done a wonderful job of just this Not only do I feel intellectually stimulated in my major related courses but the support system that I have through my professors is outstanding No matter the course they are always willing to sit with me and answer any questions I have or just chat about my future goals My favorite example of this is from my Cellular Molecular Biology course I went into my professor s office hours looking for help on a lab report regarding a confusing topic As we chatted she kept asking me questions I did not know the answers to After some time I was tired of not knowing and asked her why she was asking me such difficult questions Her response was Ann I am asking you these questions because I know you want to get more out of your education My professor was going above and beyond her teaching duties because she knows me she knows my learning style and she knows that I always want to learn more This is just one instance that showcases the professor student connection that Carthage has to offer These connections are wonderful when requesting letters of recommendation for school and job applications To have a professor write a letter of recommendation is one thing but when a professor is able to talk about your character drive and personality that makes their letter that much stronger As I begin to apply for graduate schools I am so thankful for the connections I have created while here at Carthage and the experiences that have been available to me Like most biology majors I came into college planning to attend med school when I graduate However through various opportunities I have realized that I have a strong desire to do research and

GPA and having a social life There are so many benefits to being so involved and constantly staying busy I will have so many things on my resume that I can say have positively affected my life and have made me more qualified than students from other schools Not to mention I have so many different groups of friends from being involved in so many different things One opportunity that stands out as being an experience of a lifetime is the medical mission J Term trip to Nicaragua Last January a group of students and two professors went to the island of Ometepe Nicaragua where we worked in medical clinics and experienced several different cultural excursions The hands on experience from the clinics is something most pre med students do not get to do until they are in medical school Seeing firsthand how people in a third world country live their lives really puts things in perspective and makes one realize how much we take for granted The interaction we had with the people of Nicaragua and the new friends we made on the trip will always be remembered and is something I truly cherish Another great opportunity I have participated in at Carthage is the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience SURE program Over the course of a summer I along with one other student and a biology professor conducted a research experiment on local bat activity in Kenosha County as part of the Wisconsin DNR s Citizen Monitoring Program Gaining this valuable research experience has helped me narrow down which direction I want to go with my career in biology It has also provided me with many contacts with professionals in the field and has allowed me to interact with other undergraduates from other schools who have conducted similar research Carthage s SURE program is extremely beneficial for students who plan to attend graduate school or medical school as research experience stands out on applications and shows that those students can apply what they learn in the classroom to real life scientific research experiments Not many other small liberal arts colleges have as many research opportunities as Carthage does which says a lot about the quality of the curriculum here Attending Carthage has turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life It is amazing to see and experience how much professors and faculty care about their students The benefit of having small class sizes is really getting to know your professors and being able to communicate with them one on one When professors are not in class teaching they are usually in their offices with their doors open so that students can ask questions if they need help with class work or even if they want to just say hi and visit Not only are the professors that friendly and helpful but all the students at Carthage are friendly and social people The joy of walking to class along Campus Drive and seeing familiar faces and

second semester and was able to work alongside a faculty mentor Such a position was unfathomable among my friends who were doing general education requirements at their schools and hadn t even gotten the chance to take a science course yet I have continued doing research throughout the duration of my college years and it has helped me realize that I want to be able to do research as a career I love it The summer of my junior year I applied to Carthage s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience SURE The SURE program is unique in that it s exclusively for Carthage students so you don t feel the anxiety of having to compete with other schools for a chance to do research and it is not reserved for just those who are majoring in the natural sciences I spent the summer on campus working with Dr Janice Pellino assistant professor of chemistry on my own independent research project Throughout the week along with my lab work I was able to interact with the other student researchers and learned about the many different research projects that they were doing which ranged from physics to economics I continued my research project for credit the following semester and traveled to St Louis to present my findings at the Midstates Consortium for the Biological Sciences Not only has the SURE program has given me the background that I needed to apply for graduate programs it s also given me the preparation I needed to be considered for research programs outside Carthage The summer before my senior year I was accepted to four different research programs and made the decision to spend my summer at UCLA with the Amgen Scholars program I got to do research in structural biology under Dr Jeff Abramson Furthermore

you witness someone who displays that much passion about a subject it is hard not to become interested and passionate about what you re studying At Carthage professors also want to get to know their students on a personal level which has benefited me tremendously in the classroom Professors will know you on a first name basis and they genuinely care about how life outside the classroom is going for each of their students This relationship does not end in the classroom as professors are involved in many activities that happen on campus Professors even talk about attending weddings of students they taught 10 years prior When you feel a personal connection with your professors it gives you a little extra motivation to not disappoint them in the classroom Carthage also provides an education that is going to prepare you for any obstacle the workforce or life throws in your direction Carthage offers over 50 majors and special programs that give students many options when pursuing their degree Students have the opportunity to take classes outside of their major that will give them different perspectives on issues happening in the world From religion classes to fine arts courses students will have the chance to test their abilities and improve their skills in areas that they aren t as strong in I have taken classes that range from chemistry to pottery and I feel like I am going to leave Carthage as a well rounded person I will also be more tolerant of people who have different beliefs than me because I was able to listen to students and faculty in many different fields of study that bring contrasting beliefs and perspectives to the table Lastly Carthage College offers numerous connections not only while you are enrolled but also once you

place I wanted to go but the place I HAD to go From the first time I stepped on campus I could sense the small community atmosphere and tight knit bond that the students shared The professors were drinking coffee with their students at Starbucks people waited to hold the door open for perfect strangers and students waved to passersby walking down Campus Drive It was a place where I suddenly felt at home and I wanted to live for four years here Carthage has absolutely met and exceeded my expectations of what I would be getting from a college education Every single class I have taken even the classes that didn t seem like they d be relevant to my life has taught me incredible things I may not have taken advantage of these opportunities had I not taken part in a liberal arts education Students J Term experiences both the on campus classes and the short term study abroad trips have been experiences that are unheard of on most campuses but here they are a normality Not only have I gotten so much out of those experiences but being on a campus where so many students have participated and brought back a new world view has enriched my life and the Carthage campus so much I honestly don t think it would be the same without those opportunities I fall more in love with Carthage the more time I spend here so much so that I already as a junior am dreading the day when I have to graduate and leave this place that I call my home However even though it will be a big transition I know that the education and the experience that I have gained at Carthage will prepare me for my life beyond
