    doing real research work Students receive a stipend room and board on campus and a small research budget ScienceWorks ScienceWorks is a unique offering at Carthage The program focuses on the business of science by integrating important skills such as written and oral communication graphics and artwork business accounting management and marketing Students get hands on experience and coursework that prepares them for the job market and career advancement Pre Engineering Dual Degree Program For students who want to become engineers Carthage offers a pre engineering 3 2 dual degree program Students spend three years at Carthage and two years at a partnering engineering school Upon completion of the program students earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carthage and a Bachelor of Science in engineering degree from the engineering school Partnering engineering schools are the University of Wisconsin Madison College of Engineering and the University of Minnesota Pre Health Carthage offers many ways for students to prepare for medical school or graduate programs for the health professions The College serves students who are interested in dentistry medicine nursing occupational therapy optometry pharmacy physical therapy veterinary and public health Pre health students are assigned a faculty advisor who will assist them in determining which courses they should take and which career best suits their interests and ultimate goals Learn more about pre health at Carthage J Term J Term is a month long period of study in January in which students take a single course on campus or participate in a study tour in another state or country The Chemistry Department offers courses every J Term Many chemistry students take a required chemistry course during J Term such as Inorganic Chemistry because they can focus solely on that course The Department also offers CHEM 490 Research in Chemistry in which

    all ages This outreach is an important part of the Chemistry Department says department chair Christine Blaine One of our strengths in the United States is our scientists Prof Blaine said It s a hard road but we need to reach out to children and convince them science is a fascinating fulfilling career In March 2010 the Carthage Chemistry Department hosted an AP chemistry class from St Joseph Catholic Academy The high school students conducted a lab on solubility using the College s chemicals and equipment They are getting a more complete lab on this topic than I could have offered using the high school s equipment said Louise Meyer chemistry teacher at St Joseph They re making direct observations I could tell them this information or show them pictures but this way they re doing it and really learning it In April 2010 the Chemistry Department hosted about 50 junior high school students from Kenosha s Washington Junior High School The students watched demonstrations by Carthage students and faculty and learned about careers in chemistry Also in April 2010 the Chemistry Club hosted a chemistry themed Family Fun Night in Hedberg Library In July 2010 Professor Blaine worked with

    Chemistry Club Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society Carthage has been a member of the American Chemical Society since 1978 Student members meet biweekly attend social events sponsor activities to celebrate National Chemistry Week and host demonstrations and outreach activities students at local schools The chapter has been recognized by the ACS with Honorable Mention Chapter Awards 1997 99 2009 2010 and Commendable Chapter Awards 2000 01 Theta Chi Delta The Theta Chi Delta Honorary Chemistry Fraternity was established at Carthage in March 1926 This group works to provide services for those students who are studying in the field of chemistry Members must have a 3 0 grade point average over three semesters of chemistry Pre Health Club Pre Health Club is for students who want to pursue a career in the health field This includes students who are pre medicine pre veterinary pre pharmacy pre occupational therapy and pre dental Members serve others in the community gather for MCAT study sessions job shadow physicians and do other activities that will help set students apart when it comes to applying for higher education Keep Exploring Areas of Study Recognized for Excellence Photo Gallery Meet Our Faculty Academic Calendar Take
