometrics Lertwachara will guide undergraduate programs among the college s six academic areas with a particular focus on preparing career ready graduates He will work closely with industry leaders who hire Orfalea College of Business alumni to evolve curricula and experiences outside the classroom in step with industry demand Lertwachara has been an information systems professor at Cal Poly since 2004 applying his expertise to electronic commerce online social networks and health care information He formerly served as the college s Management Human Resources and Information Systems Area chair Shani will oversee faculty and research directing faculty development hiring retention and promotion to ensure the college maintains the highest quality instructors who build a leading experiential business education for students In support of the university s teacher scholar model Shani will also connect faculty with research opportunities that help advance the fields they teach Shani joined Cal Poly in 1984 teaching organizational behavior He has also taught in China France Italy Ireland Israel and

    recipients according to PayScale com s new 2014 2015 College Salary Report Early career graduates with a bachelor s degree from Cal Poly earn an average of 56 200 behind their peers from UC Berkeley at 59 500 but above UC San Diego at 50 600 Mid career Cal Poly grads made about 100 100 less than bachelor s degree grads from UC Berkeley at 114 200 and UCSD at 102 100 the report said We know from our industry partners that Cal Poly graduates are sought after and valued said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D Armstrong This latest PayScale salary survey confirms what we have been saying for years Cal Poly graduates hit the ground running and their polytechnic Learn by Doing educations helps them adapt to changes throughout their careers Cal Poly ranked 63rd among all 1 002 public and private schools in median earning amid public and private institutions in the PayScale com report The online compensation database expanded this year s report to include salary outcome data for all graduates from a school including those who obtained higher degrees such as master s degrees and doctorates Cal Poly does not offer doctorate level programs Colleges and universities with the highest earning alumni almost all have one thing in common They produce a lot of engineers and other workers with valuable STEM degrees PayScale said STEM disciplines include science technology engineering and mathematics Early career starting salary data for each school in the PayScale report was derived from surveys of full time employees with five or fewer years of experience in their career who hold a bachelor s degree and no higher degrees Mid career salary data was derived from surveys of full time employees with at least 10 years of experience in their career or field

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Appoints New Joint Business/Engineering Faculty Member to Promote Entrepreneurship
    College of Business and College of Engineering with an eye toward fostering student entrepreneurial activity Katona will play a pivotal role in expanding collaboration among the College of Engineering the Orfalea College of Business and the Cal Poly Center for Innovation Entrepreneurship CIE Dr Katona is an engineer of depth and breadth who moves easily and naturally between business and engineering environments said Debra Larson dean of the College of Engineering No one could be better qualified to help us break new ground Katona sees his role as advancing innovation across disciplines using principles of design thinking and product development to nurture successful entrepreneurial activity on campus and in the local community That all encompassing approach will start in the classroom where he will teach a multidisciplinary design course in the College of Engineering and co teach an entrepreneurship course with Jonathan York professor in the Orfalea College of Business and co founder and faculty director of the CIE I see this as a major next step in advancing our goals to weave diverse disciplines with entrepreneurship across campus and through the CIE said York The CIE manages and supports a wide variety of entrepreneurial programs including the Innovation Sandbox Innovation Quest Competition and SLO HotHouse Summer Accelerator The challenge now is to expand the reach of those programs throughout the university Katona said My key role is to be an advocate for students and faculty who are working on interesting research or have great ideas and get them connected to the entrepreneurial support system that we re putting in place at CIE Katona has been working in startups for the past decade in capacities varying from hardcore engineering and development to marketing and business development He earned his master s and doctorate degrees in electrical and computer engineering from

  • OCOB - Doug Cerf Named Interim Executive Director of Cal Poly’s Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship
    comprised of advisors advocates and investors in the entrepreneurial business community Cerf will work closely with Jonathan York faculty director and co founder of CIE While York will remain focused on student projects and curriculum on campus Cerf will build CIE s infrastructure to sustain its success going forward including a financial vision for the center and a plan for student spaces on and off campus I m excited to continue the involvement I had with CIE during my time as interim dean Cerf said I hope to ensure the right foundation is in place so that faculty staff and students can continue to thrive there York said Doug s role is important to CIE as we fortify the program at such a critical stage of its growth and secure permanent leadership to take us forward With Cerf in his new role CIE anticipates an important year of growth ahead including a remodel of CIE s space on the Cal Poly campus in 2015 Cerf will also explore building partnerships to link entrepreneurial students to immersive learning opportunities in the Silicon Valley Cerf will also help explore and develop multidisciplinary programs in partnership involving the CIE the Orfalea College of Business and Cal Poly s other colleges The Orfalea College of Business has been a critical part of forging innovative programs at Cal Poly and I m honored to continue that tradition with my new role says Cerf Cerf joined the faculty at Cal Poly in 1990 His history with the Orfalea College of Business includes roles as accounting professor accounting area chair and associate dean in charge of undergraduate programs Most recently Cerf served as interim dean navigating the transition between former Dean Dave Christy s departure in 2013 and Dean Scott Dawson s arrival Aug 1 of this

  • OCOB - Orfalea College of Business Graduates Debut Start-Ups with the Cal Poly Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship
    discussed future plans before a packed house of CIE faculty donors alumni university leaders and industry mentors I m truly impressed by the creativity and hard work of our recent graduates who presented here today said Orfalea College of Business Dean Scott Dawson The quality of presentations and business ventures was on par with any university in the nation The breadth of majors represented by these promising companies is a testament to the collaborative creative spirit that CIE carries throughout the entire campus Of the teams four Orfalea College of Business graduates made formal presentations for the projects they founded in technology social retail and consumer products Justin Farr and Jordan Keplar two industrial techonology and packaging graduates presented their corrugated cardboard furniture company called The Cardboard Guys Their products including light yet strong adult and child sized desks and chairs are meant to be sustainable alternatives to cumbersome traditional products The two say they found the inspiration for this project while watching Cal Poly freshmen move heavy furniture in and out of their dorms each year Sander DiAngelis an entrepreneurship graduate from the Orfalea College of Business presented on behalf of Moja Outdoors He founded the venture along with international relations and liberal arts graduates as he developed the concept in Cal Poly s CIE Hatchery program on campus Its first endeavor Moja Gear is a community driven marketplace that connects outdoor enthusiasts with emerging apparel and gear brands DiAngelis describes the site as a hybrid between Etsy and eBay but for the outdoors Josh Hirahara spoke about his company Boost Acquisitions a venture he founded with fellow industrial technology graduate Scott Santore and a fellow computer science alumnus Its software automates the used car acquisition process for dealerships The web application sources cars from online marketplaces at the
