  • OCOB - Cal Poly’s Quarter Plus Program Gives Business Freshmen a Head Start
    incoming freshmen to move into campus dorms and take several courses distilled into a three week term before fall quarter officially begins This year s program has admitted 51 business and construction management students who take eight units of major and elective courses including anthropology and speech communications Marlow has adapted this economics course from a 10 week lecture intended for 200 students into an intense hybrid of lectures and online components adapted for just 30 students While such a structure offers more time for questions and rapport development for instructors students are also quickly developing the time management skills the hybrid model demands It s interesting your weekend is as long as your workweek notes Orfalea College of Business freshman Mark McGuire on his task of balancing free time and study requirements The Walnut Creek native leapt at the chance to join Quarter Plus knowing this economics class would not only apply to his business education but could also help him choose between different concentrations within it His favorite part of the class is the broader perspective the professor provides by exploring how concepts build upon one another for more complex problem solving And that s Marlow s intent He sees this early interaction with students through Quarter Plus as an opportunity to condition them for the rigors of higher education weaving topics about study skills faculty interaction and broad concept comprehension into his lesson about macroeconomics In his latest lecture Marlow covered everything from the class success in preparing for the midterm to GDP and interest rates to how the information presented in the class would be tested differently in an upper division course But the benefits of this program extend beyond the academic Away from the classroom McGuire has become very close with his cohort of Quarter

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Students Earn Praise in National Packaging Design Contest
    cardboard insert that turns tablet packaging into a convenient carrying case The insert features a tablet tilt support and compartments for accessories like charger cables and headphones According to the students the iPackage s functionality would encourage buyers to reuse the packaging instead of disposing of it The team comprised of Orfalea College of Business students in various majors and concentrations was awarded a trophy and 500 at the contest s awards banquet The students intend to enter the iPackage in the WorldStar Competition for global packaging innovation this fall Three other Cal Poly student teams received an honorable mention from AmeriStar for their product designs Jacob Garber Taylor Severn and Wes Zimmerman designed a spherical sunflower seed container that mimics the appearance of a baseball The Coat N Clean developed by Maddie Back Dylan Burau Mary Butcher Kelly Harding and Andrew Morey fuses a nail polish bottle cap with a small nail polish remover reservoir and wand for touch ups Rebecca Kisch Emily Mallet Megan Smith and Michael Stracey were recognized for creating a waterproof shatter proof makeup case with customizable color options This is Learn by Doing at its best said Koushik Saha assistant professor in the packaging program and advisor to three of the four winning teams Our packaging program has cemented itself in the industry on a national and global scale because our students feel empowered to apply their skills collaboratively and solve problems right now not just after they graduate The teams developed their designs during Packaging Fundamentals courses led by Saha and Cal Poly Packaging Program Director Jay Singh This is the second consecutive year that Cal Poly students have placed highly in the competition In 2013 Cal Poly teams swept first and second place honors from AmeriStar s student division About the Orfalea

    College of Business welcomed Scott Dawson as its new dean on Aug 1 Dawson comes to Cal Poly with a rich history in academics and business consulting As dean of the School of Business and Administration at Portland State University Dawson managed a faculty of 55 instructors and a 17 million budget He was instrumental in developing new international programs key industry partnerships and a 40 member Business Advisory Council that connected local leaders to the school s strategic and philanthropic development Notable advancements during Dawson s tenure as dean include launching four new master s programs starting the state s only Center for Real Estate creating the Center for Executive and Professional Education and launching progressive programs in the athletic apparel industry and the business of craft brewing In addition to his duties at Portland State Dawson also consulted for companies such as Costco InFocus Systems and advertising agency Wieden Kennedy Dawson has a Ph D in business and an MBA from the University of Arizona and a BS in mathematics from the University of Oregon Posted Aug 6 2014 Recent News Paul Orfalea Speaks to Students on Campus Visit Cal Poly Faculty Receives 400 000 Grant to Study

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Marketing Faculty Receive Professorship Awards
    outstanding faculty members in the marketing area The award founded by a family of Cal Poly alumni is given each year to Orfalea College of Business marketing faculty who make a significant impact on students lead their peers enhance learning initiatives provide student project opportunities and support the objectives of the college and university A committee from within the college including members from its Marketing Area Task Force the Executive Partners program and the Dean s Advisory Council manage the selection process The award s endowment provides resources for faculty s personal and professional development that wouldn t otherwise be available to the instructors Metcalf was selected for her role in establishing a partnership with Marketo that would introduce its marketing automation software into the area s curriculum She has also been instrumental in developing new cross disciplinary courses including Integrated Marketing Communications and Marketing Analaytics and Business Intelligence Lindsey Mulkin was awarded the distinction for her leadership in providing innovative class projects that epitomize the university s Learn by Doing philosophy The Hood family created the endowment in 2005 after their daughter Becky graduated with a degree in marketing The Hoods established a similar endowment to support faculty in Cal Poly s electrical engineering program where Richard and his son Brian are alumni I definitely benefited from the education I received from Cal Poly and now my children have also received an education that has prepared them for industry today We donated because we understand the budget situation said Hood upon establishing the award in 2005 Cal Poly is a big part of our family We respect the programs value the education and love the institution The Hood Professorship is an important example of alumni support in the Marketing area Similar professorships support the college s Accounting and Finance
