  • OCOB - Marketing and Packaging Collaborations Create New Opportunities for Students and Faculty
    of business students concentrating in consumer packaging solutions CPS The concentration was launched in 2012 and offers business majors entry into the rapidly expanding and dynamic field of consumer packaging The intersection between packaging and marketing yields fertile ground for Learn by Doing experiences such as the CPS culminating senior project experience designed by marketing Professor Lynn Metcalf with support from packaging faculty advisor and Professor Javier de la Fuente In the course students work in small groups and use design thinking techniques to drive packaging innovation Students have the opportunity to create new to the world package designs and conduct extensive research in the consumer and retail environments to uncover areas of opportunity for value creation In the final stages of the project the groups then develop prototypes to be validated by existing customers Matt Wright president CEO and co founder of packaging startup Specright supported cross disciplinary student learning in the CPS senior project class The combination of marketing and packaging produces a skillset that enhances speed to market which is critical to a company s ability to compete Students aren t the only ones gaining valuable experience in this emerging field This fall Metcalf de la Fuente and Professor Jeff Hess will build on previous research work to further establish consumer package decisions as a fundamental consideration in the marketing value chain Faculty collaboration on research is expected to promote a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between the two disciplines If this research is successful it will motivate marketing and packaging decision makers to rethink the impact of packaging on the consumption experience and by extension a product s value proposition said Hess The college is excited by the present collaborations between the two areas and is looking forward to continued work in the fields of

    leadership as our fearless advisor Richard Husky B S Business Administration 2006 Economics Minor A favorite memory Dr Tietje lead a team of 18 students on a year long senior project Our goal was to plan and execute a marketing campaign for the all new Honda Fit This was a competitive campaign and our performance was compared against many other universities Our group placed among the top three universities and was flown to Honda s USA headquarters to present our findings While giving our presentation I snuck a few quick looks at Dr Tietje He looked so proud I ll never forget his support and guidance throughout this project Thanks Dr T Kyle Cameron B S Business Administration 2008 Controller James Loudspeaker Professor Hess is very engaging personable and knowledgeable Erin Shafqat B S Business Administration 2013 Marketing Director Carlsbad Manufacturing Daily photos of Professor Borin s dog Ayano Kumazawa B S Business Administration 2012 Graphic Communications Minor Real Estate Administrative Assistant Costco Wholesale Japan I can t pick one so I will write two Dr Metcalf and Dr Neil They both have incredible knowledge and experience to share with us I enjoyed every assignments and projects I have done

  • OCOB - Alumni Spotlight: Molly Holcomb
    and error and thinking outside the box but it was a really great learning experience After a few years of proven success I was promoted to vice president and asked to attend monthly meetings with the board of directors a great feat at any age but especially while still in my 20s After seven years with Aerospace Federal Credit Union she joined Xceed Financial Credit Union where she works to achieve similar growth initiatives but on a much larger scale When I sat in my classes at Cal Poly I never thought that I would be marketing financial products ever Holcomb says It s very different from marketing typical consumer goods it forces you to be creative Personal finance is not as sexy as the latest fashion trends or electronic gadgets so you have to find new ways to capture your audience Holcomb says that Cal Poly s Learn by Doing philosophy was essential to her success at Cal Poly and beyond She remembers the excitement of her hands on senior project experience working with Professor Lynn Metcalf to fundraise and deliver wheelchairs to those in need in Belize I think that philosophy and the way Cal Poly encourages students to get hands on experience is key Holcomb says The knowledge I gained in my senior project classes in the American Marketing Association and in classes that had outreach components to businesses in the community provided a great foundation for transitioning into the workforce after graduation Even today Holcomb feels the Cal Poly spirit all around her She had the chance to work alongside Cal Poly alumnus Huong Halpin Statistics 01 and still promotes Learn by Doing as a standout quality in the workforce I regularly reference Learn by Doing As someone who now hires people on a regular basis

  • OCOB - Marketing Department Debuts New Sales Development Program
    senior project course in sales development Assisted by corporate partners ADP Citrix Online Fastenal Henry Schein Dental and TEKsystems the Sales Development Program SDP senior project gives students hands on experience in the selling process and explores the professions in sales and sales management Alumnus JD Torres who completed the program and graduated from Cal Poly in 2015 says that the experience was extremely helpful in preparing him for success in the professional world Even though I did not enter the field of sales after graduation many of the skills I learned and practiced in SDP have been very applicable to my line of work Through SDP I was able to practice valuable communication and quick thinking skills in professional sales situations said Torres The class is offered during fall and winter quarters at Cal Poly and each quarter features a sales competition between students The winner of each quarter s sales competition has the opportunity to compete all expenses paid at the National Collegiate Sales Competition NCSC in Kennesaw Georgia Students are coached by marketing lecturer Lisa Simon and consistently distinguish themselves at the NCSC while competing against powerhouse schools offering degree and certificate programs in sales Cal Poly and NCSC corporate partners appreciate the quality of Orfalea College of Business students and have hired many former and current students for internship and career positions The Sales Development Program prepared me immensely for the real world says Jon Grishpul who competed at the NCSC in March We learned valuable hard sales skills and also had the opportunity to nurture and hone these skills with relevant real world applications and in realistic sales environments I owe all of my success to the SDP and NCSC process For more information about the Sales Development Program please contact Lisa Simon at lsimon

  • OCOB - Letter from the Area Chair
    field has undergone tremendous change Fortunately our Marketing Area continues to modify its curriculum to prepare our students for the future needs of business We recently introduced a required course on data analytics taught by Professor Brennan Davis This course helps students further develop and broaden their skills in information collection analysis and application dovetailing nicely with our Strategic Marketing Measurement class taught by Professor Jeff Hess Through these courses students will gather and analyze big data sets and build skills in A B testing experiments Cal Poly also recently debuted an integrated marketing communications minor with three marketing courses three journalism classes and one graphic communication course Because student demand exceeded the supply so significantly we introduced a competitive application and review process A central core of the minor is our new social media course that prepares students for positions in social media content marketing digital marketing and brand storytelling Thanks to the initiative of the faculty we continue to refine our approach to the marketing introduction course BUS 346 Principles of Marketing We are really excited about the focus on experiential learning during students first contact with the Marketing Area One day per week the students have a more traditional session of lecture discussion and exercises During the second day we welcome some of our best junior and senior marketing students to serve as mentors and work with student teams on a variety of hands on projects that allow them to internalize the concepts from the day before Many of our marketing task force members are really excited about this new approach As always we value any connection we make with you We are always looking for guest speakers internship and career opportunities job shadowing possibilities and on site visits You know how great marketing at Cal Poly

    in better understanding how firms in developing countries impact environment and development outcomes as well as evaluating environmental policy effectiveness She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2015 with a PhD in Economics Before graduate school Doremus worked for the US Agency for International Development in Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo She returned to the Republic of Congo on a Fulbright fellowship collecting data in the north for her paper on the unintended impacts of Forest Certification on households nutrition outcomes Stefanie Fischer Stefanie Fischer joined the Economics area faculty in 2015 As an applied microeconomist specializing in the economics of education her research uses quasi experimental designs to provide insight into important policy relevant topics related to education as well as other areas of applied microeconomics such as crime and health She is particularly interested in understanding the outcomes of historically marginalized groups Fischer earned a master s and doctorate in economics from UC Santa Barbara in 2015 She also earned an M A in applied economics from Montana State University and a B S in mathematics from Linfield College in Oregon As a first year assistant professor she is teaching the upper division course Introduction to Econometrics and the master s level Labor Economics course Matthew Cole Matthew Cole is an international trade economist who specializes in strategic trade policy the political economy of trade and trade flows Matthew joins the economics faculty after spending three years as an assistant professor at Florida International University Prior to that he was an assistant professor at University College Dublin in Ireland He grew up in Iowa and earned his B A from the University of Northern Iowa in 2001 received his M A from the University of Iowa in 2003 and his Ph D from the University of

    favorite The most famous quote in the two years in the MBA program that I heard more often than not That s irrelevant immaterial and inconsequential Loved it Lauren Stapleton nee Parente B S Business Administration 2004 Economics Minor Business Strategy Enjoy Professor Michael Marlow was my favorite professor at Cal Poly I took his Monetary Economics class We had relevant videos great discussions and debates and he had amazing stories I could read and digest The Wall Street Journal cover to cover Kerry Wilson MBA 1991 Administrative Manager HASLO My favorite professor was Walter Rice I ll never forget the Economics of Robinson Crusoe lecture I sat in class thinking I get this He was an excellent teacher His final was a lottery three of 10 complex problems that were given beforehand You better believe that by the time the final came around each of us could solve those 10 problems in our sleep which was exactly what he wanted Matt Cohen B S Economics 2014 MBA Student UC San Diego The only professor I had twice during my time at Cal Poly was Solina Lindahl in the Economics area I loved her classes and even though we philosophically disagreed at times she challenged my way of thinking She helped me understand the reasoning behind demand side economics which is now so prevalent in the political economic world She also wrote one of my recommendation letters for business school and that meant a great deal to me I ll get my MBA this June Lynne Romano B S Economics 1980 Retired Attorney While all of my professors from Cal Poly bring fond memories the professor who stands out above all is Takis Papakyriazis Professor Papakyriazis taught in the Economics area and acted as my senior project advisor Academically he
