    Area Office Area Chair Doug Cerf Admin Coordinator Amanda Santos Location 03 403 Phone 805 756 1543 Fax 805 756 6347 Cal Poly Accounting Club Tutoring Peer Advisement Center Location 03 300 Phone None Hours of Operation Mon Wed 3 10 4pm Tue Thu 1 10 2pm 4 10 5pm Faculty Office Hours Winter 2016 view pdf 2016 Newsletter View Past Newsletters Accounting Law The Orfalea College of Business is considered a preferred school by recruiters at top accounting firms Our program prepares students for careers in professional service firms industry and government About Accounting Law The Accounting Law Area is recognized as a significant source of accounting graduates in California at both the undergraduate and the graduate level The area offers an undergraduate concentration in Accounting as well as a Master of Science in Accounting students have the option of specializing in Taxation or Financial Accounting The Master of Science with an emphasis in Financial Accounting will allow graduates to meet the licensure requirements that become effective January 2014 Concentration Information Professional guidance on current practices is provided by the Accounting Area Advisory Board which meets twice each year Other outside assistance is provided by donors who support student scholarships and faculty fellowships Services are furnished by the Accounting Area to low income taxpayers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance VITA program which operates in San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria The Low Income Taxpayer Clinic LITC provides representation of low income taxpayers for tax disputes The clinic also operates an educational outreach program for taxpayers for whom English is their second language Each year the Cal Poly Accounting Club puts on three professional recruiting events Fall Symposium held annually in early October for students recruiting for full time jobs Careers in Accounting Day held annually in early December

    with an understanding of the financial principles that are essential to success in the business world About Finance Students who choose the Financial Management concentration complete a rigorous curriculum and hands on projects that give them exposure to real world business challenges Finance students are able to pursue the Chartered Financial Analyst CFA designation or manage an endowment portfolio Student Managed Portfolio Project as their Senior Project The Finance Area also provides coursework in support of other majors and concentrations both within and outside the Orfalea College of Business Finance classes are taught in the Financial Analysis Resource Center a special purpose classroom with data terminals and real time display of stock prices The computers are equipped with financial data and software which permits students to work on real world problems individually and in teams Finance students have outstanding opportunities to intern with major corporations investment banks and money management firms Graduates go on to careers in investment banking corporate finance fund management real estate finance and other facets of the financial services industry Concentration Information Economics Finance Seminar Series Current Economics Finance Seminar Series Topics and Presenters Past Economics Finance Seminar Series Topics and Presenters More information View the

    how we see entrepreneurship at Cal Poly But we go beyond that to include a broader mindset and viewpoint We see entrepreneurs of all ages as individuals who keep their eyes open for opportunities to innovate to do something better to create value The entrepreneurial business person understands how to manage and grow a company through stages And above all there are entrepreneurs in all industries and walks of life Concentration Information Can you learn entrepreneurship We take the viewpoint that entrepreneurial business growth requires the whole breadth of business activity strategy marketing sales people management technology finance accounting etc Entrepreneurs must have a deep understanding of business management practices and also learn to surround themselves with people of experience Then you need to add a willingness to experiment to learn quickly and to manage risk Above all entrepreneurs need to know the questions to ask to understand their business operations and strategy What courses will I take Required courses 20 units BUS 310 Introduction to Entrepreneurship BUS 436 Entrepreneurial Finance BUS 488 Planning and Managing New Ventures BUS 418 Listening to the Customer IT 428 Commercialization of New Technologies Electives 8 units Students choose from a list of courses in areas like marketing finance management accounting industrial technology etc What about Senior Projects Many students choose to participate in the interdisciplinary entrepreneurship senior project section which provides real world hands on learning on what it s like to start a company and develop a first product This practical class lab is designed as experiential learning with the pressures and demands of a real world startup Students from the College of Engineering and Orfalea College of Business work as a team to develop a validated business model through customer and prototype development and then are tasked with developing high fidelity
