  • OCOB - Professor Chris Carr Visits Tunisia through Fulbright Specialists Program
    to participate in short term academic activities lasting from two to six weeks The recipients of the scholarships are chosen based on academic or professional achievement to support the development of faculties curriculums and institutional planning at post secondary academic institutions around the globe Carr completed a three week Fulbright program at the University of Sfax in Tunisia in December 2011 He advised the university and the Sfaxien region in the arenas of entrepreneurship innovation faculty development and accreditation Dr Slim Choura Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sfax and the faculty member who took the lead in bringing Professor Carr to Tunisia with the help of the Fulbright scholarship said Professor Carr is an outstanding colleague and scholar We were impressed to learn of Cal Poly s impressive successes and some of its best practices through his visit This was a unique opportunity for the Orfalea College of Business to reach a broader audience of academic professionals and to share its means of achieving Cal Poly s goals with another higher education establishment Dr Choura also said of the interaction Chris offered some wise strategic advice and recommendations to help us get to the next level In looking back at his experience in Tunisia Professor Carr said This is an exciting time to visit North Africa Tunisia was the very first country in the Arab world to accomplish meaningful political reform and it did so largely in a nonviolent manner The positive eagerness and energy of all Tunisians I met to move forward and seize the rare political and economic opportunity before them is inspiring In relation to his professional expertise Carr also noted It is also exciting to see the role that business will play in moving Tunisia forward Dr Slim Choura Professor of Mechanical Engineering

  • OCOB - Cal Poly Welcomes Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer in November
    Financial Officer for Apple is scheduled to speak at Cal Poly in the November installment of the Orfalea College of Business s Distinguished Speaker Series Oppenheimer s lecture will take place on November 10 2011 in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion from 1 10 to 2 00 p m The Distinguished Speaker Series is open to students faculty and staff from all majors and to members of the community This is a free event but there is a 5 fee to park on campus for those who do not already have a permit A Cal Poly alumnus Oppenheimer earned his degree in agricultural business in 1985 He started working at Apple in 1996 and is currently the acting CFO and Senior Vice President of Apple he also serves on the executive committee Oppenheimer maintains his ties to his alma mater as a member of the Cal Poly Foundation board The Orfalea College of Business Distinguished Speaker Series seeks to enhance the educational experience of business students and the Cal Poly community while showcasing programs faculty and students to the California business community After the event Peter Oppenheimer met with a small group of Orfalea College students Posted Oct 10 2011

  • OCOB - From Lab to Real Life: Industrial Technology Student Projects Take Off
    industry trends all contributing to career ready confidence In the capstone course IT 407 Applied Business Operations students have the chance to design manufacture and sell a self made product They invest their own money into producing 80 to 100 units and must then market and sell their creations to the community Some of this year s innovative designs include an outdoor barbecue caddy a trailer hitch hide a key a golf tee organizer and magnetic bottle opener To learn more about each product and team visit the IT 407 page Students in the Industrial Technology Society also helped Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong create custom spatulas as gifts for the holiday season Students manufactured hundreds of metal and wood spatulas which featured an engraving of the Cal Poly logo The spatulas were then bundled with Cal Poly salsa and seasoning in custom packaging designed by the students The Industrial Technology and Packaging Area is now selling these spatulas To purchase or for more information contact Ray Kisch at rkisch calpoly edu Students have also had the chance to showcase their packaging skills outside of the Cal Poly campus In January two groups of industrial technology packaging and art and design students participated in the 48 Hour RePack competition where students from around the world work to design and prototype a new to the world package from scratch in just one weekend Both teams worked together self directed and even shared feedback with each other despite the fact that they were direct competitors Each team engineered new packaging and created a video to market the design T eam Pacific Roast created a hexagonal modular dispenser for single use coffee pods Team Barbie created the School s Out Barbie Color and Play integrated traditional doll packaging with a coloring book for

    Poly has kept its streak alive for 23 years as the best public master s university in the West The Orfalea College of Business was also ranked among nation s top undergraduate business schools This is the first time the college has been ranked by U S News and World Report In the rankings released in August 2015 the university also tied for 10th in the magazine s overall list of the West s best universities which includes 116 public and private institutions in 15 states We are humbled by the recognition of this prestigious ranking said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D Armstrong It is always gratifying to see Cal Poly honored for our singular Learn by Doing approach to education Cal Poly picked up a number of other college level and university wide accolades The university s engineering program was again ranked seventh best master s and bachelor s program in the nation and the civil engineering and mechanical engineering programs were ranked third in the nation Cal Poly was also ranked 10th best veteran friendly university among Western universities a listing that shows military vets and active duty service members which top ranked schools offer benefits that can
