  • Kenosha News Article: Carthage Contingent Wowed by Shuttle Launch — Carthage Students witness final shuttle launch — Features — Carthage College
the launches are Schultz along with Amber Bakkum from Winthrop Harbor Ill Steven Mathe from Wauconda Ill and Carthage physics professor Kevin Crosby were all invited by NASA to attend Friday s launch on behalf of their work with NASA engineers during a research program in Houston last April The students advised by Crosby are all a part of Carthage s Microgravity Team a group that studies the effects of reduced gravity NASA spokeswoman Lisa Malone said the reason for the short delay in lift off was due to an error in the GOX gaseous oxygen vent arm which is supposed to detach from one of the shuttle s external tanks before lift off Malone said NASA didn t receive an indication that the vent arm detached so they delayed the launch a few minutes to confirm the arm did indeed detach from the tank Besides the slight delay Malone and the students agreed the rest of the launch ran smoothly Some were concerned the launch would have been delayed for more than a few minutes as forecasters predicted a 70 percent chance of unfavorable weather Friday morning due to storms in the Cape Canaveral area However the skies cleared making it a perfectly fine day for launch Malone said The atmosphere at Kennedy Space Center was an emotional one as current and former NASA employees said good bye to a program some of them had been a part of for the last few decades With the massive crowds and a large countdown clock the students described the time leading up to lift off as overwhelming but that once the shuttle launched the crowd stopped to watch in awe Everyone just went silent Bakkum said It was pretty amazing Malone said some NASA employees around her were jumping and cheering
