    tax return Go to https www irs gov Filing to find out whether or not you need to file Even if you don t meet the filing requirements there are various situations and circumstances in which you may want to file a tax return for your personal benefit Tax Withheld or Paid Did your employer withhold taxes from your pay Did you pay estimated taxes throughout the year Did you overpay your taxes last year In order to get your refund you must file a return Earned Income Tax Credit The EITC is a credit for workers who earn low or moderate incomes If you worked and earned less than 53 267 last year you may be eligible for a refundable credit of up to 6 242 In order to claim this credit you must file a return American Opportunity Credit The AOC is a partially refundable education credit that applies to the first four years of post secondary education This credit can refund you up to 1 000 per student but in order to claim this credit you guessed it you must file a return Premium Tax Credit If you bought health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace in the past year you may be eligible for this credit but again in order to do so you must file a return Additional Child Tax Credit If you have at least one child that qualifies for the Child Tax Credit and you don t get the full credit amount you may qualify for the ACTC In order to claim this credit you must file a return If you qualify under any of the above circumstances but are not required to file a return you may want to consider filing a return for this tax year in order to get a
