  • Biography of Dr. Gregory S. Woodward — The Inauguration of President Woodward — Carthage College
    the first online certificate programs in gerontology sustainability and business communications and created an entire winter session of online courses He established the college s first doctoral program in physical therapy and first master s degrees in education as well as an expansion of the master s degree programs in business administration education exercise science and sport management In 2010 Dr Woodward served as interim Provost Vice President for Academic Affairs leading Ithaca College in the formation of a new 10 year strategic plan IC 20 20 that focuses on academic enhancement and elevation faculty workload student advising and holistic education A major component of the strategic plan was the creation of a college wide core curriculum that the college had been hoping to create since 1943 More than 300 faculty staff and students contributed to the realization of this plan Also as provost Dr Woodward led the creation of Ithaca College programs in New York City and Beijing led a program of minority pre doctoral fellows for the School of Humanities and Sciences and hosted the 2011 National Conference on Undergraduate Research with more than 3 000 students from around the country presenting their research and creative work Dr Woodward began teaching full time at Ithaca College in 1978 becoming an assistant professor in music composition in 1984 and a full professor in 2000 From 1981 to 1983 he was director of music admissions and assistant to the dean From 1985 to 2003 he was chair or co chair of graduate studies in music and director of summer programs in music He taught every class in music theory composition and history at the graduate and undergraduate level and developed new courses examining music and the media American musical theatre history the aesthetics of music and popular music from an

  • Stratford Shakespeare Festival — English at Carthage — Carthage College
    re A Good Man Charlie Brown The festival is recognized internationally and actors from around the world dedicate their talents to this tradition each year The festival shows take place at the Festival Theater and the Avon Theater Festival Theater performances are done on a thrust stage which juts out into the audience and much like the design of Shakespeare s Globe Theater utilizes props to assist with scenery instead of large changes in sets The festival is put on by a repertory theatre company a group of performers who put on multiple plays in a season When the festival started only two shows were done each year Now the festival lasts for six months of the year and presents more than 15 shows Each year festival performances include Shakespearean plays classic theater of both the American and the European repertoire and musicals With the wide array of students from different areas of study the shows brought about a different experience for each attendee It was really fun to look at the piece after having had a semester of Music Theatre History said music theater major Kati Schwaber 15 Unforgettable experience Even students without a theatre background can gain a great deal from the trip English and Great Ideas major Jason Lund 13 said Of the two non musicals The Matchmaker was definitely the best The laughter was immediately gratifying but it still felt like it left you some things to think about afterward 42nd Street was just unrivaled as far as musicals go The music just moved something inside of me and I got goosebumps twice It actually changed my mind about what musicals are capable of doing The Stratford trip allowed participants to see a broad range of performances while enjoying the quaint qualities of the town itself

  • J-Term in Honduras 2012 — J-Term — Carthage College
    reef sharks during a special dive Early morning and night dives allowed them to see the changing of the shift in aquatic life They gravitated toward an artificial reef that formed on a sunken freighter That area was alive at night Prof Miller said The class counted as a Carthage Symposium a unique collaboration of professors from two different disciplines The faculty members also hoped the study tour would yield a new crop of conservationists We do it stealthily said Prof Hegrenes by allowing the students to witness for themselves the importance of the coral reef rather than simply lecturing about it Before flying back to Wisconsin the group spent three days on the mainland of Honduras There classmates enjoyed whitewater rafting visited a wildlife park and botanical garden and generally allowed their bodies to recuperate after the extensive diving Longtime J Term tandem It was the fifth straight year Profs Miller and Hegrenes traveled together Joey had traveled to Nicaragua with them on a medical mission during his sophomore year His part time job helped cover the costs of the Honduras tour a reward he indulged in after completing a difficult senior thesis They really have a great teaching dynamic and complement each other s teaching styles well he said The students came home with more than great memories and colorful photos They all earned international certification for open water SCUBA diving adding momentum toward the formation of a campus dive club Professional instructors accompanied them and Prof Miller said the resort where the group stayed on Roatan is a very forgiving place for novice divers Carthage instructors plan to partner with Diver Dan s Scuba and Aquatic Center in Kenosha to provide training in advance of next year s trip That will help them be able to enjoy the experience so much more Prof Miller said because they won t be complete novices when they get down there Those who are interested in the 2013 Honduras study tour are invited to an informational meeting at 4 p m Wednesday March 7 in Straz Center 228 It has a strong endorsement from Hailey Ongman 14 a biology and environmental science major from Flossmoor Ill who transferred to Carthage this school year I plan to continue SCUBA diving on a professional level and this trip was a great step toward that in both experience and networking opportunities she said After spending 10 days together on the unique expedition the traveling companions developed a strong and lasting bond Professors took steps to prevent cliques from forming I highly recommend this trip to anybody who wants to try something new while conquering insecurities said Hailey referring to SCUBA as a very exciting yet humbling sport She sees it as a great way to grow to know an incredible mix of people both in the Carthage network diving field and beyond VIDEO Video 2012 Honduras J Term Shark Dive The 2012 J Term study tour Biodiversity Brains and Behavior included this shark dive

  • Course Spotlight: Power Hungry — Carthage News — Carthage College
    Ron Cronovich he s challenging students in the J Term course Power Hungry Economic Political and Ecological Dimensions of Energy to understand both aspects of that vital cog in society The course examines the historical influence of energy sources on everything from economics to wars and the consequences associated with exploiting that energy Ron Cronovich Jerald Mast Prof Cronovich chair of the Economics Department and Prof Mast who teaches in the Political Science Department are teaching the course for the first time It counts as a Carthage Symposium a unique program that explores a topic through the lens of two different disciplines For their main project students were divided into groups to research the strengths weaknesses and future outlooks of different sources of energy Besides the obvious fossil fuels categories included renewables and even the power grid itself The professors also arranged a tour of Glacier Hills Wind Park northeast of Madison By spanning the centuries from the discovery and harnessing of fire to modern times the professors hope to supply some valuable perspective to their students Most of them have grown up only knowing a time of great energy abundance said Prof Cronovich adding that has been the exception rather than the rule over the course of human history Prof Mast agreed it s important to scrutinize the issues involved in energy production and consumption People take it for granted he said You plug in your computer and it turns on You expect it to be cold outside in January but warm inside The course follows a 2011 J Term study tour the two professors led to the Gulf region to learn firsthand about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and its effects These topics mesh with one of Prof Mast s research interests environmental politics Pointing to J Term
