  • PTSD Research — Psychology — Carthage College
000 research grant to Carthage that is used to teach students how to do basic research on the neuroscience of stress Quality Students Prof Miller met with Prof Servatius in 2007 at the Society for Neuroscience convention in San Diego The two decided that their work was the perfect opportunity to involve Carthage students He has a staff of 40 at the hospital in New Jersey but he has too many projects for those people Prof Miller explained Rick said I know the quality of your students and I have a series of projects that are perfect for undergraduates like yours We ve had a pretty steady stream of students going into graduate work in neuroscience or biomedical science This project and the follow ups we have planned are ideal for undergraduates Prof Miller continued The students learn critical neuroscience skills and they collect data that is published in respected neuroscience journals I do very little of the hands on research This is all about teaching students so they can do hands on work One of those follow up collaborations is a project between Servatius and students involved in Character Quest There are similarities in the program Servatius is researching and Character Quest and that provides a perfect opportunity to replicate his study and see whether it yields the same results Vast Opportunities Research opportunities are available to students who are interested Psychology major Angeliemarie Soto 13 originally wanted to be a department fellow but found out that all of the positions were filled So she approached Prof Miller hoping to help him with his research I like to do research and he always has work for students Angeliemarie said I just took the opportunity Angeliemarie assisted Prof Miller with a variety of tasks She administered a questionnaire to research participants that asked them to self assess their levels of anxiety and stress in various social situations She also took saliva samples from participants who got sent to a lab to measure hormone levels Lastly she administered a mirror tracing test The test has participants trace a star through a mirror and measures how they react because the movements they see in the mirror are the opposite of their actual movements Participants must relearn how to draw the star and that can create a certain amount of stress and anxiety due to a previously easy task becoming complicated The test engages the cerebellum and hippocampus areas of the brain that are often related to PTSD Prof Miller is a friendly professor who is more than happy to help when you have questions He encourages and fosters learning Thanks to him not only do I have the opportunity to conduct research but I truly enjoy it and that s something that I never thought would be possible Angeliemarie Soto 13 Prof Miller is a friendly professor who is more than happy to help when you have questions He encourages and fosters learning Angeliemarie said Thanks to him not only do I
